I’ve owned bb7, cx77, spyres, hy/rd and now rs685. The rs685 are so much better than all the others in feel and set up. I think the sti lever are designed to pull caliper brakes, I’m sure someone will tell me I’m wrong.
If it was me I’d buy 105 groupset and rs685 levers/brakes.
I much prefer my pickenflick to my tripster – if you prefer a tall front end maybe the tripster would suit you better. It also depends on the use for the bike, mudguards/racks etc
I thought this was only on the first frame, the new ones are ok to run normal compact chainset? I have the original (running 1×11) and the new one coming next week with cx1
I ahve both the old version of the Pickenflick and a Tripster – I much prefer the geometry of the Pickenflick, the front of the tripster just feels to high even with no spacers and flipped stem. Not sure on ride quality as my tripster is set up for the road (28mm tubeless) and the pickenflick is mixed with 35mm clements.
I guess it depends what you prefer but the complete pickenflick looks great value at £1600
It’s fine to run tubeless tyres on non tubeless rims, well it as been for me on two pairs of wheels with archetype rims, just used 2 wraps of tape and went up easily. I think the big issue is using normal tyres tubeless.
I’m running it on a pickenflick with a raceface thick/thin front chainring. No idea about the spring though, mines not for racing but had some severe bouncing on some rough tracks, etc and not lost the chain yet.
Lightbicycle 23mm wide 45mm deep U rims from china built onto novatec rims – just wanted some carbon rims, not sure if they are any better than my archetypes
Pretty sure they will with, the description on the box is “Truvative AM Howitzer Team MM 66 chainline 100mm” I bought it to use on my pugsley with a middleburn ISIS chainset but obviously weren’t compatible.
I think I paid £50 so not willing to sell for £20 when it will probably cost £5 to post.
I’m currently building one up but it will be standard 34/50 11-25, however I’ve just built a planet X Pickenflick up similar to what you intend to do.
I don’t think the gearing you describe would work very well on the road, mine is a shimano 6800 11 speed with a 11-32 rear cassette and a race face thick/thin 42t on the front. This works well on everything road/bridleway etc in flat cheshire, however if you have any ‘proper’ hills a 38 or 40 would work better.
I also built it up with a bar end shifter (and v brake levers) as I don’t think the short throw of the sti brake levers work very well with cable pull disc brakes (spyres). There is a lot of lever movement before the brakes bite properly. I’ll be trying hy/rd on the tripster
Ive just bought a frameset and will have 2 sets of wheels :-
– Archetypes on shimano cx75 centre lock hubs bought off here.
– chinese carbon rims built onto novatec hubs probably running tubeless
schwable ones if i can get them on the bloody rim!
I’ve had 2 and loved the look and versatility of them but found them very sluggish compared to my cross check. I assume this was due to the geometry set up for taking loads during touring?
i’ve some old non ergo (not sure which model) which i used on my bob jackson fixed gear bike you can have for £20? drop me a e-mail if you are interested
I have Phil woods hub built onto mavic open pro rim for sale, brilliant hub and tried and tested rim. Screw on freewheel (White industries if you can afford it)
I dont use the archetype rim but I use the A23 rims which are the same width as the H plus rims and the extra width improved the comfort no end over the open pro rims. Not sure on the width of the ultegra rims?
