Correct me if I’m wrong, but combining your username and the fact you’re looking for an Audi undertray, I’m going to assume you own a diesel A2, circa 2001?

If you do, keep an eye on the owner’s club forum, A2OC, as quite often enthusiasts buy a dying A2 and break it up to sell off cheaply to forumites. I know, right.

Undertrays come up fairly regularly but are quickly snaffled when they do, so you need to be on the ball.

EDIT oh and if you are looking for an A2 undertray, just ensure you buy the right one – petrol and diesel A2s have different mounting designs for the undertrays iirc.

    Is a provisional accepted then?

    Aye provisional is fine!

+1 driving license, as a 19 year old nothing much else gets accepted – student cards & entitlement cards are too easy to tamper with so most shops will insist on seeing your drivers license.

I killed mine too, never gave me any issues riding without it. Just check every so often to make sure the bolt hasn’t worked itself lose/disappeared, but don’t over tighten the bolt as they’re dead easy to round out.

    810mm on 26″ hardtail over here, if I had a 29er I’d need at least a yardstick.

All that extra wheel and stuff, innit.

My dad is an utter warrior.

Got me into biking on hand-me-down bikes, encouraged me to save up for things I wanted (specifically thinking about my first bike). Continues to work his backside off to support the family (I’m the youngest of three, and all of us have moved away to go to uni).

I broke my elbow a few years back, and he came straight from a long shift to spend at least four hours in hospital with me, until I pretty much had to force him to go and get some food before he passed out. Once I’d had my surgery and was starting physio (not fun), I noticed he was beginning to grow a beard (hadn’t had time to shave as he’d been running between bed, work and hospital for a week). I joked that he should grow it until I had full movement back.

13 weeks later he looked like a bear.

Once I was back on the bike properly, he took me out at least once a week for several months, for proper father-son bonding and all that jazz, then one day he came a cropper on a big jump while I was in front of him. I finished the run, and waited for him, and waited, and waited.. when I eventually went back up (walking, then jogging, running, sprinting.. you know that feeling you get in your stomach when all of the worst case scenarios run through your head?), he was sat on the track, nowhere near his bike, with one shoulder near his belly button. Wanted to drive to A&E, typical tough man. Refused pain killers when the paramedics finally arrived, wanted to wait until it “hurts enough to be worth the bother”. Turns out he had broken his collarbone, three ribs, wrist, punctured a lung, and picked up a healthy amount of grazing and concussion. They didn’t find out until weeks later (when a concerned physio decided something didn’t feel right) that he’d actually broken his elbow as well.. the elbow which they’d been using as leverage for his shoulder rehab.

Throughout the whole thing, never once did I hear a word of complaint.

I could go on.. One Christmas, he built us a soapbox using scrap wood and an old pram. Still the best present ever.

Reading threads like this makes me realise how lucky I am to still have him around, and makes me want to learn as much from him as I can in whatever time we’ve got left. If I can be half the man my dad is one day, I’ll be very, very proud.

Okay, bizarrely enough, I can get a Merc A Class or an Audi A2 for the same money (insurance n’all), with slightly higher VED.

    Or a 100k mile Subaru @ £1.5k, with <£900 insurance.

Been sat here putting random cars though the same quote, and getting some interesting results..

A Jag X-Type is also a cheap option, with cheap insurance, but a Saab 9-7 is considerably more to insure.

Might end up with a much nicer car for the same money!

Honda Jazz is a out of my budget at this stage, cracking cars though! My brother has one of the older body shapes, and it fits his family of for including a twin pram in no bother.

Mazda demio looks like getting spares could be a pain, there’s only 8 for sale in the UK on autotrader just now so they’re probably mostly off the roads now.

Will have a look at the Kia Rio at some point.

Tbh the Wagon R is growing on me. Seems to be slightly quicker to 60 than the Agila, with cheaper road tax for a pre 2004 version? Thereafter they shared engines so are pretty much identical.

Donk,I wouldn’t be getting a car if I didn’t need one, and I’m sure I’ll find the huge power and girl-impressing potential of a 1.3l granny car totally irresistible. It’s all testosterone and stuff, innit, cause I’m 19, innit?

