As a westerner, having children is one of the worst things you can do for the planet in environmental terms. Probably.

Taking a young child on holiday has surely got to be a selfish act though, hasn’t it? I mean, what does a 4month old get out of a holiday to Majorca, Morzine or Minnesota? Not a lot I imagine, except maybe some discomfort during the flight. Yes, I think I may be trolling now.

Aye, IMO a hamster is more suited to a younger child (< 6 yrs or so?) whilst gerbils are more interesting to older children. (7+?)

IME hamsters are OK, but a bit dull. They are nocturnal (IIRC), need to be kept on their own, and they smell.

Gerbils, on the other hand, can be kept in a pair, are active during the daytime and cause little smell (desert dwellers, so dry poo). They dig tunnels too, and if you want you can fill an aquarium with straw and peat so they can dig a proper tunnel system. Much more interesting, particularly to older children.

If your little one is very little a hamster might be more robust to indelicate handling however…

Err, where did I propose that families with small kids should only make essential journeys on public transport? I was simply offering the viewpoint that parents do have an element of choice about whether their baby disturbs other passengers on the aeroplane.

Aye, a traditional (i.e. Stans/Joes) rim-strip should (I think) be in contact with the tyre, so that the sealant sort of sticks them together.

You almost end up with a tyre/rim-strip ‘tubular’.

Then in theory even if you pull back the tyre from the rim this seal should hold for a bit. This won’t happen with insulation tape, increasing the chance of burpees.

BTW browning meat does not mean sticking it in a moderately warm pan until it becomes opaque. Browning meat is when you place it in a very hot pan with just enough oil to stop it sticking, and cook it until it is a dark brown and probably covered in crusty/marmitey bits. This will improve the flavour of many stews significantly, particularly dark beef/lamb stews. And you will need to deglaze the pan and add that too!

Basically, good all-round tyres. Some tyres might be lighter, faster, more robust, more grippy or better in mud, but not all at once. A good tyre to leave on the bike for most of the year.
