    Evening,
You can mail me: william.brady@lancashire.gov.uk if you have any questions about the route as Im the Pennine Bridleway Ranger. My patch is from Rochdale round the MTLoop and up through Lancashire.

Basically there are still a few niggly bits that need work either legally and/or physically (gates, road crossings, surfacing etc). Until these bits are done the northern section of the route wont be ‘officially’ opened. The section in the Dales is nearly finished and Im up there this week to ride it

If there is a group of you, I can help with free guided rides (its part of my job). If you want to do the loop in a day for example, we can help with transport, getting you round in one piece with backup, spares and food. We can also recommend good pubs at the end!
    Cheers

Just checking my works mower and I need sae 30 and not 10-30 as I mentioned.SAE 10-30 will run thinner so you will use more and the engine will run hotter.
Google the make of engine,as alot of mowers use the same engine(honda or Briggs and Stratton for example)
    Hope that helps

The fuel tank will have either the emblem of a petrol pump and a drop (of oil) 2 Stroke
Just a petrol pump 4 stroke

    just a fuel tank….2 Stroke
Fuel tank, seperate oil fill and dip stick/sight glass…..4 Stroke

Long cable coming out the back……electric 😆

Had rear XT shimano C&C come loose on a wet long ride over the moors on a 6 month old bike, stripped them down cleaned a regreased but its now pitted. I have hope hubs on my other bikes and they are easier to replace the bearing and as someone else pointed out, once new bearings are in its like new. However I have had a small section of the hub crack off where the rotor bolts go in….its still rideable though 😕

Chainsaw is either two stroke oil or chain oil. Dont use either of these as a lubricant oil in an engine as one is designed to burn and the other has anti fling qualities (yes really!)If its a Stihl use good quality Stihl stuff.

Mower 10-40 maybe? Use cheap halfords oil, should be OK

I have a 2.1 one on the back and a high roller on the front and find its an excellent combo, long XC, sloppy winter night rides, dry trail centres. I've got some continentals on the bike now but find it a bit sketchy so might dig out the MAXXIS again

Its the cold that gets you because reservoirs are deep still water, so although they might feel nice and warm as you paddle in they are cold the deeper you go. Unlike the sea which warms up as it passes back over the warmed sand, or rivers which are are running and pass through shallow (warmer) areas, reservoirs stay reasonably constant year round (apart from the top inch or two which will go up or down through the seasons). As told to me from a water board ops bloke.

Oh and mentioned above, if they are drawing down water your **** because of the strong undercurrent. Similar principle if it freezes over, when they draw down there will be an air gap between ice and water.

A teenager drowned recently up our way so all the reservoirs now have massive signs for stupid people who cant read the big signs.

Stay out and swim in rivers or lakes, get the wild swimming book its a great read.

    Here endeth the lesson

Cheers everyone, one has loosened due to the favorite 'douse it in spray then go off in a huff and have a brew'. The other one is still being a stubborn Bstard though. I have a cordless impact, will try that

I had problems with my xt and slx brakes. I bled them the way I know from motorbikes and cars and couldn't get them to work, took it to LBS and got it back top notch…until I put the bike back in the shed…I tipped the bike onto its back wheel with the brake on and it the lever just went straight back. So

    Got bleeding kit
filled pipe and syringe with oil,
took caliper off so i could get nipple at the right angle,
levelled reservoir and took cap off then
pushed fluid from the caliper UP to the reservoir.
Sorted brakes are really sharp now, recommend the reverse bleed

I would have thought the local horse riders would be up in arms about that, long open grassy stretch to gallop up and down on replaced with hard crushed stone?
Is it a farm access track?

    rangerbill

interesting, no crossfall, the vegetation on the low side is higher than the track and no use of dgalumps (drainage lumps) to get the water off……it'll be in a worse state by the time you've had a few summer downpours!
Hey ho money well spent, just spent an afternoon visiting a site thats already showing signs of water erosion after only being down 3-4 months!

the average quotes from contractors i use are about 8 per metre for a sub soil path and about 30pm for a gravel track (50mm DOT type 1, no terram)….ish

    Hora,
its generally agreed with the problem of illegal Off roaders that we ask people to ring the crimestoppers number or the local police station, report the offence and get a log number. This way the Police can build up a pattern and then hold an operation to clamp down on the problem. 999 is the number you would call for accidents or emergencies (me legs dropped off, my house is on fire etc)
There will be more signs going up around Rooley moor road (and the whole of the South Pennines in general) which explains about section 59 giving police the power to seize vehicles. The signs are seen to be the first warning (whether they have been read or not) and the second warning by the Police is when the vehicle can be seized.

singlespeedstu, sorry, didnt know about this daytime MOT.

