Nothing wrong in any of that DT78, the point in question is whether or not the instant you finish a ride you whip out the ‘strava enabled device of choice’, check your stats and talk only about those stats for the next half hour. If so, congratulations, you can consider yourself a Strava bore. If on the other hand you check your stats, pat yourself on the back and proceed to consider and discuss a less trivial aspect of riding/life then you are unfortunately just normal.

    This.

But it is the phrase ‘save me from….’ that I suspect is setting this off.

So within 3 words the STW massive have formed an opinion.

Yeah but. They weren’t actually talking to him were they? If he was moaning that he went to the pub all his mates could talk about was Strava then fine. But it wasn’t his conversation. The point is that he should not be getting bored by people who are nothing to do with him. I am sitting in a cafe just now, a lot of people are having conversations, some of which I suspect I might find rather dull. So what? It is nothing to do with me. Why is it worthy of me commenting on a forum about it?

    Ok. There’s two issues here.

One is about ‘eavesdropping’ and the other is about Strava bores.

I can see why some people may find listening in on other peoples conversations objectionable, I just don’t necessarily think it’s a massive issue in this instance. However, I’ll take criticism for that on the chin and review my moral compass in that respect (read: whatever!).

Had I posted a generic comment about Strava bores obsessing over every last detail of their stats and seemingly missing out on the wider pleasures of cycling, especially when they drone on and on about it. I suspect it might have generated a different set of responses.

    Then, maybe not.

So you didn’t overhear another’s conversation then? Did you make it up to make yourself sound popular anticipating everyone would agree?

    (good grief)

No, I meant I never asked for anyone to be ‘sympathetic’ to my ‘eavesdropping prowess’.

You are making it about eavesdropping, my issue was with Strava bores.

Had you said ‘So not only do we have to be sympathetic to your views on Strava bores…’, that would have made sense.

And ‘everyone’ never agrees on STW!

So not only do we have to be sympathetic to your eavesdropping prowess

    Erm…not sure I said that?!

    And zero points for style.

Completely misrepresenting what I’ve said is v.poor.

More he got all offended by a conversation between random strangers that he wasn’t part of enough to come online and decry that it should be a banned topic if he is listening…

To be clear, I never said it should be ‘a banned topic’. I didn’t even say I had a problem with them talking about Strava in general, my issue was the wittering on about the minute detail of it all and that it was boring.

My point was; and this is where I feel I should be allowed an opinion without being advised to keep it to myself for fear of it ‘not going well’ or being told I should take up golf; that I wished people would see there’s more to this sport/pastime/activity than the performance stats you get from Strava.

If people disagree, fine, I really don’t have a problem with that. If you’re going to take pee or criticise , just do with style like WCA.

Please carefully consider to yourself ‘is this going to end well?’, before posting on STW. This will save you all sorts of grief. I veto approximately 99.87 % of threads I might start on here, on this basis.

    What does ‘end well’ mean?

Do you mean receiving some form of approval from the STW opinion police, like I care?

It also sounds a little bit like censorship to me. Basically I should fear negative comments therefore not post?!

As did the comment about taking up golf. I say something you don’t like so I’m no longer welcome as an MTBer.

    Seriously, got over yourselves.

OP…where do you ride and what do you look like. Please post a pic so I can ensure if I ever come across you I can confirm with you that the conversation you are about to eavesdrop on is permissable.

A bit passive aggressive? Do you want to know where I live?

also kind of ironic that the antisocial bunch of strava nerds were in a group having a chinwag, whilst you were on your own, alone…with nowt better to do than listen in to someone elses conversation…

And you’ve wounded me there, your’re right I just wanted to be in their gang, I’m sooo lonely. Will you be my friend?

K-Diff = Difference between my fastest time and the current KOM
KOM = KOM, except where I am KOM as I just leave the 1st losers time there to remind me how much better I am
T-Diff = Difference between my fastest time and the current fastest of the Thursday night group
Thursday = Fastest of the Thursday night group
    Fastest = My fastest time
Trail = Name of the Trail

Ordered to show the trails I am closest to KOM first. Helps me target the closest KOMS and each ride

Take note those above, now that’s how you post and opposing response.
Funny, clever and no moral pontificating. Thanks WCA

You could have equally been complaining that it was a bunch of mums droning on about babies, or a bunch of farmers banging on about the price of bull semen, etc. The reaction on here would have been much the same.

