How do you know that the price increased because of Evans? Surely it could have just been a coincidence?

It’s Iain Gray, not Ian is it not? He’s so anonymous that you couldn’t spell his name. :D

I’m not sure that Iain has ever had too much worthwhile to contribute, as he seems stuck in the old party political posturing which I find a big turn off. I’ve not heard enough of Ed to comment. I agree that both seem relatively quiet though.

Bung it in a drawer until you have a car that works with it. I have an iPod Classic with a 60GB hard drive that just stays in the car permanently plugged into the iPod connection. It still works perfectly at the moment, but even if the screen and battery don’t work, it could still perform this role perfectly, as it takes power from the car, and you choose tracks through the car stereo screen.

I don’t like the look of the current nano – seems to small to be usable to me. Some places might be doing good deals on clearance models of the previous one.

The alternative headline of “Some forests may be sold, to people who may or may not manage them well, but they won’t all be flattened as planning regulations and tree preservation orders would prevent that” isn’t quite so catchy though.

A few MPG lower here too, but I’m putting that primarily down to having the a/c on lots, the rear window heater, the heated mirrors etc, and spending a few minutes with the engine running in the drive every morning.

Saying that, on longer journeys it is a bit better, as I’m driving a bit more smoothly and slowly than in the dry, and using less acceleration than usual. Still getting mid 40s mpg out of the current tank, and reckon it’ll be 50+ when I trundle down the M6 to Lancs next week, as I’ll probably knock a little bit off my usual motorway cruising pace.

It’s a short detour along the Lymphoy track from the WoL I suppose (which is not particularly interesting at that section anyway). I normally cut up Waulkmill Loan if I’m dropping in to the parents’ for coffee, so I’ll sneak it in to my next ride there. Always keen to find an extra few hundred yards of singletrack. Thanks.

Cheers Northwind. I’ve never ridden that wee little path, and not walked it for about ten years. I’ll need to have a short detour next time I’m pedalling up the Water of Leith to my parent’s house (which is handily a few minutes away).

Chocolate Chute was completely awesome though, had to go back for a few extra goes

    Chocolate Chute?

Since the ice here on the north side of town has now been covered with a thin layer of snow, the Roseburn path is rideable again, so I reckon another trip up to the WoL to the Pentlands might be in order shortly. Sounds like it’ll just be up Poets and back down. I don’t have my google earth overlay handy, where is Chocolate Chute?

Looks like you’re blocking out the sun with the tyres in the first photo. I need to stop looking at fat bike threads (I actually thought this might be comparing waist size before and after Christmas, although that probably wouldn’t have been better). Quiet you lot, I do not need a fat bike.

Camels are big into their trance. You’d be amazed what goes on in the desert…

Are camel’s therefore the preferred payment method for Giant Trances? What about other bikes?

PS – Always paypal or cash for transactions I’ve been involved in.

I briefly thought about a 29er inbred for CX duty (has the advantage of disc brake mounts, pannier racks and slot dropout for occasional singlespeeding). I then saw some people claiming 30lbs for their 29er Inbreds with carbon forks, so I reckon it’ll be too heavy for a decent CX bike. Since I didn’t intend to run it with 29er MTB tyres on, I think I’ll stick to the original plan of a cross bike with discs and pannier mounts.

I’ve not ridden much recently as it’s pretty icy out, but I’m still using my bike for short trips across town, one of which was probably at around -9 or so last week.

I have some cycling trousers that I virtually never use, but have had on twice in the past few weeks. When you wear enough clothes, it’s not a problem – must be a good deal chiller at Iditarod etc. I’m using a buff over my face and neck when I set off, as the air you breathe in is hopefully then a bit warmer, so it’s not too cold when it hits your lungs. The buff gets a bit annoying sometimes though, so I drop it down below my mouth every now and again once I’ve warmed up.

I’m predominantly riding my singlespeed, so no gear cables to freeze. No frozen freeweel issues thus far, probably helped by the fact that the bike is kept on the communal landing when not in use, and the fact that it hasn’t been jet washed for a while.

I intentionally took Mrs PixelMix to the bike shop the last time I bought a new bike – it means she can’t complain later on.

She doesn’t mind as we have our own separate pots of money for things which aren’t for us both, and I use my cash for bikes.

Mind you, she still brings up that summer where I decided not to go for a summer holiday with her (she went with a friend instead as I wasn’t sure I would have a job shortly), but had spent £950 on a bike 7 months previously.

99% sure you can buy the QR lever separately for your existing clamp. Check some of the big online shops that do Hope stuff.

Most types will fit, although you might find some oddities.

Do you have a brand new Inbred? I think the design of the dropout is slightly different on those, so you might want to dig around on the site a bit, but I’m sure the On One tug will still work.

Surly Tuggnuts are the Rolls Royce standard, but I’m not sure they make much different and the On-One thing is adequate.

