Interesting that the big live double albums all seem to be from an earlier era; it’s almost as if with the advent of stadium venues the gigs have got smaller! Or is it down to the fact that you can get more onto a CD than you can on a single piece of vinyl?

Yes, some people relate dependancy with excess but even having just one or two to have a good time leads to depending on having that one or two to have that good time. Or, having a glass or two to relax at home; you’re actually depending on that glass or two to relax. Dependancy is not dependant on excess.

My guess is that you’re asking about this year’s event now..?

The “guidelines” are given as an indication of what may be a “safe” level of alchohol intake. They are not really relevant to the OP who is asking “why” people drink; why drink a couple of glasses of wine? why get hammered at the weekend? Irrespective of any guidelines, why do we require alchohol to “have a good time”.
Before I had to give up alchohol I’d never have used all those “quotation marks”

I was going to say Cream, Disraeli Gears but that’s one album live/ one album studio so doesn’t count (good shout on Allman Brothers above though).
I have Alchemy and Babylon by Bus in my vinyl collection and I’ll raise you by The Who, Live at Leeds 8)

As wobbliscott says, the Somerset Levels are a different situation to most river flooding. They are, historically, marshlands that have been reclaimed centuries ago with man-made rivers to manage them. The flooding isn’t due to rivers/water channels over-spilling their banks (as in natural rivers spilling into their flood plains) but because the rivers/water channels cannot cope with the excess rainwater falling onto the land being sluiced and pumped into them. Hence the argument that stopping dredging (effectively reducing the capacity of the rivers/channels) means that water stands for longer on the adjacent land. The locals accept that there will be flooding because of the nature of the area but usually flood water can be dispersed into the rivers/channels within a day or two. Since dredging stopped, the water stands for much longer and, in this instance, for several weeks.

The flooding being experienced elsewhere is for many and various reasons, mostly man made :(

Unbelievable! So, the ASA are effectively overuling the law. I wonder why 5 people complained in the first place and what their real reasons were?

Probably need to get it booked soon especially for a Sunday, they get pretty busy. I’m working all Saturdays through Feb unfortunately and you’ll not want me mincing around on the DH trails with you. Could always buy you a pint on the Sat night though :D

Since you mention a certain ex football player there, he would have been very upset if he had known what a girlfriend of his was up to with a very good friend of mine many years ago 8O

It’s a good service Stu and you’ll get a lot of runs in. When you thinking of doing it? I’ll give you a state of the trails update at the time. Worth having a ride of the Freeminers if you’re riding at pedalabikeaway, there’s even some ‘shore being built! 8)

(sorry empireofthefun, I should have put a winky smiley earlier; I was taking the michael out of Stu  )

There was an event there last Sunday and seems to have held up well in the wet. The trails are tough though and you need good skills to get the best out of them so if you’re a bit nervous or a newbie you may struggle in the conditions.

Definitely worth doing some research, for example I believe there is only a small window of time each month when conception can actually take place and various other factors can influence the chances of conception. With regards age, my father was 50, my mother 42 when I was born and I have a sister two years younger than me! That was back in the 1950s too! So, your ages shouldn’t be too much of a problem 8)

Ah yes evoke childhood memories of Dads cars etc.

Not one owned by us but I always smile if I see a Datsun 120Y or Toyota Crown

Have had both of those ‘back in the day’ Hora! The older Crown with the lights around the corners on the front, incredibly futuristic car in its day with regards to standard equipment spec.

My favourite ‘classic’ that I’ve owned were a Volvo P1800S and a MGA fixed head (not twin cam unfortunately). And several 50’s Series I Land Rovers which were amazing fun 8)

Having said that, some of those vehicles weren’t actually that old when I owned them

I think 250 notes is a lot for what OP has had done, mind you if that is the rate it is what it is.

Blimey, 25% increase in 1 day! That’s inflation for you 8O

When you consider the retail price of a lot of bike components these days, especially things like suspension forks, I’m not surprised that servicing/repair costs have increased accordingly. Not necessarily just because the net cost of components has increased that much but also because the perceived value of the industry has increased so dramatically over the last few years as cycling has become ‘fashionable’.

As widge says, pressure treatment is protection against rot and infestation, it is not a waterproofer (my guess with regard to the deck mentioned above is that the treatment was compromised by cutting and/or fixings).