    I disagree, not unsurprisingly.

I have no point of reference with bull semen so I wouldn’t know they were being boring. With Strava I know what they were on about so it resonated.

And they weren’t exactly whispering so ‘eavesdropping’ is a bit melodramatic.

There’s an interesting hypocrisy here on STW.

My complaint about people obsessing and boring on about Strava times seems to have generated support for people who are interested in their times and gaining KOMs etc. To the extent where a simple comment about them being boring has been turned into me wanting to stop them enjoying their sport?!

However, there is plenty of pretty vehement comments in the past about people cutting corners and ‘not riding the obvious line’ in pursuit of better Strava times. All of which was roundly condemned.

I’m not sure you can have it both ways.

Or is it, “don’t complain about Strava nerds being boring unless they are spoiling Cut Gate, in which case they’re w**kers”.

complaining about others going about their chosen sport

I’m not sure I did complain about that did I?

I was moaning about them being boring. It just so happened they were being boring about a cycling related issue.

did’t you see the thread last week where we moaned about people moaning about people moaning about people moaning about cyclists using strava and how everything was awful these days?

I can believe there actually was one!

So you were listening in to a conversion you disapproved of, and are now, remotely, telling those people to have a different conversation.

Why didn’t you go up to them and just say all this to their faces?

    Oh please

I’m not telling them to have a different conversation, I’m just saying it was tedious.

Are you seriously suggesting I should have interrupted a group of 5 or 6 people and say ‘Do you mind talking about something else, you’re boring me’?

    Idiot.

And before you say, ‘well don’t moan about it then’, anonymously moaning about people and stuff is a staple STW thread topic!

I recently got a T-130 RS having been riding a Capra and I can certainly notice the drop in travel on the downs (negatively) and on the ups (positively)

I’m 5’9″ and got a medium, which seems to fit fine.

The suspension has needed a bit of fiddling to get it set right and I think I’m nearly there, I’ve added an extra token to the fork. It is a very capable descender but large square edge rocks at speed expose the reduced travel, which is not surprising really.

For what it’s worth, component wise:
The tyres aren’t wet/sandy rock freindly, especially the rear.
Had an issue with the SRAM Roam 30 rear wheel in that the freehub falls off when you take it out the frame. Not good.
I’ve had issues bleeding the XT brakes too, I realise it’s not a problem with Whyte but it’s still irritating for a new bike.

I suspect it’s my riding style (which is straight line, no finesse) that makes the reduced travel more noticeable. If you’re a smooth technical rider I’m sure the T-130 can cope with pretty much any trail.

there is a place for Strava but it is not and should never be the reason you ride or the only thing you take away from your day on the hill.
    Why not ?

Each to their own, who am I to dictate to anyone which bit of cycling they have to enjoy.

That explains it. Folk from Donny don’t steal bikes as they have trouble pedalling with their 6 toed webbed feet.

Don’t kid yourself, the local bike shops sell web feet to SPD conversion shoes.

And they are covered away from home, including theft from a hotel room, as long as it’s locked (the room that is).

I rang them to clarify and they make not distinction for pedal cycles.

If this is correct, why would anyone pay for cycle specific insurance? It just seems extortionate by comparison.

    Just filled it in.

The last question was a bit ambiguous for me.

Do you feel that the party responsible for resurfacing the route should be liable in the event of an injury, or is that merely the nature of your activity?
Assume that the surface is not “dangerous” as such, merely in keeping with the local environment.
    Yes
    No

The answer to liability is ‘no’, but the answer to ‘is it the nature of the activity’, it’s ‘yes’?

    I felt cheated.

When they abandoned the climb and then got in a helicopter to land on another mountain, why didn’t they just land on the one they were climbing, that supposedly hadn’t been touched by human foot before??

Start at Fairholmes, clockwise round Derwent, Howden and Ladybower to the A57.

Cross Ladybower dam and follow the trail at the side of the reservoir to the bottom of The Beast and get back on the A57, turn left.

Turn right up past Rowlee Farm to the cross roads. Go straight over and across the fields to the farm at the end of Fairholmes road, then back to the carpark.

40km, 700m climbing all doable on a CX
