Think that's the same one as I've got on a T4 camper van/Caravelle. I use a Dension cable, cradle bought of fleabay and it works great.

Aberdovey (Aberdyfi)Is a quaint seaside village with good beach and dunes if its a bit windy. Lovely riding up in the hills just behind plus 20 mins from the Climax trails north of Machynlleth and the more rugged Mach 1,2 and 3 South of the town. Harlech castle and Barmouth just up the coast as well.

Used to work for a German company in Shropshire, they foolishly had a brainwave to curb drinking at the works do by just having a 1 hour free bar before the food!!! Cue loads of completely bladdered blokes with several pints lined up before their turkey dinner. It was one of the few times we saw the German board of directors in the flesh so one guy off the shop floor decided it would be hilarious to grab the mic that the General Manager was due to use to make a speech and do a Basil Fawlty don't mention the war act/ Nuremburg rally speech on the stage while we were eating. The Germans thought it was hilarious but the English management didn't see the funny side and the guy was subsequently sacked, the evening was rounded off by the Sales Manager's wife pouring a pint over the MD's head which didn't do his career much good either. Christmas parties were banned threafter.

God that takes me back!! I can still smell the aroma of this stuff even though I gave up Enduros in 1990. I would have thought it was a bit too power sapping for cycling, there is a definite knack to getting just the right amount of grease into the chain pins,, don't just dip a cold chain into it as the wax just coats the side plates which doesn't do anything much. If you lie the chain on top of the cold solid wax and heat very slowly the chain heats up as well and then fish it out when it drops into the liquid, holding over the tin to let it drip. Wipe with the proverbial oily rag and there you go.

Go for it. I've been twice and was on the Alp D'Huez in 2001 when Lance blew the race apart. The atmosphere is fantastic but you need to be on the set piece climbs in the Alps or Pyrennees hours if not days beforehand to get a good vantage point. Camper van is the best option for flexibility. Have you tried Norfolk Line for the ferry, believe it or not last year we paid £39 for the 2 of us with a T4 VW van return, Dover to Dunkerque.

Mr Agreeable I am definitely not saying don't bother, if TQ organisers had said that 20 years ago we wouldn't have had a sport and this silly law would have been the winner. What I am advising is caution and creative thinking as the law isn't going to be changed for many years if ever. The last Transport Minister to look at it was Glenda Jackson!!! Also prospective organisers need to be aware of how what they are doing could be construed and that participants (don't call them competitors) signing a disclaimer has been proven to be not worth the paper its written on.
A local example to me, the Holme Valley Scouts have for the last 3-4 years organised a fundraising ride which has a mass start and finishing positions and times have been posted on their website afterwards, it uses several bridleways and they have no idea of the legality of what they are doing. This year there was a tragic accident in which someone died. The mind boggles about the implications of this.
ajf As I have said about 3 times, this law only applies to cycling on bridleways not roads, RUPPS, Byways, Dual Carriageways etc, thats how barmy it is.

    Mr Agreeable.
The reason the claims against TQ failed was exactly because we had done our homework and ensured there was no implication of these events being construed as a race. Having Colin Palmer of IMBA on our side was also helpful, what I am pointing out is that it is very possible for a naiive organiser to put on an event and decide to publish finishing positions and times and even give prizes for the winners without knowing the implications. Ignorance of the law is no defence. What would be more damaging to organisers wanting to run events than someone being personally sued for a 6 or 7 figure sum for an innocent mistake?

it's been coming through loud and clear from the start, to be honest. Do you know of any mountain bike events where someone has sued the organisers then?

Yes, at least 2 Trailquests whereby the insurance companies of self employed competitors have tried to recover damages to pay off policies and AFAIK a guy who met a FE van in N Wales in a race in Clocaenog also claimed, sorry for being vague but the TQ ones are definites and failed due to the non-race argument. It isn't the malice of the riders but their insurance companies who employ people to minimise their liability that is the worry.

Until Mr A crashes, can't work for several weeks or worse, tries to claim critical injury insurance to pay the mortgage, you see where this is heading??

    Mr Agreeable.
This was the sole reason that the man vs horse vs bike race was stopped in the late 90's as this arcane law was dug up. Just look at the IMBA and CTC Websites for further info. I am not in any way a killjoy but organisers of these events need to be aware of how their events could look in law if they are to avoid prosecution or worse personal liability if there was an accident in what may be proved to be an illegal event.

