Not really much of a photographer, hopefully better to come, but thanks to all who gave advice choosing a camera a couple of weeks ago. Very happy!

Try reading Private Eye without getting angry – the failures of PFI seem to be highlighted more or less every issue.

I managed to find some software online that lets you bypass the ‘your ink is too low so I wont let you print’ message.

Bloody printer wouldn’t let me print black and white, even though it was the yellow that had run out.

He’s only six, it would be dangerous for him to cycle on the road. Perhaps you should live and let live and maybe you would enjoy your life a bit more. Have a nice day.

Harrumph. You may get to see the northern lights, but I have a slightly better chance of hosting the U.S X-Factor.

Why are they called fish-eye lenses? Is this really how fish see the world?

For road bikes you definitely want to take your shoulder width into account.

For mountain bikes it’s a bit more complicated. Wider bars do have certain advantages, but if it feels uncomfortable it’s probably wrong. FWIW I have 680 wide bars and wouldn’t want to go any wider for my rides purely on the basis of being able to fit through gaps.

Best thing would be to try riding someones bike fitted with wide bars and see how you like it!

Whenever someone posts about DE shaving it seems to kickstart a massive debate and lots of bitching. Oh wait, that happens whatever the topic. Ignore me.

    What liftman says.

I had nightmares with tubeless suring my earlier attempts. Now I use neat washing up liquid on the bead (apply after fitting tyre) and can get any tyre up first time with a trakc pump (well, so far anyway).

I thought that when using the viewfinder (i.e. when not acutally taking a photo) the camera uses a large aperture, and the aperture only actually closes when you take the photo? Non?

If you want to get invited to the Imperial Works programme just e-mail them your monthly salary and your IQ. They perform a simple analysis and decide whether to invite you or not within 24hrs.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you thoroughly understand what is and what isn’t covered. You might be surprised to find that problems you would expect to be covered aren’t. Sorry if that sounds obvious!

Not knowing anything much at all I bought a 50mm Olympus f1.8 manual lens. It’s great fun, but at f1.8 it performs quite poorly, and I didn’t appreciate that it would act like a 100mm on the M43 camera. Crazy shallow DOF compared to the kit lens though, which is fun.

Shame the other old Olympus lenses are so much more expensive though! Also a shame that you can’t get a wide-angle effect out of 35mm lenses.

Lots of rumours about new lenses for M43 coming out this year:

    http://www.mu-43.com/f92/micro-four-thirds-lens-rumors-speculation-11426/

    E.g. 45mm f2.8, 25mm f1.4

Also Pana are said to be releasing some collapsible zooms, a-la the Oly kit lens:

(FT4) Panasonic will announce it’s first compact (collapsible?) lenses within this year.

I think the Pana-Pancake would be great, but it’s not cheap!

EDIT: The internet gossip I have been reading suggests that the M43 standard is being built ‘bottom up’, i.e. consumer grade lenses are coming out first, with more pro-quality lenses coming out in the longer term.

EDIT2: Lots more rumours here: http://www.43rumors.com/category/rumor/page/2/ but word on the street is fast M43 lenses are going to be expensive.

Is there really that huge a difference in IQ between a 43 (crop factor 2), APS-D (CF-1.62) and APS-C (CF-1.52)??

I’m a total photography newbie, but isn’t this a bit like overweight middle aged men arguing over the virtues of saving 50g on a seatpost? (or maybe that just applies to me)

Anyway, here a pro 4/3 article to add fuel to the fire:

    http://fourthirds-user.com/forum/blog.php?bt=532

EDIT: The next article in the blog is interesting too, suggests that Pana 43 sensors are better than Oly for sensitivity

Depends on where you are staying, but I think it’s lovely. Some places are a bit ‘Full English Breakfast’, but some are very nice.

Wherever you stay a day trip to Ciutadella is a good idea, and maybe Mahon too. The island is actually two smaller islands that drifted into each other, so the two halves are quite different in geology terms.

I think it is illegal to build on the beaches located on the north/north-west of the island, so if you can hire a car you can visit these and they are beautiful. The chance of having a beach to yourself is very possible.

I’m not sure what is around for kids as I don’t have any, sorry!

Err are we talking about the Panasonic G10 or the Canon G10?

I was talking about the Panasonic G10! May clear up the confusion. I think the OP was talking about the Panasonic G10 too, but not 100% on that.

    – sensor is smaller
    – lens is slower
    – much larger

Don’t know about the lens speed, but the G10 has a significantly bigger sensor than the LX5 – crop factor of ~2 compared to a crop factor of ~4.3.

    1.6x </pedant>

Depends on whether it’s Canon APS-C or Everyone Else APS-C.

That’s what I got. It’s being sold in many places for that price right now.

You can get a G10 for about £330 if you look around.

If you are looking at the LX5 it’s also worth looking at the Oly XZ1 and the Canon S95. All a similar class of camera, and going for £300ish.

I think one of the main problems is the short-term nature of the financial industry.

The financial (banking) industry has a fairly rapid turnover of staff – you either make your money and get out, or else decide it’s not for you and get out, or else move to a different company.

Furthermore, bonuses are often calculated on a short term system – e.g how much did your investments earn this year, or in some cases (frighteningly) the bonus may dependent only on how much you invested and not the results.

So if, for example, someone makes a risky investment with a pension fund and it all goes tits up two years later, there is a pretty good chance the person responsible has either retired or moved and doesn’t give a flying ****.

Also manufacturing is more likely to use low skilled or unskilled labour at some level, which is probably benficial to society since there are always likely to be some people who didn’t go through higher/further education.

Or to put it another way, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. And then set fire to all your other baskets.

Did some research into this, ‘wot I learned’ (camera newbie though, so take with a pinch of salt):

G10 – The most DSR like in size and handling. Has an EVF, but not as good quality EVF as G1 or 2, or the optional (but expensive) EVF for the PENS

PEN – Differences across range, but smaller and lighter than the G10 and IQ as good/better. No EVF.

LX5 (and similar) – Truly compact, unlike the others, can fit in a shirt pocket. Smaller sensor means longer DOF, so less scope for blurring foreground/background. Less flexibility in terms of lenses and ‘serious’ photography, but significant advantages in terms of portability.

Just IMO of course. I was after my first ‘serious’ camera, but one that I would actually use as opposed to leaving at home, so went for a (cheaper) PEN. M43 standard looks like it will be around for a while, so I will be happy buying another lens or two if I get serious.

We’re all in this together, but some are more ‘in this’ than others.
