If you could justify around £30 per year, I would recommend eUKhost Ltd – a UK based hosting company. I had a hobby site with them a couple of years ago on their Copper shared cPanel hosting plan and it worked very well. (Note that ‘shared’ means that multiple sites are hosted on one server, so theoretically your performance could be impacted by your comrades but I never experienced any issues). The support was very good and there were good tutorials too.
By paying, you do get rights and you save the horrible banner advertising that tends to go with free sites.
The link above is my affiliate link so if you use it I would receive a small commission if you did sign up.

It looks like Shred’s RaceFace Circus of Dirt Round 3 was here in July 2011 so there must be some reasonable riding.

+1 support for the OP. In a similar position – BMX for my 40th or once I can manual, whichever comes first!

[*]Can you narrow down ‘immaculate tubes’ to a particular brand?[/*]
[*]Have you tried self-adhesive patches on these tubes rather than the rubber solution/patch combo?[/*]
[*]Are you allowing your rubber solution time to dry up before applying the patch ? (Apologies for the egg-sucking here).[/*]

its a shame they don’t but in a pump track and a small skills circuit but I imagine they are scared of all the hire bikes getting trashed

My son just got a bike with pedals for Christmas – if we can just refine his use of the brakes whilst we are there, that will be a success. I can practise wheelies, manuals, bunny hops etc – the usual Dad’s showing off stuff!!

Will be taking the Pig and big locks

What’s the deal with bike storage? Is it just a case of locking them up inside / outside somewhere?

Going to be there next week. If anyone else and fancies a ride, get in touch.

In answer to my own question, I found a tube of LS-X in the garage which was ideal:
    [list]
    [*]Never sets rock hard[/*]
[*]Does not shrink or crack with age[/*]
[*]Suitable for use from below freezing point to above boiling point of water[/*]
[*]Completely safe to use with drinking water[/*]

    Flip:

I have found even though the kids look intimidating most are really nice, they’ve given my son no end of help.

Agreed. They’re just into what they’re doing. Happy to talk, demo moves to my boy, even let me have a blast on their bikes.

    Sefton:

at 30 I dont think I could bring my self to ride one in public

Again – agreed – getting to the track would feel a bit of numpty. Would have to stick BMX in the back of the car to get there. Then should look no more daft or punter-ish then than 95% percent of the people in MTB trail centre car parks

+1 in support of Southern Yeti and flip – I’ve been having similar thoughts myself. Like, flip, I’ve got a boy who loves ragging the BMX tracks [on his Rothan]. I was deprived of a BMX in my youth by parents who thought I should ride a ‘proper bike’.

How about introducing a Bar Width Index (BWI?) – I propose: BWI = (0.5 x Bar Width) / (elbow to that fleshy bit between thumb and index finger).

    For me (0.5 x 660mm) / 300mm = 1.10

I think I would like to go a bit wider, though to around 690mm bars, i.e. 1.15.

Can someone describe the differences (geometry etc) between a BMX cruiser and a 24″ jump / trials bike?

The toddler dads must have gone to bed early or have been focusing on turbo trainers in the Bike Forum!

The scooters do look fun but I would be sad if it caused the Rothan to become sidelined.

    Thoughts?

Great programme, slightly spoilt by the fact that whatever aspect ratio I tried on our telly, the French subtitled sections were off the left edge of the screen!
I used to be a mountains fan but this year I’ve really got into those sprint finishes.

Thanks all. £12 splashed on a pair of V8 copies, I’m not too concerned about weight or longevity as only looking to use them to practise trackstands, manuals etc without being clipped in.

Something from the Genesis ranges should suit you – either Core or Latitude. Several price points in each range.

As mentioned above, the Soul and BFe geometry are the same so you would effectively be running a lightweight BFe. Take a look at http://cotic.co.uk/geek/. That might be fine for you, depending on your weight and riding style but could invalidate the warranty so speak to Cotic – their customer services are very good. (Or buy a BFe!)

It sounds like the decision has been made but MachineHead Crank Calculator is a good way of taking the decision making out of your own hands!

This would have recommended 165mm cranks for OP. The calculation was devised for road biking where a good cadence style would be assumed. I think for mountain biking it helps to have slightly longer cranks for greater leverage to allow more explosive responses. This then needs to be tempered with a decision about ground clearance.

Thanks – not necessarily ‘no help’. The green light always comes on so I hadn’t thought of that oh-so-simple lateral thinking. I’ll bear that in mind as one solution.

Try Dirt – Very dated but kids don’t care about that and it’s just plain silly. My two year old thinks its great and it’s hilarious to watch him try to bunny hop his Rothan! No swearing, just some bangin’ toones.

I’ve always serviced my Fox Float rearshock as I found a really good little video on the Fox site that showed how easy it is to do. I’ve just looked now and I can’t find it – perhaps it made it too easy – no money for Mojo!

I’ll contemplate my forks after reading this thread. Anyone got particular video recommendations?

also the lower spacer/bush may wear a bit quicker.

So I’m sure BETD would recommend upgrading these to their own products!

I’ve been out on my 04 Enduro tonight (my one and only mountain bike and still going stong after 7.5 years). I’ll happily retract my earlier comments as they set me thinking I’d now be tempted by the upgrade myself if I was planning an Alps trip.

Totally agree that these bikes still compare well to today’s. They are lighter than they look and were leading edge at the time. Nothing major has changed. Incredible how few you see out and about considering their popularity back then.

These – £118 seems a lot to spend upgrading an old frame.
Original geometry here. Given the current fashion for slacker head angles, could you fit a longer fork anyway, within reason.

    Front tyre needs cornering grip

You can generally hold a rear wheel slide, but if the front goes you’re often landing on your face

    etc
Well I stand corrected there – thanks all for input. I can’t think of an occasion where I’ve come close to loosing the front end whereas I’ve had one significant off and a few recovered rear cornering incidents over the years. Maybe that say something about my riding or perhaps my front set up has been good enough.

Maybe spending two grand bike got me worried in fear of breaking it, I should chill out and enjoy the trail and bike.

Most posts have been arguing about comfort when the real concern was about component strength.
Trail centres tend to flow better and more smoothly than normal trails so impact should be pretty low, certainly compared to any naturally rocky area. Bike manufacturers wouldn’t make much money if their products didn’t stand up to ‘average’ consumer conditions which I’m sure means trail centres these days. So I guess the only concern would be for particularly heavy riders.

21 years climbing so far. E6, 8a, V8, Scottish VI etc.
10 years MTB so far. Can barely track-stand, pull a wheelie or get down a steep hill without dabbing.

Why don’t MTBers session (boulder) more??

What’s the cleanest way to break open a DX light – I think they are glued.
My switch works about 1 in 20 times so I tend to persist then leave it on full beam all ride. I would like to see whether it is fixable / replaceable.

What is the current thinking on dropping the saddle on a carbon bike? Is it still a mid-ride no-no or have attitudes relaxed / build improved?
