I really like running in my vff's – have transformed my style into something far more efficient and light on my feet – speed's gone up too. even on pavements they're fine.

The South gave the North: An economy.

    Ooooooooooooooooooh, suits you sir!!

    and the banking crisis ??

banking crisis? what crisis? That was due to everyone overstretching themselves, and nothing to do with specific regions.

best spec around that price will be the boardmans. Not sure about the frames though, but kit wise you're unlikely to better it.

I'd be more tempted to look at a secondhand Ti option – Global, on-one etc.

let's just face it, it's grim up north.

On the balance of it, the North gave us: Cheryl Cole.

Northerners think Southern riding is crap as it gives them another thing to be bitter about. Since the mines closed and hovis stopped doing doorstep deliveries there's not much joy up there.

Leatherhead / Dorking / Ashtead (particularly) are fine if you're looking for somewhere to go and die of boredom, but the closer to London you get the more "life" you have. I went to school in Leatherhead and grew up near there. Certainly wouldn't live there if you don't have a family and expect to go out occasionally. Plus the train service becomes superwank in the evening / weekends with frequency of trains being approx. nil.

Personally I chose Surbiton for ease of commute – can ride into Bank in London in well under an hour, frequent trains and is 20 mins from Waterloo (where someone above got Esher as 20 I don't know), and by car it's around 25-30 mins to the start of the Surrey Hills riding. Furthest reasonably as a 34 year-old chap I'd want to be out of London as I'd go mental without the social aspects. Can still get to the riding easily enough.

Contrary to what is asserted above some duels are illegal to ride on. They will be signed tho. Edinburgh bypass and the a90 are illegal to ride bikes on for example and I have come across others

that's some serious potency you're packing there TJ. I'm lucky if I get midway across the hard shoulder.

    if i know someone, fine.

if i don't know someone, but have seen them riding ok, and they look like they know what they're doing, fine.

if they're a prick on my commute home trying to get a free ride, it's a no-no, and I will either ride away from them or systematically drop my speed (at which point they usually get aggro and shout at me for doing so).

if they're riding like a prick generally (purely subjective judgement by me), i'll do the above.

If they're a violent little gobshite like some fat little eunoch that tried to tag along my commute and despite repeated requests from me to either back off or go in front of me, got violent when I decided to be very random with my speed – hopefully he's decorating the front of a transit.

i don't read it that way. I read it as utter frustration that both he and the team are under par and they know it. It's immediate lashing out at other parties that are critical of you, which in basic pschology is one of the signs of being stressed and frustrated.

my opinion is that if you think the players are played too much for what they do, try it for yourself. What, you're not good enough? What, you honestly think it's just kicking a ball around? Could you honestly carry the weight of expectation of a nation in the way that only the England Football team have to of all our sports teams?

Cycling is, to a large extent a sport for the individual, so the pressures to perform are entirely separate and far far less visible.

Despite his performance on the pitch not being great in the last couple of games, I'm actually glad that Rooney had the passion to let that out. It shows he knows the teams under par and cares. Without that, we'd definitely be out.

I'm sure people can benefit from skills training, I just think that the ability to be able to corner both left and right isn't a skill per se, it's a fundamental of riding a bike.

I'm by no means a great rider, but i learnt that by myself when i was a child.

i agree with the principle glen, i just don't agree that it can be taught through anything other than practice, and the whole thing of "oh, i'm on the internet therefore i can learn it" is just daft. If someone's unable to find their way to do it naturally, that's what I find bizarre – it's riding ffs. it just happens.

Get out there and ride, have fun, ride with people and see what they do differently. then ride some more until you find what works for you as that'll be entirely subjective. Over-analysing it in a thread seems a bit lame.

glenp, once again i fundamentally disagree with you.

and your encouragement of more people onto the surrey hill pees me off too.

much as i hate it, i'm with sfb on this. Do you really notice that much difference? If you do, I'd say there's a fundamental problem rather than anything else.

Analysing it verbally on the internet will do f'ck all as opposed to getting out there and riding, and at the very worst getting a mate to watch you go all grinder round your chocolate side.

couldn't you all just ride and stop over-analysing?

yup, it does need to be the internal tabs too, but the impression i got from the applestore was that they'd checked the outer ones, they'd failed so they wouldn't even need to open it up.

I wasn't aware of the inner tabs at the time else I would have most certainly requested to see them. So, £140 for a new one had to be found.

And they make damn sure they keep the old one…

I once put my phone (not an iphone) through the washing machine.

I took it to the shop and told them it was "broken". They sent it away – and it came back unfixed "water damaged". There is a special sticker which changes color when it gets wet.

I suspect these people have done the same thing, but don't want to own up/ pay for a new phone

I worked out in the gym with mine on an arm strap, and then stretched and chucked it in my pocket whilst walking up the 15 or so stairs back to the changing room.

It then decided to die, and Apple concluded that it was water damaged. So, in reference to the crass comment above, it has not been submerged, it has not been sprayed, it has purely been subject to low humidity for a short time (circa 20 seconds).

Personally I didn't expect a phone to be that pathetic, but hey, it seems that Apple do.

Have you tried front crawl? You hardly use your legs in that and distance swimmers typically only use them for balance or a quick spurt.

very subjective – from what I remember a good crawl swimmer gets a decent amount of propulsion from the legs (around 20% if I recall correctly), and a good and efficient kick will also lessen drag compared with either a lazy or limited kick. The only thing that changes over distance is the need to develop the most efficient kick you can.

This is pretty much the definition of oppression. When the proud people of Scotland are ground under the English jackboot in this humiliating fashion, is it really any wonder that the SNP condones suicide bombings?

I feel oppressed by Skittles. I want to taste a rainbow but they lie with their marketing guff. Don't even get me started on Lucky Charms.

we're in the world cup. get over it. just like we will when we're knocked out. I think it's great that the PM is clearly showing his support for the nation that elected him. Let's face it, Scotland and Wales didn't.

And if it's considered two fingers, deal with it.

i reckon he relies on shouting louder than anyone else. Comedy genius he is not. frankly, I find him unfunny and hugely irritating in a "look at me, I'm so funny because i shout a lot and am fat therefore must be funny. You think i'm not funny i'll shout louder until you do" kind of way.

Personally prefer the Chris Morris / Armando Ianucci style of intelligent comment / subversion type comedy.

    M&S as well.

Sadly though, with a few bikes under 4k the premium was ok, specifying one road bike that's over that doubled the premium.

Hey Jon. I've been dressing up as a racoon and causing mayhem in the Kingston area.

Next week I intend to dress up as a chip and try and get Jim Rosenthal to eat me during World Cup coverage.
