I have a Hope QR on one bike which works perfectly.

I have a KCNC one on the other bike which is very light, but isn’t accurately manufactured, so it is a pain to get set up right. Once the tightness is set up now, it seems okay though.

+1 for Canyon Nerve XC. A friend just picked one up (XC 8.0) – good value for money. If unsure on sizing, they have a UK sales/service team who can advise.

Spesh or Trek from a LBS might be better if he is nervous about warranty issues or servicing it himself though.

Sorted something yet Colin? I presume this is for selling a flat? Let me know if you want a fee quote and some details – I can ping you an email today if you like.

Ouch, a lot of grumpy buggers here today.

The OP asked a question, some people provided some answers. If you don’t like it, don’t use it.

Personally, I find it a useful way of keeping up to date with goings on, and have found out about events (including bike events), deals etc through it which I otherwise might not have known about.

Its very easy to hit 40+ down there. Its not the length of the hill its thE steepness –

Tsk tsk. What a waste of some fine rooty singletrack on Beech Avenue.

Pint of beer to the first person to do 40mph down the path on either side of the hill (without face planting), or alternatively 40mph to the first person to do 40mph up the hill.

Dales are pretty good in my experience. Bending over backwards to get my bike fixed at the moment for me. Easy to get to, as 30 seconds off the M8.

If you can’t think of the name, is that really who you want to market with?!

I’m not racing this weekend (arguably I didn’t “race” last weekend, I just minced around on some trails, mostly on my face or with a foot down), but I do love a good racing post before the weekend. Bring it back!

Jimmy – we stay at Barnsoul once a year in their wooden chalet things, and are doing that again this weekend. If you end up pitching your tent there, say hello. We’ll probably have a white van, a Land Rover and maybe a Scirocco parked outside.

If it makes you feel better, I’ve handle similar trouble with my XT recently.

I have a LH x9 shifter in the parts box from my old bike if you want it? It has never suffered from the problem you describe. Drop me an email if you need it – £18 posted.

Thanks both. Your description matches the knock I’ve noticed when lifting the bike by the saddle, so I suspect it may be the shock bushing, although I can’t feel any movement there when I wedge my finger in beside the shock bushing, so I’ll get the chainset off later to confirm once and for all.

Interesting. Whereabouts in Dalmeny? Was he a walker or a resident/employee in the estate?

I ride through there quite often in the evenings and never had any trouble, but then I do tend to ride on the estate roads, and only occasionally use the path that comes along the golf course and along the front.

When you can actually feel the cleat disengaging at the bottom of the pedal stroke? (I’m not sure where this fits on the continuum).

Bumpty bump. I bought from CRC at the end of February and my bank just called me having stopped 3 attempted transactions. Bank of Scotland seem on the ball since no money has actually left my account.

I rarely use this card, so likely to be CRC hole that got me. (Usual caveat that it could have been scammed elsewhere applies).

Be alert folks – I bought stuff a month and a half ago, and the attempted transactions were only this week.

Possibly not required if you ride smoothly on smoothish trails and have a sufficiently short chain and a short cage rear mech correctly adjusted.

You could always try it for a bit, and if you keep losing the chain, add a guard later? The superstar xc one is quite good value.

I was reminded of this thread on my ride this evening.

Sunshine meant I decided to ride on the road round Arthur’s Seat rather than across the track through the middle (bit busy out with walkers). Road riding on a SS MTB is a real bore.

I later came up to a 90 degree turn through an archway (at the end of a cycle path) at walking pace, only to encounter a fair weather jogger. I stopped instantly (although I could easily have ridden round him), but he proceeded to fall over his own feet and blame me for riding too fast. Idiot.

None of this ever happened before the clocks changed. Grr.

I’d be seriously tempted by a 100mm Canyon if buying tomorrow – cracking value. A friend has just orderd their 120mm XC bike, so I’m keen to see what the finish is like on it.

How you finding that Rocky Mountain Dougal?

That was a bit of a thread resurrection there. Mrs PixelMix created the following 3 course meal last week:-

Bloody mary shots with avocado toast things
Risotto (with white wine and mushrooms)
Selection of sorbets for dessert (including one made from malibu and some fruit ones).

