I’m riding Ambergate on Thursday, is it dry enough to make the swoopy bits or am I going to have to straight line it again?
Not done much there this year so hoping to make at least a few 2016 KOMs.
poisonspiderFree MemberIt’s something to do with the stereo effect and the fact that one ear is higher up your head than the other.
aaaah! I never knew that and just assumed I had weird ears!!!!Actually, I think I might be getting that mixed with barn owls?

It’s a evolutionary throwback when you had to listen for prey in the forest. The different heights allow you to pin point things better.
If you have them the wrong way round the noise will be behind you rather than in front of you.

I’m there for a long weekend on Thursday. :D
Just sayin’
poisonspiderFree MemberI’ve used an old Garmin eTrex 10 through a window, and a smartphone with all of the transmitty stuff turned off (but GPS turned on) just to show the kids how fast / where we were flying over at the time. Worked fine, but the devices needed to be right up against the window. Nice to know where you are over-flying and what you might be legitimately able to see out of the window.
This isn’t really want I meant.
I was after something that would tell me where my bike bag was if it got lost in transit.
poisonspiderFree MemberThere’s a couple I’ve seen, LugLoc is one and TrakDot is another.
It looks like LugLoc has had some issues with telecom service providers and info is scarce for TrakDot, hence the post really.
poisonspiderFree MemberThe ones I’ve seen use a mobile sim card that automatically goes into sleep mode when in a plane. You then send it a text and it texts back a GPRS coordinate you can view on Google Maps.

Quit your winging folks remember it’s not even a race! Why should that make it any less frustrating?
The real issue for me wasn’t that I might not get a place, it was that the process was just so painfully inadequate.
poisonspiderFree MemberIf this was supposed to add the experience, add to the excitement of whether you get in or not, it totally failed for me.
It has been the most frustrating 38 mins of my life.
In fact it has put me off the event completely, what a waste of time.
Now closed.
poisonspiderFree MemberWho ever said this was the best way of entering instead of a pre-entered ballot is a complete A-hole!!
My laptop went out the window after 1000 refreshes!!
What a total bag of bollox.
poisonspiderFree Membercant understand why people would just buy something on the back of a magazine review.
Sometimes it’s all you can go off. Canyon, YT etc are a case in point.
I guess I’m naively wishing mag reviews were just honest and impartial. It’s really quite sad to think they are all just corrupt BS.
The original thread was something about the Giant Reign (it’s on the forum page now), can’t get the linky thing to work.

I ride the bikes I buy. Easy answer. The manufacturers that make it easy reap the rewardsI don’t follow?
Do you mean you just buy it and don’t worry whether it’s any good or not, whether another one would have been better?
But what if another would actually have been better? Surely you’d want to know that in advance?
poisonspiderFree MemberGoing in May, not been with them before but a few of our extended group have.
poisonspiderFree MemberIt allowed me to book 8 bikes in one go online, so I’m assuming they’re ok with that.
We’re all taking bike bags, which can weigh around 8kg empty so even my 30lb carbon enduro bike is pushing it a bit by the time you’ve added a camelbak, shoes and helmet.
I guess what I want to know is how keen are they when weighing your bike bag?

poisonspiderFree MemberI rate mine.
Primarily wanted the course following function without having to go to a fully mapped unit. It is basic but I’ve not had any real issues on my road or CX bike. Not tested it on complex off road stuff like round the woods though.
Only negative thing is Garmin Connect and Express, absolute GARBAGE!!
all routes have to be manually created on garmin connect,
The above isn’t true though. You can load from any source as long as you convert it to FIT format with gpsies.com. You can then simply drag and drop the .fit file to the NEWFILES folder on the Garmin within Windows Explorer. It will then appear as a course on the device. The only problem I’ve noticed with this method (it’s done it once) was the dist-to-end function didn’t work whilst on the ride.
You do have to use Connect to upload to Strava if you want to use the Bluetooth method, alternatively you can upload direct on a computer.
Not used HRM or cadence sensors so can’t comment on those. If you’re not arsed about the Bluetooth connectivity the 20 would be just as good I guess.
poisonspiderFree MemberWhich bit?
Ass – sex
Grass – drugs
Gas – FuelI’ve lived a sheltered life!
poisonspiderFree MemberThe correct version is “ass, grass or gas – no-one rides for free”.
I don’t understand the ‘correct’ version either??
poisonspiderFree MemberJust a quick follow up.
Basecamp didn’t work for me either, it showed the Garmin device in the ‘file manager’ style list on the left hand side, however when I asked it to ‘send to device’ the device list pop up box was empty?!
GPSies seems to have worked and it created a FIT file.
I then simply copied it to the Garmin’s course folder in Windows Explorer. The course looked ok when I checked the map view on the device but I’ve not tried to navigate using it yet.
What a palava!
poisonspiderFree MemberThanks deadkenny, I’ll try give Basecamp a go.
Although, if Tracklogs sorted themselves out and allowed FIT exports I could do it directly from the mapping program.
poisonspiderFree Memberbigbeard – Member
This might be able to convert from GPX to FIT format (and its free):http://www.tcxconverter.com/TCX_Converter/TCX_Converter_ENG.html
Thanks BB but it doesn’t support FIT export, only import :(
poisonspiderFree Membersirromj – Member
Create route save as gpx and pop it in new files folder, ride route and upload to strava as normal.Unfortunately the Garmin 25 doesn’t support this option. You can see the NEWFILES folder and it will let you drag and drop a GPX file into it, however it doesn’t show up as a course on the device. (also when you reconnect it to the PC the folder is empty again!)
poisonspiderFree MemberWe did Mach 3 a few weeks ago (the hottest Nov day in Wales on record no less) and really enjoyed it. It is defo not a technical ride and it’s is true you’re not rewarded with anything resembling much of a downhill. It’s not technical at all in fact and distinctly XC.
However,
If you want a proper old skool, ‘out in the wilds’ style ride, with great scenery and a very natural feel I would heartily recommend it.
poisonspiderFree MemberThe monarch on the Capra is a standard fast black 222×66 high volume one (not debonair)
The BOS kirk is 222×70.
Is it? Fair enough.
poisonspiderFree MemberThey only stock certain sizes and tunes in the UK, YT Capra is a non-standard length to boot.
Is it?
I thought it was 222×66 (for the BOS) and 222×63 for RS Monarch?
The 222×63 is a standard isn’t it?
Fox do a 8.75″x2.5″ Float which is 222×63?
poisonspiderFree MemberAs many have said, it’s horses for courses.
The White Peak tends to be less rocky therefore a HT or short travel full suss is fine.
The Dark Peak however is a bit more demanding if you want to ride at pace. You can still obviously get round everything but to really hit the descents quickly, I’d recommend 140mm-160mm travel.
As others I’ve been riding there for 20 years on a range of bikes and, whilst the climbing is definitely easier on my XC bike, I’ve never ridden it faster downhill than on my 160mm bike.
poisonspiderFree MemberI like all the ones that haven’t been plastered all other the internet and become 6 foot wide with 8 line choices
Which are those??
The Beast deserves a mention as does Stannage plantation.
poisonspiderFree MemberI’m still astonished that people think you need 160mm travel.
Oh God that’s whole new willy waving argument!!
“Depends what you ride and how gnarly you are”
“I ride park so 160mm isn’t enough”
“If you’re a good enough rider you don’t need that much travel”
“I can ride everything in the UK on a hardtail faster than most people on full sus”
“Needing more travel is making up for being a crap rider”
“I obviously ride more techy trails than you”
“If you don’t need 160mm how come <insert a famous ‘enduro’ rider name here> rides a 160mm bike, is he a crap rider then???”
“There isn’t a trail in the UK that needs 160mm”
“Get on trend you beardy Luddite”etc etc ad nauseam.

