Why not just buy a narrow wide chain ring & make sure you get a clutch mech instead of the chain device you will need to get if running 1×10 on a standard ring?

I had orignaly wanted to make a bamboo/carbon bike frame but my teacher said it wasn’t original enough

blimey! I managed to get an A all those years ago making a cabinet! Did have a bike obsessed chap who built a chop shop recumbent in my class.

Great city, been a couple of times. The tourist buses are perfect for seeing a lot of the sights and you can hop on and off. Also recommend walking around the back streets to the left of Las Ramblas (if you are looking down it towards the port, loads of interesting restaurants, cafes and bars there.

On the pickpockets front, make sure you avoid the groups of girls who tend to be nearer the bottom end of Las Ramblas during the evening. If you’re a target they’ll be all over you in a harassing sort of way and if you don’t have your wits about you wallet, watch, phone etc will be gone. Don’t think the whole place is like this, just be aware as last time I was there, (albeit on a stag do so lets just say some were none too complicit) a few of my friends were robbed.

Did anyone on here end up with this?

Submitted by Mark Horacek a Cross Country Rider from London, UK

Strengths: Its a RM9. You do daft things on it that no one could pay you to do on another bike.

Weaknesses: Its very very heavy. When I switch to my lightweight Vertex I feel sudden superhuman strength

    Bottom Line:
Its a huge red double-decker bus when you shove it over the edge of a cliff that stops in seconds with the help of massive disc brakes. Check it out on Ebay now (item# 1813441371)

I had a friend who bought one of these frames off eBay (a red one too), so maybe, just maybe…..

It cracked in the end I think. Was one fugly looking bike that was.

I think he felt it was nervous on steep descents, but I find it incredibly capable on technical stuff.

Last thing I’d describe my spot as is nervous, but each to their own.

It’s not just the car park that gets rammed. Last Sunday the blue track was swamped by mid morning with big groups of slow or stopped “recreational” riders. Had to abandon the new trails and head for the Labyrinth (DH sort of)area.

It was good to see so many people getting into mountainbiking but I think the blue tracks near the Lookout will just frustrate any experienced rider. I’d get there early, get on the blue track and transition over to the red tracks and the Labyrinth area.

Agreed. Best times to ride are early or late in the day on weekends. Great for an after work ride in lighter months. Sections of the blue can be ridden at a good pace and it’s pretty frustrating being all over the back of a slower rider on some of the swoopy bits of the blue. Red tends to be a lot quieter and the riders generally quicker.

It’s now a trail centre. Blue and red loop combined is about 14 miles. Jump gully is still there as is the DH area. If the weather is good best to get there early as the car park gets rammed.

I can go pretty quick still and have more fun and have a more versatile bike.

    This.

My 150mm F 140mm R bike does everything I need it to do reasonably well. Its only got 25% less travel than most of my old DH bikes had, it weights around 30lb, pedals well, goes uphill quickly, is fun on the downs, nails single track, stops without fuss, the seat goes up and down at the push of a button and it does not fall apart after a bit of abuse.

I thought groms was a surfing term used for kids?!?

I think it’s one of those terms which has been passed on between ‘extreme’ sports.

Descent world was the other forum that got “rebranded”

Did that combine with SDH in a sort of North/South coming together?

often the scene is full of smug pyjama boys sneering because you missed the high line. It’s one big willy waving session that’s hardly inviting to new folks.

I don’t think this is a DH specific issue. Any of the more extreme sports (or sides of sports) have their fair share of idiots who sneer at the lack of Gnar/latest kit/ability to send huge gap/trick etc and give the rest of the community a bad name. Seen it is skating, snowboarding, dirt jumping and so on. Sad thing is a lot of them are the all the gear no idea brigade. We used to call them Groms when we skated back in the day.

I always found SDH to be a lot like this place used to be. An impenetrable nest of spineless, pedantic, willy-waving, argumentative, tossers

Find me an internet forum that isn’t like that. I just try to find ones which keep this to a bear minimum of 95% bulls@&t content.

Had some time out of the sport due to young family so had not been of SDH for a few years, went back and found a distinct lack of activity so left it alone. Only consistent that remained was Archie posting pics of another ‘new’ warm hatch.

222 was my first DH bike, it is still missed, though not in the same way as my old M1.

I don’t follow it much anymore, but last time i went of SDH, it was dead.

I noticed that when I went to look at the classifieds there, by the look of some of the user names I think a lot of us have pitched up here, always was a good forum that one.

Just switched out to 1×10. 32t front, 11-36t rear. Ride mainly trail centres and not felt like I have really needed any higher or lower. On a 2013 SLX double, used 1.2mm spacers between tabs and ring to avoid filing the tabs and had no problems at all. On RF narrow/wide and Zee clutch.

I got the Merlin double set a few months ago and it has been great. Now gone 1×10 so parts of it have now moved on but been very happy with it. I love the brakes, lever feel is really nice and converted me to single forefinger braking, cranks are good too and finish is holding up well.

Cracked the faceplate on a secondhand stem that I’ve had for around 4 years, replaced on warranty no questions asked (I had only contacted them to check whether the replacements you can buy from the dealers are all the same size), arrived the day after they received the broken part. Great customer service.

