My gf happened to mention in passing to her mother, the possibility of me and said gf getting married. We‘ve no intention of such a thing at least for a few years yet…

Yeah, right… when you say “we” you know you mean “I”, don’t you?

Does that mean people don’t pop round to Pat’s gaff in the middle of the night for coffee and biscuits anymore?

Asked his wife once if she thought he performed better home or away, can’t believe she slapped me.

Lucky there aren’t more of them or you’d have to call the police because then it would be a murder.

my GF was actually filling up the bucket round the corner at the time

Not sure why that ^^ made me chuckle to myself… 😀

The various theories above ranging from organised crime to local scrotes are probably all true. MTBs are easily shifted desirable items at the moment so are of interest to organised crime plus local scrotes need to fund their habits.

Can’t think who buys off them to make it all worth while though…

My definition is that you need a degree of physical fitness and a degree of skill otherwise its just a game .

Now, that’s just elitist… why should sport be exclusively for graduates?! 😉

Either will do but if you’re using FlyUp Downhill then you may as well take the DH bike and ‘go for it’ a bit more 8)

Physical or mental activity. If competition is involved it is a sport; otherwise it is a hobby or a pastime. Excludes Reality Television, obviously… 8)

Along similar lines, I can remember once having a barn owl fly with me at shoulder height for approximately 200m along an open trail once. That was pretty surreal.

I’d be having a word with her if she knows what going to bed with a 12 year old is like… 😯

Personally, I can’t see beyond my waist for some reason so don’t notice the problem.

In the Forest of Dean. Way back we messed about as kids in the woods but mountain biking came along years later. My first ATB would have been end of the 80s, frame miles too big, bar ends to make a highland cow envious. Didn’t progress to a MTB until later in the 90s 8)

After the media stampede dies down and the public start buying processed frozen beef meals again I think you’ll find the big issue will be fraud. Agriculture is big business in Europe, especially so in France (where horsemeat isn’t anywhere near as common these days as it used to be), and everytime a horse is slipped into the beef foodchain a cow isn’t. Horse is a lot cheaper than beef and farmers don’t like being ripped off (especially in France!). The underlying story revolves around money, miss-selling and fraud.

However, the thing putting me off is downhilling

I really like to pedal my little heart out and i’m afraid i’m just going to spin out too quickly and people will get away from me

How do you regular SS’s deal with it?

Pies, Pasties, Cake & Beer seem to help build up momentum on the downhills…

Never mind all the above posts, they’re not really doing it properly; merely playing at it. To really ride singlespeed you need to be fitter, stronger, and more technically adept than a geared-bike rider.
It annoys me on here that people don’t take singlespeeding seriously; they mess around at it and think they’re cool or something.
In answer to your question, yes, you do have to be strong to do it properly and it takes years to get to the point where you can really shout out “Yes, I am a singlespeeder!”

It’s a good event. The field soon spreads out and there are no real singletrack bottlenecks. If you enjoy riding ‘out there’ in the great outdoors then you’ll enjoy the event. Unless you’ve got your 5 set up really light I’d vote for the HT over the longer route. Depends which you find more comfortable really…

been on the lookout for a new touring bike and started to notice a few things.
a complete touring bike from a uk wide bike seller can be bout for not much over £600. a full shimano groupset, disc brakes, rack, specced up gear on larger sizes, pretty much all you need.
a certain niche/ more fashionable bike seller sells a frame made from the same steel for a penny less than £600.

There’s your problem, you’re looking for a tourer. I’ll bet the “certain niche / more fashionable” frame isn’t marketed as a tourer, is it? A tourer is hardly fashionable (in a current marketing sense) and so does not carry a premium. Now, a 29″ bikebacking touring-light, mtb-cross frame capable of taking a fat front, that’s a different matter! Kaching… 8)

A good way to get a base knowledge of the area is to enter an event like the Wild Boar Chase.

Alternatively, post on here (STW) a week or so before a trip here (FoD) and ask if anyone can show you around, or go through FoDMTBGuides or Pedalabikeaway and pay for a guide (not a lot of cost if there’s a group of you).

It is a frustrating area because there is so much riding so close to where you might be at any given time! I often see people riding along the road towards some of the better known singletrack and missing out some equally good but little known links. I’ve been fortunate enough to have introduced a lot of riders to trails in the area but these days I just pootle along somewhat more slowly than most youngsters want to ride 😉

We carried out a similar survey at work. 100% of staff felt that everyone else was less competent than themselves. (You’d get much the same result asking the same question of drivers too).

granted he wouldn’t have had to stop for fuel as often, if at all and he wouldn’t have been as knackered as he said he was, but assuming that he stuck to the speed limits all the way through France (which is VERY difficult not to do given the Froggies love of speed traps and timing on the autoroutes) would he have won?

From my (very limited) experience of filming/photo-shoots/etc it probably took them 2 – 3 days to make the journey with external camera shots, city traffic shots, food & comfort breaks, and so on. It’s not really a race. Or is it? 😕 😯

This one belongs to someone I know (and is currently for sale I believe)

Engine: 3 litre Porsche 911 flat 6. Race spec – race camshafts, headwork and a pair of triple Weber 410DF’s, equal length headers and custom exhaust.
    MSD 6-AL electronic ignition system
Gearbox – alloy Porsche 915 5 speed with limited slip diff.

    I’ve got a bike
You can ride it if you like
    It’s got a basket
    A bell that rings
And things to make it look good
I’d give it to you if I could

    Forest of Dean?

There is the ‘Family Trail’ – 11 miles through the forest with 2 road crossings and
The ‘Peregrine Trail’ – approx. 6 miles between Monmouth & Symonds Yat East (beside the River Wye).
In addition there are miles of forest fire roads and several other family attractions

None of the analogies in this thread are relevant to the case referred to. The court has already ruled on blame. What is happening now is that the Insurers are seeking to reduce the amount they pay out and to delay that payout for as long as they can.
The girl is disabled and in need of 24/7 care, the driver is probably finding it difficult to live with the consequences of that night. Meanwhile, the insurance company are going to drag it out for as long as they can…
