I know the advice is to get sized up at a shop but what sort of size should I be looking at? I’m 6’2″ and usually ride 19/20″ MTB’s. Got a nasty feeling I need a 60cm which is out of stock.

I’m 5 foot 10 and a bit and have got a 56cm one, picked it up on Thursday – size seems perfect at the moment

Does it have proper rack mounts and how is the tyre clearance? Could it take much larger tyres?

Also, what about the pink decals? Can they be removed easily?

Only one set of mounts at the drop-outs and none on the seat-stays, so probably not the easiest to fit a rack to.

Apparently, from a google search before I bought it, they can take 28c tyres but not with mudguards (see my above comments about mudguard clearance anyway).

Decals, no idea and no intention of trying to peel them off. IMO they’re not a loud pink and complement the rest of the colour-scheme.

The last one I had got gummed up by small amounts of tubeless sealant that spat out of the valve when checking or adjusting the pressures – are they now more robust or is that still an issue?

What was tricky about fitting the Axiom guards?

The brake caliper at the rear means that you can only use 1 stay on that side and you have to put multiple bends in that one.

Plus there’s very little clearance at the chain-stay bridge for the bolt that holds the guard on, I had to file the head down considerably – it’s only really an issue when taking the wheel on or off, as the clearance increases once the wheel’s in the drop-outs properly.

Lastly the mounting bolts aren’t long enough to go through two stays and into either the fork or the frame – luckily I had some slightly longer screws of the same size and they did the trick.

But now that they’re on, they seem pretty secure and I’m quite looking forward to seeing how dry they keep me when I ride in the wet

Well, after a frustrating 4 hours fitting the mudguards – BTW Axiom Roadrunner LX’s are a bitch to fit to this bike – I’ve just come back from a 5 mile spin around the block.

Other than needing to raise the saddle by about 1/2″, there’s nothing that I need to do to it – Winstanley’s have set it up well, the indexing’s spot on and I’m very impressed with the brakes – just needing a light squeeze from on the hoods to slow for junctions etc.

So as a first road bike for many years, I’m impressed – the value seems great and the service from Winstanleys was spot on :D

Just over 5ft 10″ and it seems to fit right – a quick spin around the car park and it felt good, plus the blokey who served me said that it looked right too.

As I’m such a road bike novice, that’ll do for me.

Very impressed so far, seems very light (compared to my mountain bikes) and well built and was set-up well by Winstanleys. Bought some mudguards whilst I was there, so going to fit those this evening and go out for my first spin into the darkside.

As above – Just buy them T-shirts or buy them some sharpies

In time-honoured STW fashion, I won’t answer your question but I’ll tell you what I’ve got….

After many failed inkjet printers because they pack up if you don’t use them everyday, I got a Dell C1765nfw LED printer (home version of a laser) and it’s worked faultlessly for the last 2 years.

Shh v666ern! I don’t want ’em selling out while I pontificate over sizing!

I thought that too – but they’re building up a 56cm for me to try at lunchtime. My first foray into roadbikes since I was 14, brought about by my p!ss-wet through “getting the miles in” ride last night on the MTB…

As at this morning they had 18 in stock in 56cm size.

I’ve fitted an MRP AMG v2 to my new Reign, works great – just have a problem wondering how they can justify £95…..

@Bounce – sorry, didn’t even look for hire bikes as we had our own with us. Didn’t even need to visit an LBS for spares as none of us (apart from the serial bike breaker, who’d taken quite a few spares with him) broke anything – so no chance to look then.

Getonyourbike has more knowledge, so go with his advice :D

As with most areas it varies, but they don’t hold an EWS round there every year for no reason.

Some sections of the trails were smooth enough for a rigid but then you’d come hareing around a corner right into/onto a massive rock garden with some substantial step-downs.