For info you can run a motorbike without any lights (though if it has a back light, it MUST have a front light) but it still has to be taxed, insured and have an daytime MOT.

    rangerbill

No they are not allowed there.
You can ring the crimestoppers number or local police and complain. BUT make sure you ask for a log number. Take a picture if you can as MX riders will usually ride in the same kit.
If you dont ring the police then there isnt a problem and the trails will be wrecked before they are open.
If you do speak to them (thats up to you), politely tell them they are not allowed here and they should try Cowm leisure which is just round the corner and is aimed at 4×4 and MX

    Crimestoppers – 0800 555 111

    Cowm leisure http://www.cowmleisure.com/

Even though they are riding illegally there bikes STILL need to have valid tax mot and insurance….which means a number plate, proper lights etc. You can only ride a 'field bike' on your own land.

    Hope that helps

I always cycle behind my kids so I can see where they are going…or else you spend a lot of time weaving about as you're looking backwards. It also helps that you can keep talking to them, help them when pulling out for parked cars, positioning on the road, speeding up for upcoming hills etc and finally you can position yourself in the road so when cars pass you they leave a big enough gap for the kids.
But thats only my personal opinion

Classic is the way to go, that doesnt mean you have to get something ancient, as mentioned Classic starts at 10 or 15 years. Ive got Fully Comp with european cover for me and my wife for 100 squid on a camper. Its limited to 5K miles per year but that speedo cable is really dodgy!

Did you say you lived in London, if so check that your car (especially if its an old Diesel)is OK within the Low Emission zone thing.
If its a banger your after check out your local breakers and see what kind of cars are about for spare parts, fords are plentiful for example, loads of spares then you dont have to buy new bits. My brother in laws Saab engine went pop and even for a snotter of an engine from the breakers was over a grand, however a mate got a Diesel engine fitted for his 205 Peugot for 250 quid all in.
    Hope that helps

Disco floor panels rot badly. If you cant open the rear door properly dont buy it. The engines last for ever though, my boss just sold hers with 250,000.

    The websites your best bet.
Which area are you riding and how up to date is your map?
Eventually all the PBW will by bridleway status or above, it just may be that some councils haven't upgraded/dedicated the sections just yet.

Theres loads of info in the Mens Health/fitness type magazines.
Plenty of water throughout the day (helps convert your stored fat into energy) eat 5 times a day, but healthy food and smaller portions (your body can digest it easier and quicker so doesnt store excess as fat).
Yes your body does go for muscles rather than fat, so if you do loads more CV but dont give yourself protein you'll lose muscle.
Never weigh yourself but look for definition in your body. There are products out there that arent just for weight lifters. Ive used maximuscle in the past and always found it good

I love em. I drive one for work every day and its ace. No where to put your right arm…wind down the window! Heaters are brilliant but the gap in the front vents let all the cold air in!
'They should have made a 100" one' they did its called a Range Rover Classic. They are cheaper than 90 (no off road scene tax), classic insurance, they drive beautiful if they have been looked after, the v8 auto is gorgeous (OK so its a bit thirsty 8O) and the rear seats fold and flip making the space in the back massive. I sold mine to get a camper but if I won the lottery (just to fill the tank up) I'd get a RR classic instead of a 90, its a pretty easy swap for a 200/300tdi engine transfer and gearbox from a Disco as well.
If you get a bike rack for the 90 (as mentioned its a wheel of job to get the bike in) get the one that hangs from the spare wheel. I didnt and its a faff when you forget to put kit in the back first, then you have to take the bike and the holder off again!

they are a bitch to bleed. I sent my XT brakes to the LBS when I couldn't bleed them, my SLX had the same problem. They can be bled but speak to people who know for the top tips. Both my SLX and XT brakes went spongy then to nothing before the first set of pads wore out!

    rangerbill

Paul, keep bleeding and keep topping up the reservoir, the bubbles should eventually stop, then fit everything back together andthey should be tickety boo…or in my case, not!
If you suck air in through the reservoir you need to start all over again 😥

    DeeW,
Funny you should say that I did hear a whistling/sucking at the rear of the bike twice on todays ride, first time I thought it was the start of a puncture or my camelback!
Be interesting to see if I am a cack handed gimp (likely) or a knackered Shimano part.
As I have had two incidents on brand new bikes that I hadnt touched thought I would see if anyone else had suffered.

Have heard of this reverse bleed technique, I'm guessing its messy?
So How come I can bleed linked brakes on a car and van, similar single brakes on a motorbike but I have to do some random reverse bleed black magic shite for a MTB?

3 mates have got them, two work and one doesnt. Its a cheap light if they work or a very expensive paper weight if it doesnt. I nearly bought one but followed the thread about a DIY LED upgrade for the lumicycle halogen. Its a fiddle and a faff but if you are prepared to do it, it works well

Most of the stuff Ive bought or Mrs B has bought have got holes in. Not with in weeks but in less than a year. Why not send it back? Well its a year old so hows that going to stand up as a complaint? Though I have T shirts that are decades old.
Yes their stuff is right on and in principle its a good thing to buy it, but to me it seems there is a hefy 'right on tax' on the price.
Without getting too northern I think they are taking the piss