Give it an A-Team paint job

YES. Oh yes. Will run it past the girlfriend.. 😆

if you really REALLY need a car then do it

if you can get away with not having one, don’t

if you need a car then that’s not a bad choice, cars are only ever a depreciating asset and the trick is to reduce the amount of money spent on them

^my parents’ words exactly, and it’s fair enough. I’ll need a car by the middle of summer and not before, but I’m just getting an idea of roughly how much money I’ll need to plough in to it, and what car to aim for. I think I’ll end up with a better deal if I research it properly and know what problems to look for, roughly what it might be worth and what I could reasonably haggle to.

Just thought I’d stick it up here to see what people who potentially have experience living with this car or its equivalents have to say about it 🙂

a car is simply a tool

My thoughts exactly. I’ll try to keep it relatively clean and mechanically sound, but further than that so long as it goes it’ll do just fine!

I think a flat cap and pipe, possibly even a charity shop tweed jaicket, would be standard driving uniform if I ended up with one of these.

General consensus is “go for it” then?

I can get insured for a touch over £500, which is pretty impressive being as a 2004 Clio 1.2 comes in at £800 insurance..

Help. 😯 That front end reminds me of a Honda for some reason..

Y plate or later 306 HDI estate will cost same to tax and insure, whilst being faster, more economical and (arguably) more stylish.

A big Pug would eat my money in fuel and repairs.

Nope you are a genius young man, I reckon they’ve got an odd charm, most ladeez are less impressed by big exhausts and blingy paint than you think.

My girlfriend said “Yes, but to a point. That car is a stylistic abomination”

I remember in gran turismo they were actually quite a nippy wee number!

Bar ends on my commuter (90’s Orange Clockwork) here, love ’em! Much easier for me to get in a powerful position whilst sat on the saddle as they keep my chest open when I’m tucked down for aero’namics, or something.

I also had those bars made by Orange with Bar-ends built in. All one piece, brilliant (at the time).

How does one install grips on a one-piece bar-with-bar-ends setup..?!

I grew up in Dundee and moved to Glasgow last year for uni.

Glasgow’s great, but when I go home for the weekend I feel like I’m drunk on fresh sea air (I’m from [posh_accent] Broughty Ferry [/posh_accent], which is a pretty nice bit to the east) and I’ve got plenty of choice as to what type of cycling I want to do and where.

MTB: Sidlaws, Templeton Woods, Tentsmuir, Glen Clova/Doll/Prosen, Kinnoul hill/ Deuchney woods, Comrie Croft, Carron Valley and Laggan Wolftrax not too far away, the Cairngorms proper not far off either
Road: Take your pick! Head out Glamis way, or into Fife (roads are a bit busier in Fife), or up the coast past Arbroath..

Plus, plenty of top quality beaches for when the sun’s out (remember, sunniest place in SCOTLAND doesn’t actually count for too much) and the prospect of house values rising when the waterfront is done if you get a place in the centre.

I miss Dundee a wee bit.

Orange Clockwork. Cracking bike, popped some mudguards and a pair of (almost) slicks on it and it flies on the commute! Bought on here in the summer. Cost less than £200 with new wheels, brake pads, tyres and cabling, but I’m really attached to it.

Oh, and I hope I’ve upset someone by running bar ends on a riser bar! 😆

Right, found a frame number. I think it says 91129, with the possibility of a capital E towards the right of the bb shell, although that may just be scrapes. There is an X with possibly a Y underneath it on the bottom of the downtube.

    IMG_20140918_170546191 by poltheball[/url], on Flickr

Does that give anyone any further clues as to what it might be?

Cheers for replies. I’m too big for the frame but would be happy enough to get it working again and move it on. Any ideas as to what it could be worth? Drive could do with mossing, garage could do with clearing… but I’m moving out to uni at the weekend, so I’m not going to be doing it 😆

Hadn’t thought of checking frame numbers, good shout. Will have a look and see if I can find anything on the bb shell.

What do we think, could it be a Flying Scot? I vaguely remember the name being bandied about, and it does look similar to some quick google images search results..

It was pretty much washed out when I was there last month, quite a few OTB moments. I’d be tempted to heather bash it down the ridge instead and re join at the start of the forest section.

