The other thing, I spent the first 10 minutes of the film trying to work out if it would have actually been possible for men to pull a warship into dry dock.

Yeah, this had me baffled. Surely the point of a dry dock is you open the gates, flood it, pull the floating boat it, close the gates and pump it out (or wait for the tide to go out and then let the water out)

there’s no way any number of men would be able to drag a ship of that size into an empty dry dock.

It’s snow, not the bloody armageddon! Get a grip FFS.

Do those people actually need to go out though? I was supposed to be driving from Bristol to London tonight, as it’s not vital I get to London this weekend I’ve decided to cancel and stay in. It may only be a bit of snow, but the sensible option is to only travel if vital.

I’ve got a set of 32c cross tyres (maxxis mud wrestler iirc) on my cross bike on crest rims. went on no problem.

he’ll just settle for an undisclosed sum before it goes to court. He doesn’t want the case tested in court as then he can’t deny anything. If they can settle he can get the other party to sign an NDA.

hmm, not sure why i wouldn’t use one. If it’s good enough for cycling team cars then why not use the same system at home:

amazon lockers are live already round me – there’s one in a co op about 200 yards from my front door. only issue is they charge for delivering to it, so no supersaver delivery.

yodel delivered a parcel to me yesterday. they left it inside the wheelie bin outside my front door. bin collections are today. Had I not gone home last night said parcel would now be in landfill.

They’re all paying lip service to bikes but not many concrete policies. Jon Rogers and Marvin Rees also support the feckawful BRT2 scheme which will turn cycle lanes into bus lanes.

Not sure I’ve seen anything from Ferguson which says he does or he doesn’t. Come to think about it all I know from his campaign literature is that he’s been to an awful lot of other cities.

Serious question – if someone was accused of murder, would sworn testimony, a receipt for a weapon and a threatening email be enough to convict them?

If yes, fine

If not, all we are left with is

Well, it’s not as simple as that – they would have different burdens of proof required. In the UK (I’m not sure about the US so won’t post about it) murder would be a criminal conviction and you would have to prove it beyond reasonable doubt before conviction. Doping in sport would be a civil case and as such the burden of proof is lowered to the balance of probabilities. This doesn’t stop a murderer being convicted on witness testimony alone though.

I’m “racing” in seniors on Sunday. Will be on a big green singlespeed Karate Monkey cross bike

Me too – kinesis crosslight pro6. My main aim will not to come dfl like I did at the Southern Regional Champs in Jan this year… (actually, tell a lie I retired at the bell so was a dnf but i was way in last place at the time)

Great event.
Nice to see Steve peat being a very normal world champ. Down to earth, plastic cup of cider.
Thanks for the cider.

The cider (and pickled eggs) was courtesy of our team – wideopenmag.co.uk

We were disappointed by the amount of people who didn’t stop/take the hand up – they can’t all have been race leaders…

I like how on the architect’s website you can view construction drawings where they’re using a crane:

Glass Installation by Carl Turner Architects, on Flickr

The programme went to great lengths to say that they didn’t… tbh for the weight of material they were moving with the windows i think a crane would have been quicker and likely cheaper…

i stayed here about 3 weeks ago: http://www.apartamentosoliastur.es/esp/index.html in El Cotillo in Fuerteventura.

Was really good and i’d recommend it. El Cotillo is definitely not a touristy village but does have some really good local restaurants and bars. Only about 30 mins from Corralejo for all your 18-30s needs. You will definitely need to rent a car if you go there though.

the cable routing seems a bit odd – surely even in gravel racing you might have to shoulder the bike once in a while…

I’d recommend an olympus xa like this http://www.ffordes.com/product/12080915115481

compact rangefinder with good quality lens.

i did tour of flanders this year – the full distance. it wasn’t carnage at all, was good to be around other riders for the whole distance and the feed stops were well run and managed. I’d definitely recommend it.

@thepodge – make it known to the organisers of the current one, who if there is any competition, will come up with a way for it to be decided who organises the next one at the current one. if that makes any sense. basically, tell cheeky trails you want to do it and then you might have to compete against anyone else who wants to do it. be prepared for a thankless task though as can be seen from this thread.

oh and read this: http://www.aidanharding.com/2011/09/ssuk-and-the-elephants/%5B/url%5D

And yet existing cycle lanes take us exactly to the wrong place. That’s why I’d much rather overtake on the outside like “normal” traffic.

I’m always amazed by the amount of people who ride up filter lanes that go to ASL boxes and choose to just sit in the lane as it means they can put their foot on the kerb rather than the floor further forward. it also means other cyclists cant then get past them to fill the asl box as you’re supposed to.

in europe some of the sportives are like races (in fact they are, as they give out finishing results unlike over here). some of the fastest guys get appearance fees and and semi-pro by all rights. The big ones are used to get spotted for pro contracts – Laurens Ten Dam won the marmotte a few years ago and the top guys on that are grided.

or nibbles + basso vs the entire sky train, and after that nibbles vs froome for the final 500m.

the problem is the last 500m isn’t enough for him to even get 2nd off froome let alone build up enough of a lead for the tt. can’t see him getting away on port des bales and making it stick.

hmm, not sure there’s much point in either nibbles or cuddles attacking – they need about 4mins and 9mins respectively (all on this stage to keep the lead through the TT). it’s just too late unfortunately. Especially given the attack nibali did on the peyresourde yesterday – froome with the early chase and then when he went again and froome was knackered wiggins was fresh to chase him down again. (it was interesting to see Froome tired – maybe if he was on a different team he wouldn’t be able to keep up with nibali?)

I would have thought there would be tape on the BMC where there are gaps in the brake areas to reduce drag by a fraction.

they’re moving parts though – the tape would just come off.

on a slightly related topic i thought that the UCI banned all specifically aerodynamic things so how do they get away with brakes like that?

hmm, that ETA thing only actually pays for your transport back to your car/station etc. so you would still have to find a local taxi company who would take you and your bike.

i don’t really care anymore, not that i see it as a witch hunt though just that there’s never going to be a satisfactory resolution. The two outcomes:
1. Armstrong is convicted and stripped of all titles. He still goes to the grave shouting about it being a witch hunt and protesting his innocence.
2. Armstrong is acquitted. There’s a nasty taste in everyone’s mouth as the mud as been slung and the trial never got far enough for a conviction as he got some high powered friends involved.

you can take either 1 bottle of wine or 2 cans or beer in per person. take a bottle of wine each. also make sure it’s screw cap as you won’t be allowed your corkscrew…

also take a picnic as the food is pretty expensive, but you can take your own in.
