    I’ve got this….

    Supertooth Disco

…seriously pleased with it. I’ve owned it for over 4 years and taken it on holiday used it on a beach paired with my phone.

It is constantly plugged in to the mains and with a profile manager on my phone it pairs automatically, wifi turns on, tunein radio starts up and streams radio 6 to wake me up.

Performed flawlessly and the battery lasts a long time. It’s loud, sound quality is pretty good too with a fair bit of bass for it’s size. Easily enough for any room and good enough to keep six people on a Beach entertained.

I think the Disco 2 is out now though I don’t know what the differences are.

    It says…

    Hydration Pack Features:

Bottle: Resealable cap & available in 750ml
Electrolyte Tablets: 20 Tabs per pack, Available in Berry, Citrus or Cherry/Orange
Make 30 Ltrs of energy drink with this Special Offer

so is that 20 per tube or 20 in total?

***Edit*** figured it….that man above is correct..I vote this cold!

…and besides I don’t want another friggin’ plastic water bottle. Got enough of them as it is.

17 years and counting….handlebars, stem, brake calipers, crank arms rear derailleur (although probably needs replacing, frame (is a replacement I suppose but is about 16 years old, headset (came with the frame), one of the ergo shifters (the other is a replacement but is still 17 years old), front and rear hubs. Campagnolo Chorus is (was) great. I ride 125 mile commute all year round but I just have to service regularly. My mountain bike is only 6 years old.

Just replaced a Token Bb which lasted just two months with a TA Axix pro. Not cheap but at least I can upgrade the bearings. The Token uses proprietary bearings so when they wear you have bin the lot. What a waste! Using ’96 Campag Chorus on mine.

tthew I think the 16 is the inner diameter so 1mm could make quite a big difference, the 15mm bearings are easy to get.

Great, 619032RSR bearings seem pretty common. I’ll get the TA bottom bracket then. Thanks for your help.

    I hate throw away components.

Tucker, I’ve got a Campag crank set so must be Italian and I’m still concerned about the tapers.

I was looking at those TA bottom brackets but the bearings look really exposed from water that will find it’s way into the steel frame. What bearings do they use?

OsmAnd is my favourite. Bit of a learning curve but well worth it once you’ve the hang of it. It saves direct to memory card if you’re using a phone and then you could upload it to a site like GPSies for further editing. I don’t use the 1KM privacy feature on Strava as it means I can’t do segments within that area so I use the cropping feature.

    Moon Shield, I’ve got two.

You need two for when one breaks down.

They are bright lights but the first light breaking didn’t stop me buying a second though.

They’re good because the rubber mounting strap goes anywhere, they’re possibly too bright and they’re USB chargeable.

The weak point is the rubber bung for the USB port. Moisture will get in but I had been using my first light without mud guards so the water was being thrown directly up onto its underside which is where the USB port is located. The light basically needs this port to be behind a more watertight screw-on lid or something.
The charge lasts about a couple of hours. Enough for two days worth of commutes in my case but can easily be charged at work.

Yep…what can I say….I’m lazy. I saw this as fun, hard work but I enjoyed cycling through flooded brooks and screaming headwinds after work which I would otherwise have done my best to avoid. I saw another element to cycling which I would most likely not have experienced if this challenge hadn’t been created. I usually just cycle my daily 25 mile commute and a bit of mtb’ing over the weekend if the weathers nice. I don’t like cycling through soggy clay as it is round my area at the moment. For some reason this challenge inspired me as I’m sure it has for thousands of others cyclists. On the 24th when it started I thought 310 miles would be well beyond me given the state of the weather but I’ve now realised what my limits are and the limits of my bike’s components which will be important for a tour I intend to do later in the year. I’m not thinking of the branding, don’t even care for the Roundel, just the challenge. The data’s recorded and so when I need to inspire myself again when my ebb is low I’ll just check back and see what I accomplished on my own with no assistance and use that to pull myself up and get riding again.

I thought it was a great idea…I would probably not have gone out other than doing the normal commuting miles. I’m inherently lazy. I managed just short of 470 miles and every ride began or ended in the dark and all but one day it was chucking it down. The wind…well we all know how horrible that has been. In fact perhaps the best weather is today when the challenge has finished. Unfortunately I just want to chill, clean my bike and wash my clothes. I didn’t go out on Christmas day and I had to work 4 of those days so what ever the cynics say it worked for me. I mapped out a nice 90 miler route which I’ll start using as a regular run out and some nice extended commutes home. There’s a lot of positives which I’ll take out from my experiences over the past week.