Yes. It will prevent your wheel from moving forward under heaving braking (the forces exerted on disc brake rotors can pull the axel forward). I use one on the drive side, which is generally considered to be sufficient.

Look at all the roadies getting uptight. It’s ok to admit that road cycling is for fit but fairly skill-less people. Just like dodgeball is for people with two left feet or badminton is like tennis for people with bad reactions.

Except that road riding down an alpine pass at 60mph or in a bunch sprint does require a fair amount of skill, not mention the tactics required for a long day in the saddle.

Pretty sure that quick feet are handy for dodgeball, and reactions are incredibly useful in badminton when the shuttlecock is coming towards you from a smash.

Some of these are brilliant P20. The scary thing is though, that these idiots are on the roads. That idiot in the Leon shouldn’t have bothered trying. If you can’t stand on the hill, you aren’t going to be able to drive up it.

In the first video, I can’t believe that none of the drivers seemed to take their foot of the brake and stick it in first and let the wheels match the movement. No evidence of any of them trying to slow themselves with the nice snow any the side either.

It’s amazing that most of the cars in the first clip were 4x4s. This supports my theory that some “soft roader” drivers don’t realise that just because they can’t get moving on snow and ice, they can’t defy the laws of physics to slow down any better.

The players may not be very fit, but you can’t deny the skill involved.

Can’t argue with that. On a “personality” basis, Phil would be a worthy winner. He has achieved more in his “sport” than the others, and is probably amongst the better known there.

    pixelmix

In his own little niche specialism of a niche sport he’s very good.

Road racing isn’t considered a niche sport in many countries though. I think Hoy was onto to something with his comments. I suspect more people have heard of Cavendish in France than in the UK.

    Anyway, darts? Sport?

    About 15 here.

Far less than I would like to, but it’s pretty icy out there, and riding 2.0″ tyres on the road is pretty boring. Now snow on ice, so maybe that will be a bit more rideable for next week…

As above, there is that DMR one. Does the Cotic Roadrat not come with one too (it has track end style dropouts)? You could try one of those if you can get your mitts on one.

Maybe they don’t have a grit bin on their own street? Not every street has one, and you wouldn’t want to be carrying it in your hands for half a mile. It would be a bit like that kenco(?) 100% less packaging advert.

“The Volvo’s steering is almost completely weightless, very uninvolving to drive and the interior is a bit mleh as well.
I am pretty sure the Golf R is 2wd.”

I agree that others drive better than the c30, but might be worth a shot. Can be some good deals.

Pretty sure the Golf R is 4wd, hence the price difference over the Scirocco R.

Subaru Impreza if you want 5drs and 4wd?

    pixelmix

Does it have to be 4wd and 5dr?

Scirocco R is better value than a Golf R, although does without the 4wd. Scirocco 2.0 GT is the same engine as the golf GTI too.

New C30 is nice, as someone said above.

1 series coupe? (due for a facelift next year I think).

The funicular is handy at Cairngorm for your first run (it is busy so not worth getting too often), and when the snow is good you can get a really long run down from top to bottom. Cairngorm shuts fairly often though as it is exposed to the West, so gets a battering by the wind, and they can struggle to keep the road safe when the snow is blowing across it.

At the last minute, if Cairngorm is shut, it’s not TOO bad a drive to get to the Lecht.

Glenshee is the handiest for Edinburgh, and you can get out of the car and onto a tow quicker there. Some of the runs are a bit of an effort to get to, so have a slightly more remote feel (if that’s your thing).

I have a 3G and had a 4 for work for a few months. 4 is noticeably faster. Camera is much better, and the screen is great. I’m struggling on with the 3G for now, but I wouldn’t want to get a 3 now and plan on keeping it for 2 years.

Apple used to do about 8% off new models for students, and I think that stills applies. Nothing off the refurb stuff. Your Apple store will tell you, or you can go through to a student page on the website.

I always buy my computers during the “Back to School” offer in September, as you get the discount and an iPod for next to nothing too (which I sell on eBay if I don’t need it). I did this once when a student, and then got Mrs PixelMix to do it last time around as she is a teacher.

Ace, apparently my Scirocco is 1379kg “unladen”, although I think that manufacturers need to include the weight of an average driver and a 90% fuel tank in that figure? (VW brochure seems to suggest so).

I weigh bugger all, so I’m off to do doughnuts in this car park. Anyone got directions?

The Scirocco figure would seem to suggest that some Golfs would sneak under the limit too.

Apple also offload them through their own website. Stock changes all of the time.

Are you/your spouse a teacher etc? You can get decent discounts off new ones if you are.

The price of suspension is high maintenance requirements and limited life spans after you have already paid a premium for the bike. Some forks have 20 hour service intervals.

That’s my excuse for NEEDING a singlespeed rigid bike too. :D

PS – I know 2.3in isn’t fat! Will get the measuring tape out tonight to see if these size up marginally bigger than the On-Ones. I don’t think you’ll get a proper “fat” tyre in though.
