Yeah. We’re meant to be doing a special birthday route and this is one that we havent done …. have to put thinking cap on or just do it anyways. the descent off howden is worth it alone I guess. I’ve done that descent a few times just not done the whole CG route to Langsett.

    Yeah Darc

I guess there was the norse mythology he was into aswell and his academic work in Old English etc.

After going to Iceland and looking at place names there and their similarity to UK place names , you do realise how Germanic the English language actually is.

i.e. Scafell in the Lakes, Scaffafell in Iceland.

Anyone been sad enough to go to the Eagle and Child in Oxford? Um …. I have!!

Think we’re going to do a big walk on the Wrekin soon as that was a huge influence on his writing for LOTR. Heck I’m sad.

By the way, Tom Bombadil does have fans, his book by JRR sells for quite alot of money, first edition though!

Still got a few peas left, just picked the last broad beans and mange tout.

French beans doing fab! Have planted batches successionally so I’m hoping they’ll last into the autumn.
Just dug up two rows of potatoes. 2 left.
Pulled up all red and white onions and shallots.
    Radishes been great this year.
Spinach has been amazing. summer went to see a bit while I was away but the winter spinach is producing great quantities.
Beetroot has done incredibly well. Have so much of it I’m looking at making beetroot cake..hmm.
squashes and pumkins are coming on nicely within a bed of green manure, red clover.
    Chard has been great.
As with the rest of you, I’m waiting for toms to ripen.
Planted red cabbage this year and they are looking awesome.

Still growing for autumn / winter – celeriac, swede, parsnips, leeks, late sowing of carrots, kale, late sowing of spinach, green manures.

    Courgettes done crap this year.
    Climbing french beans got annihilated.
Carrots have fallen victim to white fly.

Fruit wise I got apples and plums coming along, been eating the apples already. Don’t know if anyone else has then but I’ve got double cropping raspberries and the 2nd crop is just starting to ripen. Brambles are being eaten already.

All said its been really dry this year been having to water so much. Been given the veg quite alot of feed – nettles and comfrey.

Looking at planting alot of green manures this year to give the soil some energy back.

Classic books. Found Silmarillion a little tiresome but LOTR and The Hobbit are two of my fave books.

Though I must admit, after visiting Iceland several years ago (the island, not the shop) you notice how much he stole from the Icelandic sagas. Pilfering on a huge scale.

Hugely influential, especially in black metal and skinhead/ odinist/ heathen circles

oh and these dodgy geezers named a song after a chapter in LOTR

Ferkin Hell. I do find it tiresome hearing some poor poor bloke not being able to say what he wants cos those bloody PC’ers are fookin stopping him.

What is it they are actually trying to stop you from saying. I’ve heard so many whiney right wingers complaining about those lefty pcers lately yet they never actually define what they are being stopped from doing or saying. What actually is it?

Hell. I’m sure a larger percentage of the Republicans in the USA these days don’t say **** as much as much as they used to in the 1960’s or 70’s. Is that sooooooo bad?

Is it so abhorrent that you are being stopped from saying that word? Or do you think you have the right to say ****, pakki, yid, wop, fag, pikey, etc etc etc

Be really interesting to see you explain the restrictions the leftist statists are imposing on you. Cheers.

Here’s my DH bike I’m gonna work on. A Dirtworks Monster. Just need to get a new saddle for it and replace the old rock shox with some second hand marz 888’s when I can afford them.

Are you being aggressive enough with your bike whilst in the air. You gotta push that beast out with your arms and dictate your landing.

It’s been incredibly dry in Sheffield. Sheffo has so much water that runs off the moors year round and has incredibly heavy clay soil resulting in high water retention. But this year I’ve not know owt like it. I’ve had to water the allotment so much this year.

On a plus side nice dry trails !!! Though may be a little wet tonight with this recent downpour.

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ll have a go at making something more solid. Funnily enough I used laggy bands on my camera yesterday, worked ok for a while until I hit some bumpy bits.

Birdlip parking spot is something!! I stopped there after visiting relatives in Gloucester. Thought I’d have my sandwich and admire the view whilst on my way to Oxford. I had a guy in a parked car get quite irritated with me as he kept getting out of his vehicle going through a gate into the coppice nearby. He repeated this about three times and then drove off after he gave me a grumpy look. Didn’t realise it was one of those places til I mentioned it to a mate from Stonehouse who laughed his head off and told me what went on up there. Oh righto!!!

    As big as yer like!!

Off the top of my head I would rate

    Lockerbrook
Win Hill ridge and turning right at the cairn down to Aston
    The Beast
    Howden Moor to slippery stones
    Blacka Moor descents
    Shatton Edge descent to Bradwell
    Howden Edge descent

Does Derwent compare to these?? Hmm…. What about the reverse route… DerEdge to Cut Throat Bridge.

… Ta! … though… you’re calling me daft and you have to use the same name for two completely different msg boards… All you have to do is remember that one msg board is two wheels orientated and your ‘other’ msg board is for four wheels and use a name accordingly. Hence V8 for your Landrover msgboard and perhaps a bikey type name for this one? Simps really… I think I’m being insulted by someone dafter than me!! oops … almost forget them…

I do love this concept of summary street justice that plenty of people seem to be advocating. While I was travelling home last night on the ring road of our city a group of working class youth in sportswear were crossing the road as the lights were changing. An expensive car decided to speed up and aimed at the youth. This car was seriously close to running over some of these kids, they had to jump out of the way of this speeding car. Is this the attitude we should endorse? You’re in a group of over 5 people, dressed in sportswear and therefore you deserve my wrath cos you’re all scum! (Note – there has been no trouble in my city)

Well perhaps I’m getting a little bit bored of Captain Mannering et al thinking national service is a good thing.

CHB – and there’s not massive inequality here?
