Excellent event, felt really good until the last lap when I had to fall off due to cramp in both calves. Have had to endure a shopping afternoon round Leeds….not good.
Can we still get posters, I had to leg it home (after paying Brant who kindly subbed me money for an inner tube..two punctures BEFORE the race started!) so missed out on the prize giving.

    Going to lie down now

All the blurb from the debate. Interesting the Rights of Way are always confirmed as being safe, however the permissive rights are glossed over and no confirmation is made about them.

See those mountain bike trails…….they’re permissive

What swamp boy says. I was taught that you had to swap your bar over regularly and using a flat file, run down the bar guides as they can wear unevenly.
Ive not done mine for years and it pulls to the left as well!

my response to my MP…..ok it might be little patronizing!

    Dear Mr Whittaker

I read your response to my wife’s letter regarding the forestry sell off and noticed that you had made a couple of school boy errors so thought I would reply to help you out.

Firstly you mentioned that the previous Government have sold of 25000 acres of woodland. That’s a big number. Unfortunately your boss’s document gives figures in Hectares. This is like acres, it’s a measurement of land, but a Hectare is bigger. So if you have a calculator handy you can try this conversion 1 Acre = 0.40468564224 Hectares.
The ConDem’d proposal is to sell off 285,000 hectares or if you like 637,000 acres. So you can see it’s quite a bit more than the previous Government
    Hope that helps
A good example of why people don’t want the woods to be sold off is Rigg Wood. I remember going there with my Wife and son when he was a toddler; we parked up and had a cycle around the area.
Rigg Wood was sold by the Forestry Commission last year. Although the new owners are obliged to continue to allow walkers on the Rights of Way they have been able to close the car park, remove picnic benches and put up fences, making it much more difficult for people to access the woodland in future.

This leads me to your second error, which hopefully if pointed out you will be able to amend the letters you send out.
In your letter you say the Government proposal guarantees protections on rights of access. That is correct our Rights of Way are protected, unfortunately the British public are not complaining about that. We are alarmed that we will lose our permissive rights of access.
Permissive means that the Landowner has given us Permission to go on the land where there is no Right of Way. That includes mountain bike trails, equestrian routes, dog walking routes and family friendly nature trails, access to lakes for water sport enthusiasts. It also includes car parks and countryside furniture like picnic tables and information boards. None of these are covered by Rights of Way and the Landowner is under no obligation to provide them. However the Forestry Commission has used public money wisely and invested in an infrastructure of access for the public that we can use for free.

I hope I have been able to help you understand why the public, that you represent and serve, are so angry at the proposed sell off. If you’re still struggling maybe come along to a demo and ask people. I’m sure they’ll be happy to help.

    All the best

Nice work Nicknoxx. Got to respond to our MPs letter. He made a silly mistake and mentioned the previous Governments sell of was 25000 acres. Oh dear he should have calculated it in Hectares then it wouldn’t have looked like such a big number. Im sure thats just a clerical error but I’ll point that out to him 😉
He also mentions that rights of access wont be effected. Well, we all know that and we are not against that, we are against the Permissive rights that we will loose, all the mountain bike trails and equestrian access plus the nature trails that dont run on Rights of Way.
Oh dear two glaring errors. What a sill man!

Please remember everyone that the forestry sell of is just a small part of the Public Bodies Reform bill. This will also effect Natural England, CCW and the National Parks.
    Thank you

Whinlatter 19th Feb for the next demo

Id go for something that readily available in the scrappers. My sister bought a mondeo for 450 and 12months MOT and tax. The idea being to run it for as long as possible then scrap it as her old saab blew the engine and its over 1300 for a second hand (NOT reconditioned) engine

We have a french scrappers near us so getting another engine for an old peugot might only be £300 quid. Peugot/citreon 1.9d engines are great. (504 pickup, 205)

VAG stuff, passats etc unless the more boxy ones stay away the engines are good but everything else fails. (sweeping generalization but based on experience golf Mk111, polo, passatB5?)

The Micra sounds a good route and its not too obscure that scrap parts will be cheap.

Buy 80/90s stuff and dont go for electrics!

Rovers and Hondas have the same engine (K series?)

I tried seal skinz and a big fail for me. Merino wool or wool hiking socks and some good winter boots.
Best thing I found is to stick them on the radiator before you go out.
If its really cold I’ll stick on an overshoe as well, but I get cold feet in summer!

I used K seal in my Transporter and the old Range rover, worked in both. The Transporter still going strong 2 years on.

Cheap fix should allow you to drive with the heater on!

I’ve got a racing snail, but he’s not very good. To try and make him lighter and thus faster I took his shell off. It didn’t work it though it just made him slugish.

Lube spray to get them off, use the straw to poke under grip, spray, wiggle pull off.
    Clean handlebar of all lube.
Spray inside of grip with car paint (any colour!) wiggle and slip on quickly. Paint dries and grip is on tight.

Be careful of the small hole at the other and as you can drop wet paint onto your bike if your not careful.

    Or buy lock on grips

I get golfers elbow and tennis elbow from digging/shoveling but that is a hot pain in the elbow and not the forearm. I use brufen gel and support bandages rather than the tablets.

I also have a grip pain in my left hand from a broken bone in my wrist that i didnt know about until a couple of months later (there was no obvious fall to break it just a magnificent save in football!). It shoots a pain from my thumb up my forearm if Im squeezing/lifting (even something as simple as pulling a water bottle out of a bottle cage for example)

Could it be a muscle/ligament damage in the forearm from repetitive jarring and lifting, swollen carpel tunnel syndrome?(yes I had that as well after shifting tons of topsoil!)

As mentioned above, get down to the GP and get it checked out, be better to treat it now rather than leave it to get any worse.

I should have listened to my Mum and got a job in an office!

My early inheritance as my Dad doesn’t ride it any more. It was free, Ive stripped a lot of the touring stuff off it and spent money on a new saddle. I love riding it, its ace!
Hoping to get out more on it next year so if anyone can recommend beginner/intermediate events around the South Pennines let me know please

I have both, I find the XTs arent as squishy as the SLX’s. The SLX were squishy right from the start, Ive never had to bleed a brake as much as the SLX and that includes my crappy old Kawasaki GT….now they were shite!

XT better feel and bite if you can afford them

Might not be the spring it might be a small bit of metal on the back that stops the derailleur spinning round. I had this problem with the same derailleur, snapped my chain and couldnt work how to thread the chain back through as the derraileur gave no tension. If you unbolt the derailleur from the frame, flip it over then try and rotate the cage through 360 you should see where the metal stop has been damaged.
I managed to bodge two old ones to make a half decent good one, otherwise its ‘kerching’ time at LBS

Yes it is signposted all the way round just watch you dont head off on the PBW north or south!

I know of a sign thats down at Holme Chapel and some waymarker posts have gone missing around the canal at Bottomley.

If you have an up to date OS map and the free leaflet you should be OK.

    Enjoy
