Do you reckon we should start an e-petition for a decent summer. Only 100,000 signatures and the powers that be will make it happen?

Careful what you wish for. This time last year reservoirs were nearly empty and hosepipe bans were being introduced. People were doing rain dances… 😯

There’s a junior (under 18s) XC event here tommorrow too. The ‘Dean Dash’ but it won’t affect the DH trails although I think it will be using part of the Freeminer trail. Starts 10.00am.

Utter rubbish, did you watch the game?

    Well, yes.

I wouldn’t say Walsh was biased, rather that Wales were better at reading his interpretation of the (very open to interpretation) rules!

Plus, England do themselves no favours by delaying the put in so much of the time.

IMO England lost the game by not committing to the breakdown. OK in defence but they need to commit faster and stronger at other times.

why do so many scottish people really dislike English sports teams?

    Something deep-fried on their shoulder?

Even when 99% of people on here agree, there is a greater than 50% chance that there will be disagreement.

The law is indeed the law but we all make judgements to break the law to varying degrees. Whether this is a good thing or not will depend on whether you benefit or whether you are disadvantaged.

Of course, speed in excess of the limit does not necessarily include driving too fast for the conditions. Statistics are very adaptable dependent on one’s point of view and really prove very little.

EDIT: ooh, 43 seconds too slow. The irony… 😉

    Can occasionally cause problems.

A few years ago a group of us booked a trip to Italy, flying over with bikes. One guy organised the trip, booked the flights, etc.. Another member of the party, known to all of us for many years by his first name (which was also the name he was called by his wife and in his business) was booked onto the flight in that name. Of course, when we check in for the flight we find out that he has a totally different first name! He wasn’t allowed to board on that ticket and had to book and pay for a new ticket. Luckily, they allowed him on the same flight.

You could cross over to Monmouth and with a bit of FP catch the dead end BW by Penallt

…or stay on the same side through Wyesham along the old railway to Redbrook. Or take the old RH branch from Wyesahm to Monmouth Station over the ‘bumpy’ bridge and come out at the bottom of Monmouth to pick up Marko’s bit of FP. So many choices… 8)

It’s possible to follow the Wye from source to Severn with a lot of off-road if you’re prepared to climb in and out of the valley and deviate from the actual river along the way. Unfortunately, there are also parts where you will be linking the off-road bits with longish sections of tarmac eg between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye.

The section by the FoD (Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow) can be ridden with a fair old bit of (legal) off-road.

EDIT: Oh, hello BTW and welcome to Singletrack! Redbrook is a great stop-off point, the Boat being a most welcome watering hole 😉 Widge (posted above) and myself are both local to there.

In addition to what ajc says above ref. doors between house and ‘conservatory’, you also need Building Regulations if it is heated by a heating system connected to the house.

Aren’t they in woods so that real MTBers don’t gain any advantage over tri-athletes at 24 hour Events?

Were you on a cx bike? cx bikes have a different geometry to road bikes and shouldn’t really be used on the road.

I’m not sure that I can even see the point that is meant to be being made.

Is it that politicians should not be allowed to support charities? (Or just the politicians you don’t agree with?)

On a new bike I’d have said cable stretch. Check the cable routing too and ensure that it is secure and that the inner moves freely.

Irrespective of my own personal insurance arrangements, I wouldn’t even consider booking a guiding company if they didn’t have insurance.

Rode w2 on Friday and the graveyard has been turned from fast flowy to a slower slog in sections.

I seem to remember “back in the day” when you practically needed trials riding skills to clear the Graveyard, you had to pick a line between or over rocks, trees and narrow causeways to get through it. Was why it was called the Graveyard I believe. Funny how trails change over the years (and bikes I guess) and how peoples’ likes and expectations also change 8)

They say rules are for breaking but then they also say cheating is for cheats.

Could be interesting at signing-on… 😯

At the very least, one of you should wear a dress on every lap; it’s a “fun category after all” although some teams will be racing for the win.

You are indeed correct muckytee. I think a few of the earlier posters have missed the reference to 26″ in the op, 36-19 is hardly a monster gear.

So, what’s the difference between a manual and a wheelie?

    psling

As far as I’m aware you can’t currently ‘race‘ on Public Rights of Way (eg byways and bridleways) in England & Wales so you’d probably be limited to large areas of forestry eg Kielder.

Hiring sounds like a good idea, My local trails would be forest of dean… does anyone know the standard of bikes hired out there?

Give Pedalabikeaway a ring on 01594 860 065 (ask for Jodie or Lingy) and they’ll tell you what’s available in a size to suit, plus hire rates.

When I used to trial and race 4x4s we used to change the wheels according to the course and conditions.
For speed events, we would fit 6.50 tyres (smaller diameter) if the course involved a lot of accelerating but very little top speed and 7.50 tyres (larger diameter) if the course involved longer straights and more top speed.

I would imagine the same principles would apply in MTB XC racing 8)

Ah, so many different names 🙂

Dowies 2. Some people call the later Dowies trail (to the right of the original and joining three parts of the way down) Dowies 2 which we used to call The Skull. And between there and Murdochs was the Bigfoot trail.

Bluebell/whatever is a great trail but a pig in the wet!

I’m wondering which the Bluebell run is?!?

I was ‘dogsitting’ over the weekend; out walking daughter’s labrador over Staunton way on Sunday. 2 or 3 groups out enjoying themselves, trails looked great.

Y2K is the downhill from Worcester Lodge nearest to the Cannop Cross/Broadwell road (some call it the Followthrough)

Timber decking itself isn’t slippery, it’s the build up of algae/slime on it that is slippery. Regularly brushing it down with a stiff bass broom will minimise the chances of it being slippery.

If you don’t mind a more rustic finish and aren’t going to be walking around barefoot then using 50mm x 150mm (or similar) treated sawn carcassing is less expensive and less slippery (a la north shore…).

Larch and pine are both redwood softwoods and will last longer if pressure treated. As tymbian says, larch is generally stronger. If you can get Cedar, that is very durable and British Western Red Cedar will cost much the same as Larch. All timber will bleach to grey in sunlight if not coloured from time to time.

Hardwood boards eg Yellow Balau and non-slip boards generally are 3 to 5 times more expensive than softwood. Hardwood will still get slippery in the same way as moulded softwoods though.

A buzzard is unlikely to spook other birds. My first thought would have been goshawk but possibly a hen harrier; although a winter visitor they’re getting more common.
