Would be interesting to hear the story behind it!

I think the one who ended up in the water had just jumped a red light…

Don’t forget the blasphemy.

Have to admit, that did make me chuckle

Jesus, i bet they both have vaginas.

Blimey, isn’t that rather discriminatory against women? 8O

But red light = stop and wait for green one, it really is that simple.

The cyclist broke the law.
Now, whether you choose to be selective about which laws you obey and which you ignore for whatever reason, whether through ignorance or by choice, is entirely up to you but if you get caught then all the arguing and reasoning in the world doesn’t change the fact that you broke the law and may have to suffer the consequences.

Had a quick flick through my copy last night, looking good.

The featured ride is on my doorstep; it’s amazing how you look at it and think how differently you’d have done it yourself but then I also noticed that some of the written article doesn’t seem to relate to the route on the map :? All good fun though 8)

I don’t really worry if people are concerned that I’ve got “all the gear but no idea” because I know that I’m significantly wealthier than them and significantly more successful than them so it doesn’t really matter.
I know this because if they were my equal it wouldn’t actually be a problem 8)

Would make the scenario even more interesting if the dealer already has a buyer for it (which is maybe why they offered over the odds and requested the V5)… 8O

I think simonDbarnes used to regularly ride a big commute, something in the region of 70kms each way if my memory serves me correctly. He occasionally posts so may be along soon with some advice.

Whilst on the subjest, what’s the deal with “VAG” owners, why the need to put that instead of VW skoda audi etc? is this an accepted (in the rest of the world – not just here) convention I’m unaware of

Could be because that’s the actual name of the Group that owns those Brands and is used worldwide? Plus, it’s a lot quicker to type…

Not me. I don’t live in Calderdale, I don’t have a beard, I don’t have a coffee machine, I don’t drive a VAG vehicle, I do have an Orange but it’s a 10 year old P7, and… sod the woodpile, I work in a sawmill 8)

What type of bike (eg MTB, CX, road)? What surfaces is your commute on (eg tarmac, tow path, cycle trail, off road)?

Pop in and see Charlie the Bikemonger in Swanage; he certainly showed us around some excellent trails in that area earlier this year 8)

I remember the days when most STWers owned IFs, now they don’t even get a mention

I have a couple of DEANs too, more niche than a niche thing in a forum full of niche things, eh? 8)

I was there a couple of weeks ago, also in fair weather. It’s a great area if you like big ‘out-there’ rides.
Mind you, given that the water from the reservoirs falls all the way to Birmingham by gravity I can never understand why there are some nasty little *##*!@# uphills between the Visitor Centre and Rhayader which just hurt mentally and physically when all you want to do is freewheel into town after a big day in the hills

I had a lad overtake me on Saturday. Me on road bike, him on mtb with fag hanging out of his mouth! Red rag to a bull, I took him near the top of the next hill and promptly skidded, both wheels locked, into the back of a car that had stopped to let oncoming traffic pass a row of parked cars (luckily stopping as I made contact, driver didn’t even notice). He meanwhile dropped off laughing along a pedestrianised street to re-appear well in front of me a few minutes later 8)

Aaarh Jim lass, when I were a lad in the 60s, we rode the same trails that we ride now on mtbs on dropbar bikes with 52/48 front chainrings and the rear 13/21, and our widest tyre was 38mm.

And,interestingly [yawn…] we did it on what are now referred to as the new-fangled 650 wheelsize!

Everyone’s perception of being a good driver is different. Northwind mentions having 100,000 miles under his belt as an indication of experience; to some drivers that’s 2 or 3 years driving! The one thing I notice as I get older is that I drive more slowly, read potential dangers better and drive accordingly. To a lot of younger drivers that makes me a bad driver because I’m holding them up; their reactions are quicker and they’re invincible. Me, I’ve been to too many funerals. A lot of drivers believe good car handling skills make you a good driver. On the track maybe but not on the road, it requires a whole lot more to drive safely on the road.
Another thing I’ve noticed over the years is the plethora of road signs advising/instructing what to do next. People don’t have to read the road any more, it’s like driving by numbers! And, when something goes wrong it’s always someone elses’ fault!
I often cringe and give myself a good talking to at some of the stupid things I still do though. Maybe that’s the problem, even when we learn by ours and others mistakes, we’re too stupid to remember what we’ve learnt and still (occasionally!) drive like a muppet.

Maybe something like a bit of sawn 4 x 2 (100 x 50) wedged in at as shallow an angle as possible; just that little bit wider and a flatter surface.

I’ve always got on well with Conti Twisters for mix of tarmac/fireroad/singletrack. Currently on last legs of 37-622 set, looking to replace with same. Used for commuting / fun, not cx racing so don’t know how they’d perform on the cx race track 8)

56 here, regularly riding 3 HTs (2 of which SS, 1 rigid). Like to keep the wheels on the ground these days though they do occasionally get air (as proven by the cracked rib I suffered earlier this year  ).

I’ve not long finished reading (over a period of time) the Peter May Lewis Trilogy The Black House / The Lewis Man / The Chessmen. Easy reading but he really immerses you into the landscape of the Outer Hebrides with his writing.

I’ve been using a Light & Motion Vis180 for the last couple of years on a dark rural roads commute. Not cheap but very effective. Can be seen from a good distance and the side flashing encourages drivers to pass wide.
Not so sure it would be worth the money for an urban commute though. Ankle reflectors, reflective clothing and a mix of fixed and flashing rear lights probably best in town.
