Shorty 2.5 maxxterra 3c up front in winter, DHR2 2.3 maxxterra 3c DD rear all year round riding mainly off piste stuff. I find the shorty decent enough on wet/damp trailcentre hardpack, obvs not as good as the maxxgrip dhf 2.5 I use in the summer, but its far better in the slop

It’s quite obviously because everyone currently has some other size, so if we change it then everyone will buy shit loads more stuff.

The first 2 gates Rude missed probably didn’t save much time but as stated he took a line with more grip by doing so, he also cut a 3rd gate after the corner on the vid which would have saved a good few seconds. I initially said a time penalty for each missed gate would be a fair sanction but in hindsight the dq was justified, his teammates both managed to work out where the course was

Crank Brothers mallet dh, personally using shimano me7 shoes at the minute but I’ve used am9’s for years before them with no complaints. They do require more maintenance than Shimano pedals but its not hard to service them, and the only other downside to Crank Brothers are the brass cleats which wear out a lot faster than steel ones used by most other brands

Out of five petrol stations I passed. 3 were empty. 1 only had petrol (I need diesel) and 1 had gridlocked half the town as people had seen that there was a tanker their and had decided to park on both sides of the main drag to get in

Can I ask in what part of Britain this is? I’ve just been out and filled the tank on my van (as I always do) at the 1st petrol station I came to, no queues at all. A couple of lads from work went out last night and did the same, no queues, all pumps working and no one filling jerry cans, plastic bottles or anything other than their cars. North East England here and, whilst I haven’t been driving much over the weekend I haven’t seen a queue at a petrol station so far. I haven’t read much of this thread but from 3 or 4 stations in the South East running out last week there’s been little else on TV and in newspapers for days now, completely blown out of proportion by sensationalist reporting in the media, combined with the social media element (people straight on Facebook when they see a tanker delivering fuel) has caused this problem to be far worse than it needed to be.
Brexit, covid, driver pay and conditions are all part of a problem which definitely needs addressing and if anyone seriously thinks temporary visas for EU drivers will sort this out they need a reality check

I had similar last year, tried new pressfit bb, chain, changed all frame bearings with no success, eventually found a tiny crack on the mech hanger/axle threads which was the source of the creaking, sorted with new hanger but I was 110% convinced it was coming from the bb/cranks at first

Religeon is medival superstition used as an instrument to control people

Always has been and anyone who base’s their outlook on life through any religion in the 21st century should be considered mentally ill

Search for George Carlin on YouTube, he absolutely nails it with his views on religion

Uninstall the app from your phone then reinstall it and it should unlock for another 7 days, a mate told me about this little trick a while ago but don’t know if it still works

A lad I know was quoted over £600 extra to ad a Giant reign advanced to his home and contents insurance a couple of years ago, bike was kept locked to the wall in a detached garage, so he told them to forget it and he’d look at other options. The insurance company rang back later that day and said they were going to cancel his policy if he didn’t pay for the extra cover as his bike was a draw to potential thieves and in their opinion greatly increased the risk of his house being broken into, afaik he didn’t pay and cancelled the policy himself

Bottom line: if either the motor or the battery dies out of warranty, you’re left with either a substantial bill or a near useless heap of parts.

I’ll probably end up getting one when I get too old and broken to ride a normal mtb but the above is the main reason I haven’t bought one so far. I’ve not even tried riding one and being fairly skinny and weighing less than 11 stone I don’t think it would be much fun on the type of trails I like riding, no sense in making the climbing easier but the tight steep twisty descents more difficult and tiring

Fairly sure they are supplied with a cover so it can be used without the battery as a standard mtb, and actually in stock unless you’re after a large

I used a Garmin gps and the android phone app simultaneously years ago when the Garmin wasn’t uploading rides to Strava for some reason. This was on mtb rides with loads of shorter segments, most of which were under tree cover so I wasn’t expecting a perfect match on times. It wasn’t consistently faster on one device either, sometimes the app would be over 30 seconds faster on segments that took under 2 minutes, other times the Garmin would be by the same margins and to top it off I got a KOM up a short but steep climb that I didn’t actually ride up. Not sure if the multiple signals were confusing each other as I’ve had similar issues riding in large groups (starting together and finishing way ahead of people but ending up with a slower segment time)but I stopped caring after the KOM. It’s not accurate enough to worry about while using in the woods, I’d expect it to be better out in the open over 10km though. I still use it but mainly to help find new places to ride

Stinky Pinky is bizarre. It doesn’t link into anything afterwards without a roll down the fireroad to Walk or Burn or a sprint up to the corner to 2nd Base

Stinky Pinky then up the fireroad into 2nd Base struck me as a potential ews stage last time up there although, as already stated, Stinky Pinky isn’t really EWS grade stuff. Another one that I thought possible was Big Baw into Aussie Rules then up the fireroad to finish on Walk or Burn. I’ve not been down Aussie Rules for a long time and don’t have any idea what state its in these days so just guessing

Is this the future of MTB’ing?

More likely to be the demise of mtbing as we know it. A lad I know recently had an electric motor bolted onto an old halfords hardtail, no need to pedal and completely unrestricted, and decided to join a few of us for a ride. He assured us he would have no problems keeping up as he’d watched a few go pro vids a mate had put on Instagram. After around 10 mins we decided to put him to the test on some of the steeper trails in the local, which he’d previously told us looked a doddle and would be no problem for a man of his skill level. He hasn’t been back out with us and can’t work out why he hasn’t lost any weight since he got back into ‘mountain biking’. People are going to start having/causing serious accidents on these bikes and eventually I can see landowners restricting or denying access to well established trails due to the same idiots putting claims in when they end up spannered

How does the course compare to ardRock in terms of difficulty?

