Off out looking for bluebells in FoD today, some of the best places have been well ‘rotovated’ by the boar so should be interesting to see how the bluebells fare…

Although vehicles weren’t mentioned in the OP, we mostly relate assaults on cyclists with road rage incidents. However, I’m amazed (and relieved) that aggressive bike theft hasn’t become a major issue yet especially given the value of some bikes and the trade in stolen bikes and parts.

This has no reflection on the OP but a LOT of drivers have no real perception of the speed that cyclists can achieve. I’m sure a lot of them assume cyclists just pootle along and have no idea at all that a fit, regular cyclist can be moving at 20-odd mph and often a lot faster with gradient on their side.

The only way really is to get your weight forward a bit, eg if climbing, shuffle forward on the saddle and drop your shoulder height.

Report Case 1 to police with all details of the car reg. etc. but without independent witnesses I doubt it’ll go any further.

Case 2: the roads are for passage from A to B, not race tracks; concentrate on the traffic around you rather than being faster than everyone else and that way you may avoid road rage incidents… 😉

Thanks oldmanonabike, I’d heard that, how long to get round the full route at a reasonable but not ‘whippet’ pace?

Long route? First riders back 3 hours or so, riders still finishing after 7 or 8 hours. That video is fairly typical of the terrain on the hill tops but doesn’t show the gruelling climbs! There’s some quiet tarmac lanes, pedal grabbing heather, 4×4 tracks, and a lot of sheep-grazed grass. Woodsy singletrack isn’t really a feature; bacon rolls on the long route are though (carry a bit of change with you) 😀

    Nice photo there 🙂

2011 really was horrendous. Managed to complete the short route before they closed it down. Couldn’t believe riders setting out in shorts and shortsleeve tops with no extra kit in the conditions. I think there were over 60 people treated for hypothermia; the villagers at the route split were taking riders in, giving them shelter and feeding them hot tea. Character building stuff! 8)

It’s a marmite event, you’ll either love it or hate it!
As others have said, it’s not a technical ride over rough terrain, it’s a big ride in big country. There’s nowhere to hide either from the weather or the hills. If you get the tyres wrong it can be like riding 70-odd kms on velcro! First finishers are usually on CX bikes, it’s SSable, lightweight full sus probably most comfortable. If you enjoy being ‘out there’ and big views along with a really chilled atmosphere, you’ll like it.

    I like marmite 8)

Lots of ‘big’ ideas above but as I understand it you’re only looking to replace the small 200mm or so lawn edging? Doesn’t follow straight lines by the looks of it. Unless you go down the brick edging route it’ll be hard to beat the log-roll route for what you’re doing and accept that even with pressure treated timber you’ll be lucky to get 10 years out of them. It’ll match the heavier duty stuff behind it too.

If you do use straight timbers, make sure you use a good end-cut treatment on all cut edges.

Personally I don’t think a waterproof membrane will help much; better for the wood to breathe than sweat and the sun probably does the most damage anyway.

Anyone had any info sent out to them yet ? .. seem to remember they used to send numbers out to fix to helmet etc ? …or dont they do that any more ?

You collect sticky number / route map / etc. at registration on the day; just turn up with your Entry confirmation email.

    I believe… 8)

    For Sunday:

Yes, there is a DH event, I think they’re using The Good, The Bad, The Ugly trail which is fairly central behind Pedalabikeaway Centre (and crosses the ‘push up’ route).

There is a road closure on Sunday morning between 08.00 and 10.30 on the B4226 between Speech House and Cannop Crossroads so best to approach from the A4136 Monmouth road between those hours.

The trails are great at the moment, very little mud around.

As said above, within the four roads bounding the area behind Pedalabikeaway there is a lot of good riding. Beyond those roads there is even more great riding but you really need a guide to find the best of it.

EDIT: Oh, and the parking charge at Pedalabikeaway contributes towards the MTB facilities in FoD 8)

I’m reading it, that the OP gave them permission to make the purchase on his account. They would argue that they had an honest held belief that the permission given to them extended to the handles, locks etc.

That seems to sum up my understanding of it nicely except it needs to be added that the op’s customer is refusing to pay for the subsequently collected handles, locks etc.

    EDIT: as hels says 🙂

Have you checked that the campsite is open in the current conditions..?

26″ or 29″ wheels? 42:20 is quite low for road use, 44:28 even lower and likely to be very spinny. I’d go the other way, perhaps 44 (if that’s what he’s got):18.
    (Depending on wheel size…)

Its for a customer who wants to decomission a gas pipeline that comes on shore. We’re looking into options and one is to look at the cost and complexity of digging a massive trench around it to take it out.

Is another option to isolate it and seal it off leaving it in-situ? Would probably be a lot less hassle 🙂

Adam and his father have done/do a lot of good work in livestock circles and their Cotswold Wildlife Park is a great day out for the family.

Given his high profile I bet vehicle and machinery companies are throwing their wares at him to get product placement.

I don’t want go leave, I like my job and my company I’d just like to earn a few more £££!

You know what your current salary package is and you must have a pretty good idea of the company’s current trading/financial position and order book/projections for the coming year.

How much more do you want and are they in a position to offer more? Arm yourself with why you think you’re worth ‘x’ amount more and ask. Salaries elsewhere are only really relevant as a bargaining tool if you’ve been offered a job elsewhere.

I’m going to be unashamedly unPC now and mention that I caught about 5 minutes of the programme last week when there was a group of absolutely gorgeous young ladies singing in an Irish choral group. Stunning. Didn’t notice who the presenter was though, sorry 😉

I quite enjoy it (in an acknowledging that it’s made for Sunday evening TV kind of way).
Matt is from Durham hill-farming stock and Adam is a hands-on Cotswolds gentleman farmer so they’re not exactly townies themselves and I enjoy seeing the different areas they visit. And, the weather forecast is pretty useful.
All in all, a good way to wind down at the end of the weekend 8)

It’s a tricky one. I own a car where I’m not the Registered Keeper; being the registered keeper doesn’t prove ownership although it’s generally accepted as such.

You only seem to have one concern and that is if he can legally sell it. The only way you’ll know this is if he can come up with a foolproof receipt of purchase [easily forged] or if you can confirm it with the name on the Registration Doc.. If the seller is legit, then I’m sure he’d have no problem in passing this information on to you so that you can confirm the deal is all above board with the named registered keeper.

Yeah, quite wet at the moment. We haven’t had a lot of rain really over the last week but the ground just isn’t draining anymore like it used to, it’s that saturated 🙁 I rode today but not around pedalabikeaway or dowies, but ground was pretty wet over Bracelands/Symonds Yat way. Shut my eyes and hope for the best on the downhill bits!

It has been dry today after a heavy frost, forecast for tomorrow and Tuesday is mostly dry. The unsurfaced trails are very greasy though at the moment; the surfaced trails (inc Verderers) should be fine. Good set of mud biased tyres will get you through most stuff here if you’re going ‘for a bit of an explore’ 8)
