Check out where most Process Engineers work…………..

Then look at where accountants end up………..

Point noted… but what about nurses, social workers, teachers…?

And what about people that would otherwise actually want to be engineers?

Oh, and one problem with charging people lots of money is that you get a feeling of entitlement – i.e. ‘I paid for this degree, therefore I should pass it’.

When you get people paying £27k for a degree only to get a 3rd, expect to see a lot more lawsuits.

This is very much the case in the US.

I think the new fees may discourage people from certain career paths. I mean, why bother studying for engineering when you will most likely earn less than if you studied for a financial qualification, but had to pay more in fees?

I do think many degrees could be shorter and more intensive though.

If the ground is properly frozen then the rubber knobs on a tyre won’t dig in – you’d need ice spikes!

Thanks messiah – much more useful than your original answer 😀

FWIW I use hex-skewers with QR forks. *In theory* it could increase stiffness, because it’s easier to do them up tighter, but it’s also less likely to undo itself.

You ridden and compared all these forks then messiah?

Magura phaons don’t have the dual arch design, so not a good comparison :-p

EDIT my point is basic 700 x 32s may not ride much better on tarmac than your cross tyres.

Slick 32’s will ride brilliantly on road.

Most HTII BBs will need to be changed fairly regularly (~yr) depending on use.

A Chris King BB might be of use to you though, because it has a grease port. Therefore if you give your bike a thorough soaking and are concerned, you can push some more grease through. They are quite expensive…

Please can you explain why this dog has been ‘docked’ when this practice is clearly illegal, unless carried for medical reasons.

As far as I can tell it’s a bit like the theory behind circumcision. Pain/unpleasantness early on for decreased chances of pain/unpleasantness later.

Hmm, the Montane is looking just the ticket at the moment. Do they look nice on? Also, any tips on sizing? I am 5’10.5, slim but reasonably broad shouldered/muscular (honest!) with a 42″ chest – normally take a medium or large – but like a snug fit. No flapping around for me, thanks! I wear a large in the Endura.

Re. the other two, they look good but unfortunately ~£90 is probably more than I am willing to spend on something that I will probably damage when I fall off/ride into bushes! Maybe one day…

I’ve only had one Magura but yeah, it is tricky to set up to be soft enough to work properly without diving. Stiff though!

Anything from Magura with the double arch lowers.

Magura’s distinctive low-slung double arch brace design immediately distinguishes the Odur in terms of steering control. It locks down steering for outstanding on-trail accuracy that’ll shame anything this side of a bolt-through fork.

Try posting a wanted ad? Someone chucking out a worn casette might have the sprocket you want in reasonably good nick.

Once there was a man who was walking through a forest when he saw a rabbit run headfirst into a tree stump and die.

He cooked and ate the rabbit, and thought ‘All I have to do is wait here for another rabbit to run into the stump, and I have my next meal sat right in front of me!’

So he sat and waited for the next rabbit. He waited and waited, and eventually died of starvation.

Anolon do some really nice, hard wearing ones. The ones with all-metal handles are best, as you can whack them in the oven/under the grill.

For general XC use, Soul all the way.

Mmmbop is a more aggro frame designed for steep ups and downs.
    P7 is bomproof but heavy.

I would pay a bit more in order to buy British, but I wont bend over and get **** in the arse for the privalidge.

Sounds like your LBS has a pretty exotic pricing policy.

Get whatever you want! It depends on where you ride, how you ride, and how much you have to spend.

If you need any advice this forum is excellent IMO, but you will get a lot of ‘banter’ alongside the useful stuff.

It is seems to me to be clearly not true

What is your reasoning/proof behind this thought? As far as I can see it is true! Is there a physical explanation why not? Quite often reality flies in the face of ‘common sense’!

why dont we all just ride skinny road wheels if we get the same grip footprint whatever size tyre we use?

This bit doesn’t make sense to me!

On road we want minimal rolling resistance, therefore require high pressure. Narrow tyres can more readily/safely be inflated to higher pressures for various reasons, and so are better suited to road riding. You get a small contact patch due to the high pressure. On a smooth surface grip is not strongly related to the contact patch size.

Off road, because the ground is bumpy, a lower pressure, wider tyre rolls better. A lower pressure also gives a larger contact patch, and hence more grip (because both the tyre and ground are not smooth).

So, in summary, you get nominally the same contact patch for any two tyre diameters/widths at the same pressure. The thing is, nobody runs large tyres at high pressures because it defeats the point of having large tyres. Nobody runs narrow tyres at low pressures because it defeats the point of having narrow tyres.

Humans are not digitised creatures, their output force is continuous, not discrete.

    Two scenarios.

    a) Someone asks you to exert 1Nm on a lever, then 2Nm.
    b) Someone asks you to exert 0.0001Nm on a lever, then 0.0002Nm

Assume you have a digital readout or somesuch letting you know the force you uare exterting. Which one do you think you could do more accurately?

poppa yes I agree in that example but that says nothing about my stupid three metre wide tyre v 3 inch wide one.

Same thing will happen, except the big tyre will probably weigh a lot more which will contribute to the loading.

    poppa

It is obvious which must have the greatest footprint – the bigger one.

Ok, lets say you had a slick 26″x2.1″ tyre, inflated to 60 PSI, and a slick 29″x2.1″ tyre, also inflated to 60 PSI. If you loaded them up with the same weight, they would have the same contact patch area. It would differ in shape however, the 29″ tyre would have a longer, narrower contact patch whilst the 26″ tyre would have a shorter, wider contact patch.

You don’t think the fact that you are comparing a new BB to a year old BB might be responsible for part of the difference? And what’s the snow got to do with anything?

I disagree, best to buy the right knife for the job.

I think the original comment was made in the context of a limited budget. If you can only afford one or two knives you aren’t going to buy a sushi knife and a cheese knife are you?

Sometimes it’s good to have a little padding under the strip for a tighter fit.

Stan’s reccommend to remove your original (cloth?) rim tape if using narrow rims (i.e. 17mm internal) and to leave it in if you have ‘normal’ rims (i.e. 19mm internal). If you have wider than normal rims you are advised to add some foam tape under the strip.

They come in 2.1″, 2.25″ and 2.4″. I know they are comparitively WIDER than High Rollers, so I guess its a choice between the 2.1″ and 2.25″.

It’s possible that the 2.25″ is bigger for all I know.

Ok… to try and extract the maximum useful information from the STW masses…

What width Advantage comes up the same as, or slightly smaller than, a 2.35″ High Roller?

Stans – had a puncture yesterday at about 35psi and couldn’t reinflate to anywhere near the same pressure.
