    Good to hear gray

I’ve already brought some new pedals in anticipation, some shimano t8000 trekking ones. And one side with a largish flat body the other should be ideal for my hopes flat body for quick rides and for long/’property ones

Well I’ve placed the order, fingers crossed it will be OK, as it meets all my wants and requirements at a reasonable price and availability.

I will keep you all updated on my experience. All ready had some comments on build date, estimated dispatch and delivery dates so no problems – yet!

That is terrifying and impressive in equal measure.

Forgive my ignorance why is it being built?

So pressed the button on a ‘creme egg’ force1 spec free ranger in medium. Which looks like it is hopefully the right size (I am odd, short legs for height) will update on progress, clock starts ticking now. Hopefully in 35 days it will be New Bike Day!

    Thanks cookeaa.

Not sure what to do. It seem if it goes wrong it goes badly wrong and sorting out will be hard.

Had a look at merlin cycles. They have some reasonable offerings in, but heavier and less well speced

    Thanks Tom,

Happy to order a free ranger just trying to figure out size now

This is what makes it hard.

I am v unfamiliar with drop bar sizing.

    I am 175cm with short legs (78cm)

I ride a small genesis croix de fer which I think is too small as it feels too cramped in the drops, but it’s the o lying drop bar I’ve ever had so maybe they should?!

@devonboy what size did you buy and how tall are you?

Ok so it sounds like a goer, good to hear. I get what open mould means now, I thought it might have been a construction technique.

So I guess forced is better than rival given the price difference and weight difference, is it worth it?

    What colour is best?!

If PX/OO arent great what else should I consider for the sub 2k bracket?

Dumb question what is open mould and what is wrong/not great about them?

This I’ll helpful stuff, I will check out the XLS not seen it. I wa thinking of the free ranger as more what (I think) I am looking for. Mild off road with bits of on road

Bookwork wall should be blockwork wall!

    ravingdave

Poopscoop, not sure if this has been covered but that bookwork wall sits on the boundary, ie 50% of that wall is on your land. This falls into section 1 of party wall etc act 1996. Did he serve notice upon you in accordance with the act? Did you provide your written permission? If not regardless of planning he would have to take wall down and rebuild entirely on his land

Oh, use the cruise control as often as possible as it would try to keep it on 2 cylinder mode for fuel economy, it gave better fuel figures on cc than my own foot on m’way

    I HD the 1.5tfsi in an a3. Amazing engine. 53-55pg on a regular motorway run @ 70mph.

Average 47-48 overall and about 40mpg round town, guess passant would be lower as bigger car.

Lovely revvy engine with enough power, can’t recommend enougg

I have done this route in the past. I did it in a day (and added a summit, highest point in SW isn’t far off route) for charity.

It’s mostly old railway lines for easy gradients. Lovely route very pretty and easy to navigate.

If you wanted to do it over a few days then lots of accommodation options on route! Make sure you finish on barbican in plymouth for dome great food and beet options

what is the ride quality like on the leon on 19s? I do about 28k a year and want something that i actually ‘want’ to drive; but am conscious of having an appalling ride/noise on motorways

thanks for all the positive contributions – really helpful.

the idea is to open up my riding without turning into a roadie (nothing against them i am just scared of cars!)

Devonboy whereabouts are you? if not far from Plym would love to have a look at your OO freeranger its one of the bikes on the shortlist, along with the OO Whippet etc.

i do want a gravel bike, but they seem v terrain specific. the thread by roverpig it think it was showed how amazing gravel bikes can be. i am not sure that paths like that exist where i live. i think they gravel bikes (like most bikes) are location specific.

i want to explore my area as quickly as possible. i am not sure whether a 29rigid/HT or a gravel will be better. based on my knowledge i am currently coming down to a 29HT/rigid but wanted the opinion of other locals hence including plymouth in title

this is kind of the crux. i have no interest in a road bike – I hate riding on road. i want a way of travelling off road in the south hams/dartmoor as quickly as possible. so will that be a by rigid or short travel 29ht or on a gravel bike?

    ravingdave

yea that is the sort of thing i am thinking of but just wondering how often and how much varied terrain there is down here

yea i take my bike to work/sites so need it inside, secure and out the way as i often ride on way home. if it is no more trouble than taking the front wheel off then should be ok. tomorrow is crunch time as i am seeing it with my bike