I’ve considered this but never bothered doing it, Kilbo’s a nice tech challenge 8) If you do give it a bash, lemme know how it goes! Might do that next time I’m up actually..

So how do you get back to Glen Prosen? There’s the Minister’s Path further east, what’s that like?

A few years back, before the Kilbo cottage was rebuilt, me and a couple of mates camped in the ruins that were there for a couple of days. One ride we did was up the Kilbo, down into Doll forest, and back round via the Minister’s Path (mostly to avoid stags and hunters as we’d made the mistake of going during the rut…). It’s a grassy track, starts off in the woods on the Clova side but soon opens up to a grassy hill which you hurdle. It’s wide enough for a Landrover, and doesn’t seem to be used very often. There are wee shooting posts along the way, and although you don’t climb very high I seem to remember having a decent view.

I’d say if you’re planning on doing Minister’s path, park your car at Glen Prosen village (where Minister’s spits you out) and do the tarmac/gravel riding up the glen to Kilbo at the start of your day, so that you finish on a downhill. Only problem with that plan is the lack of watering hole in Prosen; the pub in Clova is definitely worth a stop for a chat and a pint before the final 10km or so back to the car via Minister’s Path.

Went for a pee on a Virgin train.
I did this a while ago, but when I pressed the button to enter the loo the door slid open to reveal a shocked 40-something woman frozen in embarrassment mid flow, I tried to stop the door and re-close it, but the bloody thing wouldn’t close until it was fully open so I stood there feeling really uncomfortable while it opened so I could close it for her. I then had to walk through 3 carriages to get to the next working toilet as I wasn’t going to wait for her to finish!

That’s fantastic, haha! They really should have an override function for such occasions…

Poltheball , my ex mother in law used the loo on the train.
The guy inside obviously pressed closed but not lock.
Upon relaying this story to us she then exclaimed that in all the years she was married to her husband she had never seen him dry his willy in such a fashion.
    Bless.

Drying it vigorously, was he? 😉

I’ll never understand why they didn’t just stick to the visible handbolt method. Whenever I pee on a train now I’m always on edge…

Went for a pee on a Virgin train. Mid flow, the electric door slowly begins to open…

Cue shocked 40-something woman not knowing where to look, but too frozen in embarrassment to walk away! I’m pleased to report that my aim remained straight and true throughout, even though I had to shuffle round to regain my modesty. I did however pretend to get off at the next stop, and move to a different carriage pronto.

    I hate untrustworthy electronic locks.

Poltheball – yep. Eventually followd an newly cut access road alongside which they seem to be laying thick bore pipe? Road ran out before I saw any path up to the saddle between Mayar and Dreish so I chucked it. Any pointers? Though I won’t be back until next August!

    @Poltheball
    – We are supposed to be going that way in a couple of weeks. Would be grateful if you have some local knowledge on that path and whether we need to reconsider our route

Once you pass the (recently rebuilt) cottage on your right near the top of the glen, you pretty quickly come to the end of the road; there’s a patch of trees (on the same side as the cottage; they’re the only trees that end of the glen), of which the west side is fairly straight. The Kilbo path runs parallel to the west side of the trees (heading north), pretty close by them, so if the path isn’t visible, just follow the line of the trees and you’ll pick up the path further up. The gamekeeper uses it with his 8-wheeler, so it’s fairly easy to find (tyre tracks etc). You keep heading up this track til you reach a t-junction; head left for Mayar/Corrie Fee, head right for Dreish/Kilbo path to Glen Doll forest.

Once you get up there it’s worth topping both Munroes (Dreish and Mayar) as they’re easy and the view is great; both are pretty bike friendly. The Shank of Drumfollow (Kilbo path heading down towards Glen Doll forest) is a bit sketchy, but about 75% rideable on a hardtail. Just whatever you do, if you feel like you’re falling off, bail to the left… Once the Kilbo path reaches Glen Doll forest, the track is absolutely ace after a stream hop or two; really soft and loamy with rooty sections, drainage ditch hops etc. You then pop out into a deforested area, which is a bit rockier but still 100% rideable, and you just follow the path down. It eventually reaches and crosses White Water, and you can head down to the ranger centre from there. Great ride, done it a few times and can safely say it’s worth it!
