I'm doing a BTEC level 2 now. It's quite basic, but it's got me back into thinking like a photographer again rather than someone who takes decent snaps. I'd recommend it.

I've got an Acoustic Research turntable, in the garage, if anyone fancies it. It was a fine piece of equipment and I'm going to sell it.

    What's a turntable granny ? :-)

Sorry to be harsh – don't get me wrong, I like llandegla, but this is the unfortunate reality of making a business out of a trail centre. Penmachno won't be having these problems.

You're right – Penmachno isn't having these problems. However, Penmachno isn't a private forest, with a visitor centre employing staff. Also Penmachno is very likely to close (or at least stop maintaining the trail) as there aren't enough people putting money in the honesty parking to keep the place going.

    NZ beer is crap.

Other than that, and the distance from everywhere else, I'd be there now.

Wellington over Auckland every day for me, but if I could pick anywhere I'd probably say Nelson, on the North of South Island.

I used to know someone who owns a nice hotel by the river in Betws-y-Coed. Weddings are a pain for hotels as most people only want the bedrooms for, say, the Saturday night, which means that they are pretty empty on the Friday. Without the wedding they would probably rent the rooms for both nights or even longer, so they lose out on bookings and have the extra expense (laundry etc) of room changes. Add to this the level of staffing required to properly cater for a wedding party and you're looking at quite a sum. Obviously this gets passed on to the customer, the OP in this case.

The chap I knew in Betws said weddings are such a pain they doubled their asking price to put people off. It made no difference to the bookings, so they doubled it again. This made no difference either, but he's now very happy to cater for them as it makes a lot of money.

Moral of the story ? Either get married in a Register office, hire a marquee and do your own food, or suck it up, pay the money and get a good photographer so you've got something to look at whilst you pay the bills off.

IIRC Misty Dawn was the stage name of pornstar John Holmes's partner in the 70's,before he got mixed up in a big cocaine bust.

Many years ago when I was an ATC cadet we had a trip round the Brough factory where Buccaneers had been made. Apparently back in the day they would test fly the Bucs at "Zero minus Zero", which actually equated to about nine feet above the water.

SR71 story above is great :-)

A lot of people on talkphotography are raving about the Panasonic GF1. The problem many people have with DSLR's like the Nikons, Canons and Sonys mentioned above is their size and weight can make them a pain to carry around. The GF1 is small, light, and very good. There's loads on info on the thread I've linked to. If I wasn't a good way down the Nikon route myself I'd certainly consider one.

The "Foxy Knoxy" nickname was given to her by the other members of a soccer team she played in aged six. I think she's strange, but being strange doesn't mean guilty.

A gallery & picture framers, or a homebrew / speciality tea & coffee shop (not a cafe, I'd sell tea leaves and coffee beans).

My observations of the NAIM kit were that with appropriate speakers (Rather than the £6K monsters used fro the demo) in a normal room it would probably be great.

Offboard power supplies make a huge difference, enough to make me want to buy them for my Cyrus kit when cash allows.

Also their HD based system is nowhere near as good as a decent CD player – a point conceded by the chap from NAIM.

SFB, if you have nothing useful to add, why do you bother ? ADD ?

I've got a fair bit of Cyrus kit, with Dynaudio speakers and I love it. I went to a NAIM demo at Hoole Hall hotel in Chester a couple of weeks ago with a pal who hasabout 20 grand's worth of their kit, and I have to say that until we got to the £15K system I was far from impressed – although this was probably down to the room we were in and the choice of music being played. Moral of the story is take some music you like, and know well, and rely on your ears more than internet opinions.

I thought it was a bit too drawn out – how many times do we need to see the same sweeping shot of the BC coastline ? The whole series has felt a bit slow, compared to his previous stuff.

Maybe my telly attention span has got a bit short recently.

Not a NMA fan myself, but I did see Ed busking in Chester the other day – I assume he still plays with them ? We used to get stoned together in Oxford 20 odd years ago when I lived there. Small world.

We sold our B&B (Bryn Llewelyn) a few years ago now, but if you go to the tourist information centre or the bike shop they'll point you somewhere good. Trails should be ok. Have fun.
