Which council is hiring a cycle officer? All the ones I deal with have just been given the axe! Councils see cycling as an easy budget cut I think.

Oh and if you want to enter you might be best off doing so in advance. Here are the details from the organiser

    All,

thanks for your interest in this event, I'm pleased to say that we've now got the park permit so the event will definitely be going ahead.

The race is in a weeks time; Wednesday 22nd, so we can finally start registering people properly for the event.

If you would like to enter the race, please send a payment of £2 via paypal to [removed the guys email address (not sure if he'd want it on a public forum) – email me if you want it (mail in profile)] – include your full name and something in the notes to show that it is for this event.

There aren't many rules for entry, but you won't be allowed to race without a helmet and two working brakes.

We may take entries on the day, but registering in advance will secure your spot as there are limited places available due to the short amount of time (and light) that we will have available.

On that note, we will need to move the whole event a little earlier than originally planned in order to get through all of the heats before it gets dark. The course should be setup by 5pm, so arriving then will give you some time to practise, but we may need to start racing as early as 6pm.

I'll try to send some more updates over the next week or so, until then, get registered!

    Taff

skidartist – i hope you reported the dog and the owner to the relevant authorities and the appropriate action was taken with the dog. if the owner has to carry round a first aid kit to patch up his dog's victims then there's something very wrong.

and remember that the 2.7% rate will be their standard variable rate, which is likely linked to the bank of england base rate which is currently as low as it will ever be so it might well go up.

spotted him this morning – body armour on the top half of his body with lycra shorts on and no knee/shin pads…

i think he needs it because he jumped every red light there was, it didn't make any difference to his journey though as i stopped at them all and still kept up with him.

if your work is offering voluntary redundancy your job isn't secure!

The first guys out (voluntary) normally do far better than those made redundant 6 months later when the cash has really started running out.

Think how much Cyclescheme are making out of all this for doing not very much at all!
I was hoping someone was going to pop up and say "no this is a gpvernment scheme to get more people out of their cars and onto bikes no private company is making fat profits from a government awarded contract" Wishful thinking on my part.

Cyclescheme aren't government appointed, they're just a private company who saw an opportunity to make some money by being an intermediary between companies who want to run cycle to work schemes and bike shops. The way the government have set up cycle to work, companies are able to purchase bikes directly and deal with setting up the employer agreement themselves, but cyclescheme are providing a service which does this for them. To the employers it is cost effective as it costs them nothing, to the employees they don't care as they still get their bike and the model cyclescheme have set up means the lbs takes the hit.

IMO if an LBS is going to add on 10% for using cyclescheme they shouldn't have signed up with cyclescheme in the first place as they knew the terms.

they're the perceived rules, mainly told by UK types who worship euro cyclists. see: http://theinnerring.blogspot.com/2010/08/man-you-look-so-euro_11.html

given that this is the first year they're running it i think your guess is as good as mine in terms of how full it will be.

course is likely to be the same as the bristol bike fest, map and profile here.

it's covered by civil law so they can't impose an unfair penalty, if you're so inclined offer them whatever the going rate for however long you were parked in a similar local public car park.

they've already said it'll be 4-5 laps of an 8-9km course. given the length i reckon it'll probably be pretty closely based on the cwm rhaeadr trail centre trail with an extra bit added in.

and the savings you'd make on tax during the hire period (for a lower rate tax payer) would be about £200 (inc national insurance savings) so the overall saving is £20. well worth it…

the only thing that irritates me about it is that they're being called "boris' bikes". The project was started when Ken was still mayor, all Boris did was not abolish it like most of the other projects Ken started.

the euro jerseys will be like a normalish jersey. the race day ones will be the ultra tight ones with special slippery material on shoulders and chest to reduce drag with more breathable/holey other bits. they will also be really thin and not last well, there's a reason why when road racers crash their lycra is in tatters – it's a much lighter weight material than normally used.

i'd be tempted to go into the vintage jewellery shop/stall in st nicks market and ask them for advice, much more likely to be able to help than a high street type jewellers.

sounds like you were following too closely if you couldn't stop in time. if you were driving a car (even without having a couple of beers) they (insurance co) would find in favour of the van driver 99/100 times.

oh, ok – thought all the armstrong related stuff was nike, sorry. still looks pretty fake to me though.

firstly refer to the thread a few weeks ago on wearing roadie team kit, secondly they're blatantly fake. will be on really poor quality material with a really poor fit.

also, note the giordana logo on the mellow johnny's kit – the real stuff is made by nike.