She insists that she hadn’t realised there was alcohol in every course until I pointed it out. Not that we’re alcoholics or anything. Hic.

I won’t make those times, but I’m heading up to the Pentlands with a friend tonight, so will give you a cheery wave if we pass. If regular Wednesday night rides are on again, I’ll maybe be up for next week.

Don’t forget your lead boots. It be breezy out there.

Sounds like either QR not done up tight enough (unlikely as you’ve had it apart and back together again) or the cup n cones not quite right.

I’d say you have just paid in using your 2011-2012 allowance. I doubt if your ISA provider will be willing to move the dates around, but you never know…

Geesh, a lot of easily wound up people here. Whilst I might not agree with lots of bikes / bike bits, I can see why some people might like them – each to their own.

Out of the list so far, the only ones I really don’t get at all are littering and blocking the trail needlessly. Grrrr.

just another bullshit day, made up by the card companies

    Christian ‘festival’ actually – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothering_Sunday

I’ll be riding in the afternoon and having the folks round for dinner. Win win.

But if i dont have insurance, what can the insurance company do?

If you don’t have insurance, his insurers are entitled to pursue you personally (as opposed to raising the claim against your insurers).

I tend to prefer buying bikes cash, but my current bike is on a 0% credit card, and will be paid off prior to the 0% period ending. I got a good deal on it at the time, and as it was the last bike in stock in my size, I would have otherwise had to stump up the extra cash for the 2011 model at full price (and at an increased price too).

Nothing wrong with credit when (a) you know you can pay it off within a sensible time frame and (b) it doesn’t end up costing you more than you would have paid cash. It is when (a) or (b) isn’t true that it is time to walk away.

Is title solely in her name? If so, no SDLT.

However, your bank will probably not let you take title solely in her name if both names are on the mortgage. At the very least, this needs to be intimated to the bank, and lenders are currently very nervous about anything out of the ordinary.

Charge Knife easily under 250g (Spoon is just above). You can pick the Knife up for £40 and they sell well on the classifieds, so you could try it, and sell it if you don’t get on.

Anthem rider here. The suspension design seems to work well (little pedal bob whether pro pedal is on or off), and it is a reasonably light frame (they barely saved any weight with the carbon version). People with small frames get bike weight down to 22lbs without trying too hard.

Mud clearance isn’t brilliant, although I’ve got a 2.25″ Racing Ralph at the back with sufficient clearance. The hole by the suspension in the front triangle collects mud, but it’s not a disaster.

Can’t comment on the Superlight, but I’d happily go Anthem again.

PS – The X1 frame is exactly the same as the X4 etc, so bear that in mind if you stumble across a bargain (e.g if buying an X4 and selling the bits).

On balance, sunshine and daylight is for the best, but one of the paths I use on my way home from a night ride isn’t really suitable for the day time, as it is too narrow with blind bends, and it will be a nightmare dodging the dog walkers. Guess I’ll need to revert to the boring wide tarmac path instead for that section. :?

Another SXCer here. Great course at Kirroughtree as ever, although it felt like it had slightly more singletrack than last year (maybe just me?) The bike didn’t enjoy it so much though – loads of chainsuck and couldn’t get it out of the big ring at the end. Think I’ve got a bit of cleaning to do.

Those muddy downhill sections were a hoot. I somehow held on, but I’ve no idea how. :-)

Oh – no one told me. Or my 2-year old Candys I’ve been using for touring & commuting. Is “instantly” somewhere around the 8,000 mile -9,000 mark then?

My two year old Candys fell apart. I got home, but a new bearing on them, bolted em back together, and they are as good as new. I should have checked the bearings before. :)

The new range is supposed to be better built too, and now has a 5 year warranty. I’d definitely recommend Crank Bros if you want one make for road and MTB.

Ah, right, so it’s the HOPE HOOPS PRO3 SP-XC6 I’d need for 6 bolt rotors. Looks like an option.

Will have a chat with you when I have some pennies together Mark.

Hmm, interesting. What are the thoughts on 3 bolt discs?

    pixelmix

True. Maybe 3 hours door to door if riding up the Water of Leith to get there. TJ will be able to show you some minor deviations.

A lot of the bits on Druidh’s google overlay map are best avoided in the wet, but will give you a few ideas.