Pressure treated wood will fade to grey in time so further applications of treatment will maintain some colour; a treatment that offers a uv protection is useful.

The cladding on sheds will either be tongued & grooved or lapped; rain can drive through gaps between boards and through knot holes. If you want 100% waterproof, you’ll probably need to line the shed with a dpm (damp proof membrane) of some sort. HTH 8)

Mountain Hardwear Effusion – beautifully light, waterproof, breathable and packable though may not be hardwearing enough for roughty-toughty mtb’ing. Having said that, I’ve got a Gore jacket and a Gore smock that I’ve had for years (10+) that have given me great service 8)

I used to enjoy the ‘Fish out of Water’ articles that used to appear in the mag a few years back, after all, I actually have interests in activities beyond mountain biking.
Oh, and the “Mountain Bike Magazine” tag was dropped about two years ago now! 8O

Keep an eye on your local newspaper classifieds or local online bargain type sites – regularly see job lots of kit either people moving on from tenting to caravanning or those that have bought all the kit but not used it. By job lot we’re talking stove, kitchen unit, air beds, table, chairs, all sorts.

Edit: and whilst cougar is right(ish), a lot of the bargains to be had are from people who have spent big on all the kit and then found it’s not really for them

If you don’t want to get caught up BEHIND (yes, somehow these incompetents have got in front of you!) then don’t enter mass start events. Or get into training so that you’re quickest to the first big climb

But agree, if you have to walk up the subsequent hills then keep a riding line free for those who can actually ride them.

Hi Stu, you doing it this year?

Combine the Kennet & Avon canal with the Ridgeway for an out and back loop, plenty of history in the area and B+B shouldn’t be an issue 8)

Sorted some old magazines out over xmas and there is a write-up in the Feb 2011 Dirt magazine of the first Monduro night stages enduro. As Trusty says above 5 months ago, more of a mates race series than a commercial event. Some top entrants though :-)

Great fun so good luck to you Scottfitz if you run some similar events.

Hoping it’s a good one too. I guess there’s only so far you can take a political drama like Borgen compared to a crime drama like The Killing and the first The Bridge seemed to combine both genres if I remember rightly, so should be scope to keep it fresh.

I’m a bit out of touch with all these super-efficient modern vehicles; I reckon on about 32mpg average in my 2002 Toyota Hi-Ace van.
Rather than costing mpg I calculate my running costs at 39p/mile based on 8000 miles/year (excluding depreciation and not having any finance costs).

I’m a bit like B.A.Nana, have used Trangias and various others with various fuels but prefer my propane mix fuelled spider/hose type stove; low, stable, convenient. Convenient and easy to use seem to be my priorities; no cut down coke cans with holes in for me. Always use my Trangia kettle though!

Having said that, most of my lightweight camping has been for max. 3 or 4 nights and generally not in sub 5’C temperatures.

never having seen a tour stage live I do believe its not just the riders flashing past. there is also the caravan in front. and at he rear .

It’s not a great deal more. Several police and marshal outriders precede several sponsors/team/officials cars precede (maybe) a break-away then the peleton and then a few more sponsors/team cars. If you get by a KoM or a Sprint finish there is more likelihood of sponsors handouts. Most time spent getting into position and waiting is best spent mixing with other spectators; sharing some banter and having a laugh.

If you want more out of it get to a start or finish town, there will be loads going on and it’ll be a lot more involving for a much longer time. And, a lot more crowded!

Everyone needs to just slow the **** down and chill out. Take your time. Life’s short – but it’s not that short.

My father used to say to me when I first started driving “it’s better to be later than late”. Took me a while to understand what he meant.

Anyway Hora, another lesson learnt from the university of experiences, eh?!

All these systems (UBI, Communism, Capitalism, whateverism) break down as soon as you introduce homo-sapiens into the melting pot. Gross negative generalisation I know but it is why you can never please all of the people all of the time. (Most) people always want more in ‘Western Civilisation’. Still, such schemes should never be discounted out of hand without consideration.

Maybe you could provide a better source of statistics then. The TUC have nothing to directly gain on this issue other than exposing a big political lie making a political point.

    FTFY

As shermer says, statistics can be interpreted to suit anyones politics.

And cassettes! At least I have a deck, I don’t even have a casette player these days.

Know what you mean about de-cluttering, but it’s not easy and I’ve regretted being ruthless in the past.