I totally agree its a mad law but it is a law and should a body such as FE or Till Hill or anyone else for that matter condone breaking the law by publishing a league table based on timed runs, they are liable to be prosecuted. Of course anyone wanting to privately time themselves is perfectly at liberty to do so, it is the competitive element of publishing times that tips the balance. As I commented earlier, this stupid law doesnt apply to runners, horseriders, car rallys and motorbike enduros. The system can also be used for road cycling such as spotives without issue. IT'S JUST BIKES ON BRIDLEWAYS.

Having organised Trailquests and served on the governing body, I can speak from personal experience. Trailquests use SI dibbers not for measuring the speed of competitors but to add up their scores based on where they have been. The only mountainbike orienteering discipline which decides the winner on the basis of the fastest speed is MTBO which has to be held in areas without bridleways or operate a marshalling system whereby competitors have to carry thier bikes across them, mad but true. I agree that many marathon events run along bridleways and also publish timed results which is pretty dodgy but yet to be tested by law. It will only take some clever bu££er to try it on and these events will be stuffed. I also worry about things like offroad Duathlons as again the fastest time wins, the organisers seem blissfully unaware of the law and run the risk of being fined or worse for their pains.

    Racing on bridleways

It is forbidden to hold a cycle race or trial of speed on a bridleway, a blanket ban introduced by the 1988 Road Traffic Act. However, it is permitted to hold a motor race on a bridleway – or even a footpath – which is clearly inequitable.

CTC believes that this is an unnecessarily blunt means of regulating cycle events, and that the relevant section of the RTA 1988 should be replaced by suitable regulations to enable organised cycle events to be held on, and cross, bridleways.

Apart from the points about shared trail usage, it would also be illegal for any of the centres which run along or even cross bridleways to operate such a scheme. This would be easily construed as racing or time trialling which was outlawed in a 19th century act of Parliament which our current bunch of wasters can't be bothered repealing despite it being perfectly legal to race cars, motorbikes, on foot, on horseback along them. It is becoming more and more dodgy to even publish times for mass participation rides and is one of the reasons why the likes of the Trans Wales has to have long liason stages which are untimed.

Still got some copies of Maximum Mountainbike every issue seemed to have Guy Kesteven on the cover, did he ever close his mouth? They did a profile of me in their last ever issue. Showed Chipps GK et al around Machynlleth trails for the first time as I specced out the Mach 1,2 and 3 routes as well as showing Dafydd Davis the potential at Nant Yr Arian which got FE off its backside to make those trails, god I'm old but glad to think I've retained my humility.

Might be too much of a fag but the bike show is imminent at, I think, the NEC Birmingahm. I bought an Oxford Products one there and it has been superb. The advantage of going to the show is that you can go from one stall to another and virtually name your price, I bought mine virtually half price.

Thanks for the offer ian, I have since found some info from the Llieda website. Lots of riding signed but I was more interested in what it was really like, there seems to be a lot of out and back riding rather than circular routes, maybe the 3,000 metre peaks are a bit of a barrier.

Just read your post re housing grant, if the Millhouse one is the development on the old umbrella factory on Manchester Road, I would jump at it. This was originally, pre credit crunch, a 130 house project which stopped dead about 12 months ago. About 20 executive houses have sold for c:£300k and a few smaller ones are occupied. Given its location, backing on to the River Don, it will not be surrounded by other developments and Millhouse is really quite a nice place if you like it quiet. The commute down the Trans Pennine Trail would probably only work in dry weather as it gets very dirty in the wet with a black cinder surface, however it is possible to get to Hillsborough off road or via Outibridge on quietish roads then pick up the tram to wherever. Penistone is also connected via train to Sheffield and Huddersfield depending on how quickly you need to get there.

I live in Millhouse Green and it's fine. Good cross section of housing and biking. TPTrail yards away so off road access to Wharncliffe and up to Woodhead, Cut Gate,Langsett etc. Also brilliant pub The Huntsman which is in Thurlstone, I run the Tuesday quiz, good selection of real ale and barmy locals. Penistone may offer cheaper housing but not so good on the pub front. let me know if you want me to keep an eye out on the property front.

It may duplicate your route but why not try getting the route guide to Sarn Helen, a few friends have done it and found it contains enough off road for most.
