I fitted Shimano CX75 brakes, mainly because I hated the silver of the BB5s and they were cheaper than BB7s.

I also changed the stem for a shorter FSA bargin and fitted Continental Cyclocross Speed tyres, sacrificing a bit of the offroad grip. Fitted a Selle Italia SL XC saddle and less lay back’d Ritchey post but didn’t really need to.

Would like a Crest/A2Z wheelset but I really can’t justify it unless I buy a 29er as well.

Two and half times the price of Shimano CX75s, but heavier.

The locals build the trails and it’s been drier in the last month than most of last year, of course they are being used.

I like parts that I can swap between CX/MTB bikes, so to my shame I have a 50/34 with a 11-34 XT cassette on the back.

I love the look of Maxxis AdVantage’s in 2.1″, looks to be a great tyre to me, except that they only seem to be available in 70a (too hard) compound unless you go for the 62a Exception series tyres with the paper thin sidewalls…

The folding (not eXCeption) Avantages are 60a, the wired is 70a.

I don’t think going for 2×10 will make your bike lighter because your budget means that you are probably looking at the heaviest cassettes.

Ignoring that possible issue, Merlin sell the Deore Disc groupset for £250. You could sell the brakes and chainset on, then buy the chain rings to suit a 2×10 setup.

I think this dry spell is my fault, I bought a turbo trainer last week as I was feed up with rain and snow.

I’d shorten the cables, but that’s all.

I’m a bit surprised the question is being asked, nothing there stands out as heavy on a bike of that nature, if you start adding it up, the most cost effective solution could be a different frame.

I’m a 26 inch wheel user and I have effectively stopped buying anything that is wheel size specific (frame/fork/wheels/tyres), I was going to buy a Soul but I’m happy to wait now. When the stockpile wears out or something major breaks, I will go for 650b, although I would prefer the size to be nearer to the middle than 26in. I’m expecting, optimistically perhaps, to put less money into the bike industry over the next few years though I will have to resist the bargains if the bottom does fall out of the 26inch market.

    It’s of little use to you, but I ride a 2009 5 spot with 2 x 9 (22/36) and I can’t recall this happening.

What sort of cable end caps are you using? I had to search around for something that would fit, felt like I was missing the ideal solution.

Boblo, I paid £37.50 each from Hargroves Cycles but they are out of stock now.

If SC are going fat, they’ve had a whole year since that video to bring it to market…

You can’t strip the threads on an IS mount frame/fork.

I don’t think you could build your own bike for less because you wouldn’t cut corners on cheaper cassettes/chains/front mechs etc. I also think you have to look at if you are comparing an OEM product with a higher specification retail item.

I’m probably wrong, but the feeling I get is that Canyon’s frames must be very cheap.

A 140mm Fox can not be adjusted. Fox fitted a full length spring and left no space for the spacers, unlike the earlier 125mm. I’ve heard that fitting shorter springs from a 125 or 130mm fork with the spacers that you need will be bring the travel down.

I consider Shimano the better option but I suspect that I am out touch and soon to be find out that the beet option is an obscure Middleburn product or an FSA chainset with a ‘never to be repeated’ BCD.

For your needs, SLX should offer good value.

It’s late so I could be wrong, but aren’t you missing:

    Front and rear Mechs
    Chain
    Pedals
    Spacers
    Rotor bolts?

Thanks guys, it’s for my son who is 13, approx 154cm.

I’ve found a kona stinky frame second hand for £200 in 14″ …….:-/

I guess going uphill isn’t an issue then?

The best thing about the press fit standard is that you can fit a threaded BB adapter.

I’ve read somewhere that the wear rate may be less of a maintenance issue and more to do with the cups not being truly parallel, either via installation or frame manufacturing. Not sure if that is more of an issue with this type of BB.

Riding around the car park will be possible, so the primary activity at Llandegla would seem to be unaffected by the trail closure.

If it’s Giant or Specialized, then your bike isn’t compatible with the PSI standard.

Strava/Geo-tagged photographs/leaving the bike rack on the car/riding to the shops on the £5k mtb/tinkering the garden/buying & selling from ebay gumtree etc. – I can’t believe it when people put the reason for selling as “just upgraded to carbon blah blah blah”

I said that I am engineer by trade and that if I offered it up on a laithe it would take approx 5mins…

That made me laugh. How many bike shops have a lathe out the back????

Probably the same number of engineers by trade that can’t spell lathe.

Just noticed the impeccable attention to detail of the levers on No.2, it gets my vote, even if the theme isn’t carried through to the pedals.

I have a Reverb that works but I won’t be surprised when it doesn’t.

I think the current dropper design is asking too much of an existing standard/clamping system. With all the gubbins attached, there is too little space left to build a system that can resist all of the forces whilst remaining well sealed.

How long until a new integrated standard appears?

Looks like the most expensive and ungodly way to achieve a stack attack.

Same as the above but not with a dropper. Maybe throw on some carbon fibre assembly gel for some extra friction.

I like Merlin a lot. They don’t send too many emails, but when they do, good quality kit in normal sizes is usually offered at very good prices; their sales seem believable.

I also actually like the lack of choice on their website, it’s not like they uploaded every component in the catalogue without thinking about what people actually want.

Was tempted, but Turner seem to have moved away from the RP23 model to the RL as I guess they don’t like Propedal. Once correctly tuned, that’s £180 spent on a pretty coating, which could’ve been put towards a coil shock.

Quite a few of the Fox forks seemed to be £100-£150 cheaper on Sunday, was that before the sale started?
