I do this in the AM at least – is just ruthless common sense to avoid an unnoticed major/minor pastyface morning meeting embarrassment

oh knackers, I’ve been ignoring the letters for the emissions ‘fix’ from VW for my 09 Golf but now have a different one for a potential issue with the ABS control unit thermal overload which requires a dealer visit to be checked.

Seeing as these Alan Bstards are probs gonna install the emissions fix even if I tell them not to, probably best to steer clear altogether.

Hmm death by going into limp mode on the motorway or lack of ABS on the B-road. Gotta go somehow eh chaps :/

Serious question on this, I’m a semi big boy at 14 stone thinking to drop down from 203/180 to 180/180 on a new set of zees (coming from old old xt)

Bike gets all round use and needs strong braking as I like going fast but would you not get better performance from a 180 disk in more riding scenarios as it’s running hotter more of the time?

I always felt my aztek 203 only got cooking hot after dropping off a mountain etc rather than more ‘average’ riding conditions.

The zee/saint four pots seem to be right up there for modulation so has anyone upgraded performance by downgrading rotor size (in the welterclyde weight category) ?

I’m a postdoc working in the college of life sci at dundee uni

it’s a very well resourced/regarded institute but it’s clear that life science in academia is pretty much a ponzi scheme for the gilded few and students/postdocs are cheap meat to be fed into the machine. There’s alot of flexibility but you’re basically free to work as not hard as you like and see where it get’s you – experiments usually turn out to be ten times harder than you think and producing useful/valuable data will more often bore you to the point of insanity.

If you can see a route out the other side then by all means crack on but be warned it will be a slog and you need a sort of perverse bloody minded mentality to see it through. It’s almost like a game to see how much of your life it can take off you and still not finish you off.

All of the above is much more manageable if you are in a good group/institute. Start high you’ve a better chance to do ok, start in a cesspit and you’ll get dragged down by all the bullshit.

honestly the whole academic merrygoround is a crapshoot and so far removed from normal ‘professional’ job structures that it might as well be on another planet.

sorry to be on the bummer tip – I like science and hearing good science talks but doing the work is often tedium defined.

More generally can someone educate me about RCT3 dual position?

Can I run it in short mode at 130 mm and still ride it flat out or does droppping the travel make the spring rate more linear?

I’d like the beef of the pike chassis on my bandit but not so much travel – except for special occasions!

    bunch of w*nk$rs

Needed my rear VanR bushings changed in a hurry a few years back when I was a lad and hadn’t figured out how to do it properly myself.

Shock had never been off the bike from brand new.

Guy in shop says ‘no problem leave it with me we can get those parts’ – left the whole bike in the shop and got it back a few days later and turns out he’d used a hammer and chisel to batter out the eylet bending the end of the shock and obviously ruining it. New bushings lasted three rides and after Stif diagnosed what had been done took it back and guy flat denied he’d done anything wrong and it was like that when I brought it in. Also laughed, asked me what I expected from coming back to the shop and invited me to take him to court.

loved, loved, loved MTB since Johnny T was in MTBPro

    missed it living in london
missed it during post grad manchester
    missed it during phd glasgow
miss it working in dundee with daily commute to glasgow

rode my mk1 heckler 50 times in 15 years