You know when you ask a question and then part of you wishes you hadn’t bothered?I wish you hadn’t bothered!
It’s all your fault, I’m sure me and JJ would have got on like a house on fire if you hadn’t asked such a ridiculous question!
It’s clearly ridiculous because the YT is the only possible answer!
(JOKE!!!!)
poisonspiderFree MemberCrikey, that Spesh must be quick, you’ve got a parachute on your back!! 8O
Defo not Enduro!
poisonspiderFree MemberConstructive dismissal possibly?
Just to be clear, he’d have to leave to make a constructive dismissal claim.
poisonspiderFree Memberi haven’t read all 8 (!) pages
You haven’t missed much, just me and JimJam bickering.
Nothing particularly constructive, so I wouldn’t waste your time.

First observation – it takes too much reading to understand what you do (and I knew what you did before looking at the site due to your posting on here about it in the past).Try to get some text further up and in a much shorter description – something like:
plus 1

The little diamonds look like they should be clickable, plus 1 to that too. I initially thought they were ‘next page’ arrows.
poisonspiderFree MemberDrop casually in conversation that you’re doing the above all of a sudden because you’ve taken on advice from a friend who’s a no-win-no-fee employment lawyer.
For what it’s worth I’d advise against that. I’ve been the one conducting poor performance appraisals before (properly I hasten to add) and this kind of idle threat is less than helpful. Given what has been said about the manager’s style, I suspect it would make him more determined to get rid of you and call your bluff.
maybe I’m missing something, but no-one seems to have suggested fixing the stock control system/problem?
A very valid point. If it is your job to do it (or even influence it if it isn’t) get it sorted.
If it is your job then their postion would appear justified. If it isn’t and they dismiss, any evidence that you tried to meet their requirements, despite it not being in your role description, would go in your favour.
poisonspiderFree MemberThe first thing an unfair dismissal trial would consider is the contract, what are you employed as.
Then what is the role description for that position.
Then what training has been given to support you in that role.
They will also consider the process followed by the employer leading up to the dismissal, is it in line with their disciplinary/performance management policy. They are obliged to have a written policy and make sure the staff are fully informed about it. If they don’t it’s a major black mark.
The specifics you mentioned doesn’t sound like it would be classed as a gross misconduct issue therefore escalation through the process needs to be demonstrated, with each stage fully documented. Improvement targets needed to be clear and achievable (unachievable or contradictory targets could be seen as ‘unfair’).
They need to produce evidence that you have been given the opportunity and support to achieve the improvement targets and that your failure is wilful or a clear lack of ability.
One possible option is to lodge a grievance against the manager for unfair treatment (basically bollocking and threatening you over an issue that is not your responsibility). Again they are obliged to have formal procedures to cover this. If it went to tribunal, demonstrating you have formally complained could go in your favour. If they are following poor practice with the dismissal process chances are they won’t follow the grievance properly either, which again goes in your favour.
Good luck.
poisonspiderFree MemberAny better?
Not really.
Why is there no emoticon pulling its hair out an in tears of frustration?
Sigh:
In the fewest words I can manage so there’s little for you to misunderstand;
I never said geometry isn’t important.
It’s nothing to do with the YT.
It’s the dynamics/kinematics bit that is nonsense.