    Disclaimer – I own a DW link 5 Spot.
It looks fine, and it’s a bike I’d like to own but DW link Turners aren’t brilliant looking. It’s actually just as well it’s a non-driveside photo, Turners look better that way as you can’t see the weird looking elevated stay on the drive side.
Based on what my 5 Spot is like I’m quite sure it’ll be great to ride, near indestructible and very well supported by Turner but other companies make better looking bikes.

    As above.

To OP – judging by his responses on MTBR forum DT specs a Lev as it negates any issues caused by hose routing when a Reverb is dropped (think he uses a Reverb on his bike though). Turner’s aren’t drilled for stealth routing.

    theblackmount – Member
But then it’s a Turner so it must be good – right?

I know all things are personal, but in over 20 years of mtb my DW 5Spot is (alongside my old Intense M1 DH bike) the best bike I have ridden. I’d love to try the new Burner.

I run 150mm revs and a 140mm frame (5Spot) as my only bike. Lockout with motion control is simple to flip on at the start of a climb but to be honest I never really use it as most climbs I do are fairly short trail centre jobs. A lot of it is all in getting the sus set up right in the first place.

Personally dropper posts is one part of the market where pretty much you get what you pay for. I’ve had a HiLo which did the job, but a Reverb is so much better in terms of performance, I think the full hydraulic system is a real advantage over cables. I’d be wary of a buying something cheaper now and wanting to upgrade in 6 months time. The £160 reverbs won’t be around forever, I’d bite the bullet and snap one up.

Update. Bit the bullet and went with a 32t RF narrow wide. Set it up tonight with 1.2mm spacers on my SLX double to counteract chain rub on the ring and all seems fine on a round the block spin. Spacers are so narrow that you can’t notice any real aesthetic difference and shifted up and down the cassette without issue. Used the chainring bolts that were already on. Conclusion, it can be done with a 32t on an SLX double with no modification to the spider.

I’ve been looking over the past few days. German sheds seem the best bet for clutch mechs at the moment. Just ordered myself a Zee for around £48 inc postage from bike-discount as going 1×10.

Pretty sure I had this and it was the expensive fix. Was a few years ago now but BMW part funded the repair as it was a common problem. Car was out of warranty but had been serviced on schedule through the dealers.

The best way to deal with them is the sealed poison boxes like these (hence safe for pets and kids) which contain an anti coagulant, when they run off and die the bodies are so small you don’t get the stink associated with rats or squirrels.

You might have some success with traps but it is so hit and miss, poison is much more effective. That aside sticky boards are the most effective way to trap, place them in areas of rodent traffic overnight (mice run along walls as they navigate by touch rather than sight). If you do catch them on the boards though disposal is not for the squeamish as they will be alive and it will be your job to send them to their mousy graves.

Good friend of mine runs a pest control business hence the knowledge.

Given the amount of wear if gets £70 is not so bad a for a watch that in my opinion looks good and is pretty bombproof, but that’s why I’m commenting on a G-Shock thread. Cheaper digitals just don’t do it for me.

_tom_ because I don’t want to screw my expensive watch up falling off my bike, working round the house, playing with kids etc etc.

I can only recommend what I have owned and had enough time on to form an opinion. I guess in the range you are looking at that would be a Cove Hustler and a 5Spot.

Cove was OK but I never found I fully bonded with it, I can;t say it was the best climber and definitely needed the propedal to make it better in this respect.

I can honestly say these the 5Spot is a joy. I have a 2009 with a 1.5 degree slackset on it (picked this up for £450 with hardly a scratch on it). It’s built with 150mm revs, reverb, AM wheels, SLX and decent finishing kit, come in at around 30lbs. I’ve not had to touch the pro-pedal on the shock (Turner recommend only using using it on the lightlest setting, if at all), it climbs really well, no real bob but great traction. On the downs and singletrack it tracks and corners great as it sits nicely into its travel. Took a couple of rides to get the shock set up as I wanted, but once done has been impeccable). Good build quality, good customer service (even for secondhand owners), and easily maintained pivots. Not sure about tapered head tube though, not on mine but maybe on later models. For me it’s a keeper for sure, at least until the 650b Turner Burner becomes affordable on the second hand market.

Worth cleaning the Zerts and checking they are not clogged up with a pin or small nail otherwise the grease sometimes does not go in properly.

Also worth passing by the mtbr.com turner forum as they are a good source of knowledge. You get responses from Dave Turner himself on there.

I’ll take 3rd place in the grease gun queue by the way.

I think the brace between seatpost and top tube may make it looke a bit like the Dialled, bu they’ve put a lot of effort into sorting the geometry to take advantage of the 650b wheels.

Put hanks for the replies. Just to be clear iits the chainring that needs spacing not the BB. It’s the size I need, I can get the spacers on eBay, it’s confirmation of what size I need that I am after.

    razorrazoo

Thanks but I reckon they’ll be too thick. Spacers are easy enough to come by, it just the size I am not sure of. I am thinking possibly 1.2 mm but not 100% sure.