It’s been raining incessantly all week which is why I’m glad I’m doing the Festive500 as without that I’d have no motivation to get out there to be honest. I really want hydraulic disc brakes to come out sooner on road bikes. They are essential for this weather. I almost killed myself descending a steep hill with a tail wind into Eastbourne the other day. I couldn’t stop and went straight through a set of red lights over a road crossing. Sure I suprised the driver of a car who almost ran into me. I felt extremely guilty but there was nothing I could do.

Thanks for the offer but it has to be braze on and preferably one I can get either this evening or tomorrow morning. I’m close to Evans Gatwick so it’d hopefully be one they have in stock. I don’t mind if it’s low end so long as it can work on the 55/39 chainring combo. The problem I have had in the past….with a Centaur triple derailleur is it rubbed against the large chainring. It only had one screw for the braze-on

I’m getting sucked into it. Up to yesterday I’d only completed 30 odd miles then decided to go for a ride which got longer and longer. The weather was so bad but I treated it like most of my commutes which have been in horrid weather lately. I’m now thinking it’s not so bad after all. It’s a difficult challenge in this weather but I guess the key is little and often say two short rides a day. Unsurprisingly there’s plenty of Aussies at the top of the leader board.

I’m no pro but when I laid my new floorboards over a year ago I used Floorboard clamps which helped get a really good fit. Very pleased with the results and they were quick and easy to use too. I hired mine from HSS.

For my commute I tried on the Northwave Fahrenheit GTX Shoe, the Louis Garneau Glacier Road Shoe, the Louis Garneau 0 Degrees Ergo Grip Mountain Bike Shoe, the Northwave Celsius Artic GXT Shoes and the Shimano MW81 Gore-Tex MTB SPD Shoes. None of them have the tight comfortable fit around the ankle that I was looking for and I’d be certain the water will drip down into the shoe. I’ve got some expensive pearl izumi wxb overshoes which are relatively easy to get on and use velcro instead of a zip so I can get a tight comfortable fit around the ankle. Still not as convenient as a waterproof cycle shoe could be. When I tried them on I thought the MW81 had the best ankle “boot” but still not as tight as I would have liked.

I’ll wait for a better design, they’re expensive after all and I can put up with a little inconvenience of an overshoe that works rather than an expensive waterproof shoe that doesn’t work as it should.

Kryton I like getting a long segment especially if it’s been ridden by a lot of riders. The longest segment I have is only two miles but I’m still more pleased with getting the one I’ve ridden hardest for and had more failed attempts at.

Is there anyway of attaching this above the brake caliper on a road bike so that it frees up space on the handlebars like the B&M Cyo?

funkynick the hub will feel slightly notchy but it’ll be barely noticeable once the wheel is built up and attached to your forks

What’s the best durable 23c or small 25c winter tyre and Raceblade long combo anyone? I had the older Cruds and clearances were too tight for Armadillo All Condition 25c tyres. Even Michelin Pro 3’s 23c wore a hole straight through the Cruds on my frame where they meet the caliper at the back.

Same problem with about three lights so after 2 years of commuting and getting fed up of turning the switch end of the lights I went down the dynamo route earlier this year. Built the wheel myself on a CXP33 32 spoke rim with Shutter Precision hub and a B&M cyo light which I got cheap from an online shop in Germany. Total cost was around £160 give or take but it’s so much less hassle and has been flawless in all this rain

Margin Walker thanks for posting that link to the documentary…..I’m watching it now but have one burning question. If Lance was taking blood transfusions then wouldn’t the scarring be visible now? Tyler Hamilton said he could still see his scars during the interview long after he had been doping himself.

Not sure about bikepacking but my carradice SQR Slim is great for commuting. Can get a laptop aswell as a change of clothes into it. I slid on ice last Feb and my rear mech would have suffered damage (as it had the year before) had it not been for the bag which was completely unscathed from sliding along the road surface.

Just 9mm QR at the mo. I was chatting to the bloke who sells them on ebay and he was discussing with the manufacturer to get a similar set up to Hope where you can easily convert to 15 or 20mm. Whether they do or not is another matter. It would give them a huge edge over the SON dyno hubs, even though in my opinion they have an edge already being half the price with better power curves. My only concern is whether they’re serviceable or not. Nothing has gone wrong with it yet so I haven’t needed to know at this stage.

Rob, is the standlight powered via a large capacitor or a battery?

I see potential in creating a lighting unit that also acts as a regulator with a cache battery to power or charge ancillary devices via a plug similar to the plug in exposures existing lights which supply power to the rear light.

I’m sure this won’t be far down the road since it would get rid of the cables that exist with the e-werk system.

The SP dyno hub by the way is great. I’m not sure whether it has serviceable parts but it has powered my B&M light everyday for the past couple of months flawlessly. I can’t wait for the darker nights. The light is hassle free and very bright and I have a system where I charge my Galaxy S2.