Wouldn’t see the point in going there on a rigid as (IMHO) it would spoil some of the fun, but you may well be massively more skilled than this mincer and may find it fine :-)

Hi Prouster… Do you mind me asking which company did the guiding.? I’m considering a weekend there myself… Went to The Alps last year.

Sorry for the delay, been busy!!

We went with Just Ride Finale, nice bunch of people and great guides – Gabby is the fastest person on a bike that I’ve ever ridden with, and soooo smooth. Gave a few of us bits of coaching as well as the guiding and she knows her onions there too.

    Pah, reviews!

I bought an end-of-line 2015 Reign Advanced just before Xmas because:

    1. I loved my old (2013) Reign, still got it but need to get around to selling it….
    2. It was a bargain.
    3. I wanted (and had been told, by a guide in Finale Ligure that my bike was too small for me) to try a longer bike. I went from Medium on the old to a Large in the new – that is a big step-up for a 5’11” shorty, but the new one feels great and is much, much faster than I am.

Go for it, great bikes :D

You’re welcome to join us for a long weekend in Finale Ligure matey! 3 days uplifted and 1 day pedalling.

We went last year and this year a couple of the guys are foregoing Megavalanche passes from their other halves because they thought it was so good, other members of the party had been to the French Alps for years and thought it was the best riding they’d ever done.

All guided by some of the fastest and smoothest riders I’ve ever seen, let alone ridden with.

Getting ranted at by an old lady walker in the Goyt Valley…..

“There’s just too many of you” was her main rant – despite me being outnumbered by at least 100:1 (I was the only bike I saw) on my ride. She didn’t want to discuss, she just wanted to rant, so after trying to engage her for the 4th time, I smiled at her and cycled away.

Didn’t spoil my day, had a great laugh slipping, sliding and splashing away :D

I’ve always found that the best way to seal a difficult tyre is to go for a proper ride on it. The constant agitation and deformation that the tyre sees over rocks, roots etc. always does the trick for me.

So the only one I’ve entered, No. 3, is now looking dodgy at both Lee Quarry (see other thread) and Cockhill…

    Oh well

Lee Quarry / cockhill has been the favorite last few years – will cockhill be included this time with their current predicament??

    What’s this “predicament”?

I hope it’s included because those 2 stages at Cockhill were my favourite of the whole year…

Just had my first ride on my new (2015 but only bought last week) Advanced 1. Have gone from a medium 2013 Reign to a large.

My god it loves to go fast but feels incredibly stable doing it – and I didn’t notice any turning issues either.

Pretty sure that I’m going to take the spacers out from underneath the stem as it feels a little high at the front, plus I feel it’ll help me to put a it more weight on the front that the longer reach is hindering.

But, first ride = bloody happy, a solid 8 out of 10 :D

No. 209 – distilled in San Francisco.

Tried it at a gin-tasting earlier this year and of the 10 or so that I tried, it was the best. Beautifully citrus and floral, so much so that I could sip it neat.

Finally managed to track a bottle down on Wednesday

This is all you need, even includes Enduro in the name!!

    Clicky

I’ve had a couple of crashes and the mount insert breaks, not the lugs on the Garmin. You can buy spare inserts and, if you crash regularly, it’s a good idea to do that when you order the mount as it spreads the P&P cost.

Can I bring my 24″ cruiser or do you have to use the hire bikes?

BTW owning the above is no indication of ability, I’ve only had it for a couple of months and have only managed 1 trip to Bruntwood BMX track so far (plus a few spins to the shops)

Don’t be deceived by the lack of rain for the off trail sections, im guessing it will be very muddy after they have been riden in practice. Maybe not quite as bad as last time.

My thoughts entirely, that’s why I fitted the Maxxis Shorty to the front last night – I think it’ll be worth it just for those two stages through the loam/mud/slop.

I’m in, last race of the season for me. Looking forward to it, really enjoyed the first one of the season – now just have the internal debate about whether to fit the Shorty onto the front……

How many other Grand Vets will be there?