I talked a couple of lads into entering the last NN, they’d both completed ard rock several times and expected similar, they both bailed after 5 stages on the practice day and didn’t start the race

I just run ebay specials, work same as the OEM and if they get knackered it’s only a fiver

Fitted some cheap cnc’d aluminium ones I bought on ebay a few years ago, one of them bent and jammed while going uphill on the first ride, miles away from the van. Lesson learnt. I’ve got Hope’s on one bike and Shimano plastic ones on the other, no noticable difference other than price

    @blis who are “they”?

The answer to this ^^^^^ should clear this up. I’ve heard ‘they’ used a lot in similar conversations lately, I’m yet to find out who ‘they’ actually are and how anyone with these beliefs found out themselves, and don’t even think about using the ‘do your own research’ answer I’ve heard every time I ask who ‘they’ are

deserve no sympathy if and when they end up ill

    But…They still deserve treatment.

Treatment? Yes but not given priority over other potentially life threatening conditions. Anyone who has refused a vaccine for non medical reasons and ends up ill after the last 18 months makes me think of a cancer patient who refuses to give up smoking, then still expects to be at the front of the queue for treatment

Can’t wait, if its wet it will be absolute carnage, expect steep, rocky rooty and the transitions are a bit of a slog. I don’t usually race but I’ve done all of the Naughty Northumbrians, although mainly because of the fact it’s out of bounds outside of the race

its going to end up being part of your ability to get a job i think

There’s 1 lad at work, already had covid, who is refusing to get a vaccine, despite being a regular MDMA user, on safety grounds. The MD (74 yrs old, no intention of retiring) had words with him for the 2nd time last week, his response was that he ‘can’t make me get it’ and was told by the factory foreman that ‘yes, he can’t make you get it, but he can make you unemployed’.

I understand why we can’t deny them hospital beds

A LOT of people with non covid related conditions HAVE been denied hospital beds since this pandemic began last year, people who may now have missed vital months of treatments and end up in a much worse state than if the NHS hadn’t been overrun with covid patients. People reusing a vaccine and potentially extending this situation through ignorance/stupidity deserve no sympathy if and when they end up ill

    couple of grassy fillers

No grass stages in 2019, I heard a few people saying they thought the rocky/scree/loose rubble stage was the scariest thing they’d ever tried to ride, anywhere

    pothead

I haven’t done Graythwaite but I’ve done all of the Naughty Northumbrians, stages are on the whole very technical, steep, rooty, rocky and transitions were brutal in the 30° heat last time. I’ve talked 3 different lads into entering and all of them bailed after the practice day saying it was too hard/technical, as I believe around 250 others did last time. I don’t race much at all but if there’s one race a year I’d make a point of entering its the Naughty, can’t f***** wait. Theres a couple of vids on YouTube from last time, although it really doesn’t do justice to how steep some of the stages actually are

needed to hold the knurled ring firmly with pliers and unscrew the base.

I vaguely remember using a 3 or 4mm hex key on the base to tighten the 2 parts together when fitting the valves, worth remembering as the correct size on my multi-tool was too short to reach into the bottom of the rim bed when I managed to destroy the E Thirteen tyre (thumbnail sized hole that wouldn’t seal) on the rear wheel and couldn’t remove the valve to fit a tube. I made sure 2 put a suitable one in the pack after that disaster

I’ve been using them for a couple of years now, found them pretty simple to install and as far as I remember unscrewed easily by hand, sorry but I can’t really say anything more helpful than that to be honest

Used that exact combo for years until recently changing to Shimano ME7 shoes. I found they work spot on, clipped or unclipped you can feel the platform, the trick is getting the pins set up, too high and its a pain to unclip, too low and there’s a noticable lack of grip when riding unclipped, just takes a few rides to get it perfect. The me7’s, which I now prefer, have a much stiffer sole and you can’t ‘feel the platform as much but to me they feel more stable when riding. Pretty sure I used the shim that comes with Mallet dh pedals, only downside being the brass cleats that wear out a LOT faster than spd cleats

land owner’s losing his shit, and there are wire fences going up left and right…

This would be the main reason to not to publicise other people’s hard graft, pick up a spade if you really want to ride ‘secret trails’. Had a lad pestering me recently to show him the trails used in the Naughty Northumbrian, instead of actually entering the race like I and several mutual friends have done, I won’t be showing him

@pothead – this off piste descent from Whinlatter, is it easy to find?

I know of 2, both are a few trails linked together, 1 starts on the north loop and 1 on the south and has a climb in the middle on a footpath from near the blue loop, pretty sure both can be found on trailforks
In hindsight, while both are worth searching out, they aren’t actually close to the Skiddaw/Ullock Pike descent

    pothead
    Free Member

I propose Ullock Pike. Will anyone second me?

If the scree from the top of Skiddaw is included then its a yes from me. First time I did it was a couple of years ago, 30° heat and hungover, swore I’d never do it again halfway up the bridleway from Latrigg car park after almost throwing up. It didn’t take too long to change my thinking on the descent, although the following 20 mile loop around Bassenthwaite, up to Whinlatter and back down the off piste descent to the valley floor, whilst almost as good, almost finished me off
