I might liberate a (very) small one from the local woods later. There’s no way I’m paying £40 for a big one, we have no kids and we’re not going to be at home much.

I have a Klipsich dock, but I will be using it through a (small) PA in a couple of weeks for a party. It sounds a bit muddy and compressed at the moment. I have a decent Cyrus / Dynaudio setup in the living room and I’m not expecting it to match that, but it could be better than it is I’m sure.

I stopped buying gig tee shirts around twenty years ago – if I had any left I don’t think they’d fit me :-) I did have a Van Halen 1984 shirt until about 1998 though…..

It’s not the real anniversary – I was in London at the time visiting a friend, and his girlfriend at the time was P.A. to the lady running the “Trading Places” charity at the time. She was told he’d died but the announcement was being held back until after the real funeral to give the family privacy. Sure enough, about a week later, there was the news. Funny old world.

It’s where you go to report potholes and road damage so the council can explain why they’re ignoring it.

The thing is that even if she “forgives” your comment today, this will come back to haunt you later on. It may be five years, it may be fifteen, but you are going to pay for this….

I had a Moggy van, but that was in 1985. I thought about buying one again a few years later and was reminded that they were, essentially, a MK1 Marina, the main difference being that the Marina is a much better car. This alone was enough to put me off. Now, an old Landy with a turbo diesel engine transplant from something Japanese, well that’s always been tempting….

I’m not a fan of the bloke, but fair play to him for this one – incredibly hard.

If I saw a dog upon entering a foodery, I’d turn straight around and go somewhere else. Sorry.

Again, why ? The dog isn’t doing the cooking, or serving. Is it that you don’t like dogs begging at the table ? (perfectly understandable) or that the dog may be a hygiene issue ?

As the owner of a well behaved dog it baffles me the number of country pubs that won’t have dogs in at all, but are happy to have walkers or farmers wearing muddy boots, not to mention mountain bikers with lycra and muddy arses !

Dogs – no chance for food, not even for a drink if i can avoid it

Just out of curiosity, what is the problem with dogs ? A restaurant I can understand, but in a pub what’s the harm ?

Cannot abide Huey, self absorbed brain dead moron with a big mouth IMO. How many weeks does it take to learn how to pronounce Gruf Rhys’s name ffs ?

Plenty of advice here – I’d consider one myself, especially if you are realistic about running costs. Personally I’d avoid the 2.5, just not quick enough, but a decent 2.7 on standard size wheels is an amazing drive.

I went through 20 years of ‘live for work’ then woke up to the fact I was swimming against the tide and this sort of thing reinforces the fickle nature of employment. Why would anyone commit wholeheartedly to something that is entirely transient and can be arbitrarily changed on a whim?

Wake up, move on and get your personal life back.

I find myself almost entirely in agreement with this, the only thing I would say is maybe keep this option in reserve if possible, wait and see what the restructuring brings and if things look just as bad three months down the line then maybe then is the time to jump ? Also, keep copious notes of all conversations, print off emails etc to support your case if you decide to go this way. It’s important not to flounce off in a huff, but to run things in your own way with a plan and a feeling of control.

    Good luck.

My trolleys get the Scandinavian flick

I do tend to try and hold the slide for as long as I can……my record is just past the bagels

Ah, well I only rally trolleys in the garden centre. In the supermarket it’s F1 style smoothness.

When I push a trolley through a supermarket I make quiet engine, gearchange and tyre skidding noises to myself. I’m 46.

I still say a bit of a service and keep what you have.

I would agree. At least give it a try.

much of the Naim I have heard has been almost unlistenable, with a very tiring, pushy sound that only suits a very narrow style of music.

Has that mostly been at shows?

A friend of mine has about £20K’s worth of Naim (running through Wilson Benesch Arcs) which I found really hard to listen to until he upgraded his CD player last year which transformed the system. I went with him to a Naim demo evening at Hoole Hall in Chester 18 months ago and the room was awful, even my Naim loving friend was wincing until the price tag got to about £35K, at which point I will admit the stuff was sounding very good ! As an aside, the same chap has taken a job where he has to stay away four nights a week and he’s bought a Cyrus integrated amp with a squeezebox for the week nights after listening to my setup.

“The Throwback” is the 2nd funniest Tom Sharpe IMO. Unfortunately I recognise some characteristics in that book that may apply to myself….

    I’d rate them
    1. Indecent Exposure
    2. The Throwback
    3. Riotous Assembly (sequel to Indecent)

    All brilliant :-)

I’m an ex Cyrus owner, and wouldn’t go back to them. With my Dynaudios it was just too thin and harsh.

Cyrus is very detailed and fast – some may say thin, harsh and bright as above.

Strange, I have Cyrus gear (CD8X, PreVS2 & 8 power) with Dynaudio Audience 62’s. The sound is far from thin and harsh – however, much of the Naim I have heard has been almost unlistenable, with a very tiring, pushy sound that only suits a very narrow style of music.

Afternoon tea in the Penninsula Hotel is fun, silver service from waiters in white coats and cakes ! Wonderfully colonial, no shorts allowed though. Not the sort of thing one would usually do, but a great memory.

They are a HK based company that ship grey imports from the UK. Plenty of info on talk photography

I have used Kerso (who is recommended in the TP thread) and would reccommend him.

I have an IWC Spitfire, 38mm case (the older model to this, with a different font)which I bought in Hong Kong for my 40th. I love the fact that hardly anyone knows what it is, compared to a Rolex or Breitling (which most people will assume is a fake anyway). IMO the Oris is a nice watch, but won’t hold it’s value at all well, rather like most TAG pieces, whereas my watch is worth more now than it cost seven years ago.

Seconded Demon Tweeks – have a look at the website, find a style you like, then drop me an email with the details. I worked there for a while and can get you a better price than you will get on your own.

Terrible news. I didn’t see the crash and frankly I don’t want to, but from the descriptions of the accident it sounds like the car has gone into the wall roll hoop first, much like what happened to Greg Moore. Awful, but hopefully quick and painless

Earlier Renaultsport Clio’s (172 & 182’s) had “cold engine” maps which meant it was impossible to thrash them until they were warmed up, I assume the 200’s are the same. Should be no issue at all.

Plenty of B&B’s in Betws-y-Coed, both trails are rideable in the rain but you will get very wet. I suggest not riding Penmachno alone as you could be on your own a long time if you break down or injure yourself. As to whether they are worth the trip, that’s up to you to say.
