So how much is a Shimano lever and where do I get one from ?
CRC maybe
Do you have a link ?
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=67211Yes but no but yes
£35
I was told by someone, Think it was a willowing Pussy, that I was inept because all I want is a lever.
£16 for just a lever for Hope.
So they must be a lot cheaper than the £16 for a Hope lever, but where from ?
POSTED 3 HOURS AGO #I think with a username like yours then it clearly shows you don’t really even need brakes riding around the dales!!!
When your riding is hard and fast that’s when you can really notice what a good brake is, and hope just don’t cut it!pussywillowFree MemberSinglespeed_Shep – Member
I may have missed a bit but did he actually send it back or is he just shouting at the internet
Shouting at ze interwebz.
NO product has a 100% reliability rate, what matters is if they fix it once its bust.
POSTED 1 MINUTE AGO # REPORT-POSTThey’re gonna need more staff then to be able to cope with all the returns!!! :D

Would you be saying that at the top of mountain after working so hard to get up there looking forward to the descent only to find out there’s no brake fluid left inside the damn thing!
Yes, exactly like I did when a newly service shock packed down on my at the top of the climb. I knew it would get sorted but was still at the top of the hill with the only way being down. I took it a bit easier on the way down but it was still fun (at least partially because the bikes handling was interesting). I’d do the same if a brake failed, just take it easier and enjoy what you can. Why let it ruin yourdaydays!!! FFS.

pussywillowFree MemberIt’s all fine and dandy saying “it’s all right cos if anything goes wrong it doesn’t matter cos there customer service is fantastic! “. :D

Hmmm. Seems very strange that people sound like they’ve had exceptional service from hope when I’ve only received and heard of negative feedback from them..hmmmm… I wonder….hmmm.
Did you ring them up with the same sort of attitude as you’re displaying on this post, or did you speak to them normally and respectfully? not bulls**ting them. If someone rang me up mouthing off and generally being a pain, I’d be less inclined to help them too!
Most of the stuff the (2 man) warranty dept see’s is out of manufactures warranty or has been broken by misuse, it’s up to the guy on the ground to make the call on how to help. I’ve personally seen Nick swap all the seals in a guys brakes at a race because he’s covered them in WD40 and swollen them, he walked off afterwards and didn’t even say thanks let alone offer to pay for them!
Over and out!
POSTED 2 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POSTI spoke to them a damn site better than the way your speaking to me lad.
pussywillowFree MemberWell if there’s one thing good that’s come of this thread… it’s that loyalty is still strong in this country! :D

The guy that rode into a tree?

I love the ineptitude of some of the peeps on here, Typical example

I crashed into a tree a few week back and snapped my shimano xt lever, I was really surprised at how cheap shimano parts are! £35 for the lever unit!! Had that of been hope I bet I’d be lucky to get change from £100!
Fact £36 for a shimano xt lever £16 for a hope.
BTW I run maintain Shimano Hope and Avid. Only brake fade I’ve had is Shimano, worse ones to set up Avid, easiest to bleed Hope.”I think you will find that for the whole lever res clamp, the lot as Nobby says!

Or in most likelyhood they wouldn’t have charged you for one.
POSTED 5 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POSTNow your forcing me to bring up there customer service aren’t you!
Tbh I’d rather not deal with them, especially on the phone. And I don’t believe for one minute that if you rang them up telling them you’ve crashed into a tree and broke the lever that they’d say ” ok don’t worry about it, we’ll send you another one free of charge cos we look after our customers!” :roll:pussywillowFree Memberspectabilis – Member

Just switched from Elixir 5s to 2nd hand Hope minis. Too soon to comment on overall quality, but certainly the power and modulation of the Hopes feels like a big improvement. Brakes were fitted by a guy I know who spends half the year as a mechanic for one of the world cup downhill teams. He won’t touch Shimano / Avid with a bargepole and advocates Hope all the way. I’ll happily admit to knowing jack all about most of this, but given his line of work and his experience, his opinion counts a hell of a lot for me.
Good to see that many of the people on the hope side come across as having a fair bit of mechanical knowledge and post detailed information on experiences and solutions to any setup issues .
Whereas the shimano camp ……..
+1 for that. Having trawled through 4 pages of this thread (and being an avowed neutral) I’d say that the Hope advocates are way more credible than the bashers…
So what your saying is that you have to have c-tech qualification as a bike mechanic to look after your hope brakes!
That’s not good is it!
NO just don’t blame the product for YOUR ineptitude.
If you can’t do it take it to your LBS thats what they’re there for..My ineptitude?? I’ve had shimano’s and hope brakes a long time, different models as well and I find shimano a lot better and easier to bleed.
But your right about people having to take hope brakes to there local bike shop cos they’re such hassle to do if you haven’t got plenty time, Whereas my xt’s take me about 5 mins to bleed.pussywillowFree Memberfunkrodent – Member

What I like about shimano is the fact that they’re so simple to bleed and maintain yet there performance is outstanding!Who wants to have brakes that are a hassle to bleed anyway!?

Bought some XTs as well this year and they are the same power and feel as my 2002 Hope Minis. As with all things though a few bad components or maintenance can cause lots of issues.
[/quote]And your reference to all your 20 mates having the same issue – don’t you think that if Hope had a genuine issue with reliability they would have fixed it? Spending money on warranty is wasting money. Getting quality right in the first place costs much much less than a warranty replacement.
I never said all of them have the same issue but most have and they’re all disappointed with them.
And I totally agree with you about getting quality right in the first place being a lot cheaper…..so why aren’t they?pussywillowFree MemberYeah I know how to bleed brakes. The point is they’ve been crap from new, I thought they just needed bedding in, 5 rides later and they’re still the same! Now it’s alright saying I haven’t bled them properly or making other excuses, but there can be a group of up to 20 of us that go riding, and not one person has anything good to say about hope! I liked my hope minis from years ago, but they haven’t advanced since in terms of power and only gone backwards in terms of reliability compared to other brands at the moment.

@Dr .
My post wasn’t a direct response to yours.
But fair enough your choice, good luck with your avids have u got a bell fitted yet??
POSTED 10 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POSTTbh, even avids are a million times better! I have a big circle of friends I ride with who have had nothing but problems with hope brakes. All I can seriously think is that a lot of you defending hope are either working for them, selling there products or just too bloody loyal to admit they’re shite!
My shimano xt’s are in a league of there own in comparison.I bled the brakes as they had no power in them and felt spongy, apparently this is how a lot of them feel.
Judging by mine and what’s happening to a lot of my friends hope brakes, I think they all have a very slow leak.pussywillowFree Memberspectabilis – Member

Still as powerful as ever.
Like I said, they haven’t advanced in terms of performance but have got a lot worse in terms of reliability.
