Should have thought of SI Entries Event Listbefore, shows all events with SI entries. Tend to be the better run ones as well, but pricy.

Camino Del Cid 870km from Burgos to Valencia might be worth a look as are several on this[/url] website. Del Cid is number 40 on the Rutas – de Gran Recorrido section. I can vouch for the routes in the Els Ports area of Valencia region. Enjoy

Do you mean Jeff Jones? I think most people have imported them from the States.

There’s a list on the British Triathlon website if you look hard enough. High Terrain events do a series but the first one which is at Whinlatter has closed entries as of yesterday. 🙁

Cheeky Monkey, it must have struck you as ironic that the trails that STA did build were used extensively for the X Country and Downhill races in the recent British Schools Games, presumably with the FC’s blessing. In fact I was there and my questioning of how they had overcome the legallities of racing on the bridleway which cuts across the end of the carpark just by the finish line seemed to fall on deaf ears of the FC bod who was there glad handing the politicians and local dignitaries who were swanning about there.

Did they not tell you this when you booked them in? I don’t think they would lie.

Your question about the amount of single track and fire road indicates that you need to better understand the nature of the event. If you can visualise 15 or so checkpoints scattered over a very wide area of North Wales (about the size of 11/2 OS 1:50,000 maps) you have about 48 hours to get to as many checkpoints as you can including sleeping, eating etc. To get them all involves route finding and optimising the amount of climbing down to about 23,000 feet and riding about 140 miles so it’s not easy.(I know i did just that) The question regarding singletrack etc is entirely dependant on your choice of route, if you wanted to do a lap of the Climaxx trail in Dyfi forest, you could but it wouldn’t get you any more checkpoints, if you want to ride 10 miles along tarmac lanes to avoid a climb up and over a big hill, you can. It’s a matter of deciding what you want out of the event. Think of it as the organiser giving you some hints as to where some good riding is, if you chose to go there.

Try this one, if the trails are as good as the one we went to at Els Ports, you won’t be disappointed.

Thanks for explaining point 2, my email is a work one and is Microsoft Outlook, this is where I have most problems as I have to type fairly lengthy e mails for my job.

Just goes to show how much of a numpty I am, I don’t really understand either of your replies. Is Thunderbird a joke, I was really after a solution to this as it is frustrating to have to undo and retype stuff. I use Firefox on my desktop but Outlook on my laptop if that helps

I used to live on a farm which organised these corporate shooting days, I volunteered to do some beating when they were short one Saturday morning, turned up in my bright red motocross jacket and was given a few funny looks by the rest dressed in Barbour green, there was no way I was going to blend into the scenery with those idiots waving shotguns in my general direction. 🙂

+1 For the Youth Hostel, very good quality and in the grounds of the Abbey, plenty of parking too. We are there with a group of 40 from our Fell Running Club in 3 weeks so don’t try booking it on the 19th-20th. If you are there that weekend, I’m taking a group out for 30 miles around Fylingdales on bikes on the Saturday, you are welcome to join us.

Having seen the Devils Rock video and as a recent convert, the Star Wheelers will be more up his street. Rides are usually 15-20 miles on decent trails, group size is about 15 and pace is sedate. Nothing likely to kill him.

Trekster, that second photo looks like you are kite surfing which could be the answer to the joys of riding up hill 🙂

His best option is to go onto the Huddersfield Star Wheelers forum which has a list of mountainbike rides every Saturday morning at 10.00 starting from various points all within 5 miles of Almondbury. If he gets on with this, he can join for a few quid and go out every week.

Sorry gran, poor choice of words. What I was getting at is that it doesn’t make any difference whether you are pushing or riding the bike. I understand that the guy who lives at the end of the BW is anti everything and also knows the law. Strangely for round here he is also just as aggressive to horse riders hence the barriers at the junction of BW and FP. The council admit they made a cock up with the downgrading but seem powerless to undo it.

I haven’t seen the MBR route but if it takes in the bit described by Simon (we call it the b@stard hill) they are being irresponsible in publishing it. gran- you will still get an earful even if pushing your bike as it is still illegal to do so and the guy knows it. The history is that the guy won an order to downgrade the BW section from the A616 which runs parallel to the TPT because it ran through his garden, what the council didn’t spot was that the new footpath ran between the end of the Thurlstone Moor BW and the TPT thus making a cul de sac of the BW, they have been trying to upgrade this short bit for about 10 years. I got this from mate who is the ROW officer in Barnsley.
Stragely, the bit from the A616 is marked as a BW on the 50,000 OS but a FP on the 25,000 and signed as such on the ground.

I wonder how the Chinese cope with having just one time zone across the entire country? Given that if we are to believe the hype, they work 24/7 for a bowl of rice a year, the concept of day and night doesn’t apply. There must be at least 3-4 hours difference in sunrise-set from West to East so some must be permenantly getting up in the dark or is so much of the industry concentrated in one area for it not to matter?

gran- be careful on the footpath-bridleway across Thurlstone Moor, the guy at the house is anti-everything and knows the legallities of that litle bit of footpath. The council has been trying to sort this out for years but not had any success.

Have you tried Planet X, they imported quite a bit of stuff direct from Italy, certainly cranksets and stems, not sure about wheels though. You may be lucky.

Is the steerer aluminium/steel or carbon? There are guides available for this which means the blade is running down a narrow slot ensuring a perpendicular cut, they are worth getting if you do a lot of this. If not and the steerer is metal mark it using a thick spacer ring and use a fine toothed hacksaw and go carefully. For carbon, take it to the shop armed with biscuits.

I’m running an Alfine 11 speed on a Scandal hardtail and it is fine as far as range of gearing is concerned, 34t chainring and 18t sprocket for general riding or 32 x 20 when fully laden with camping gear on the Welsh Ride Thing or Pennine Bridleway trip I did in May. The initial jumping out of gear seems to have settled down and it only occasionally skips. Having it serviced ATM so hopefully it will be fine after this. BTW its fewer gears not less 😕

I bought some of these and tried running them on my Stans rims with plenty of wheel milk in and following the shaking routine to the letter, they leaked wheel milk like a colander, I’ve never seen a sidewall so porous, it looked as though I’d had about 100 punctures. Also be careful of sidewall strength on some of these so called Tubeless Ready tyres, I had a Specialized “The Captain” roll off the rim causing a fairly nasty over the bars incident. IMO Maxxis LUST and Conti UST are the safest bet but they are heavier than most.

Did I mention I live 2 miles from Langsett?
It has been raining horizontally for 48 hours, I would imagine the ground is quite dry as the wind is so strong the the rain is not reaching it 😉

Another thought, with the extortionate cost of insurance, I know several people who have had driving lessons and passed their test (as birthday presents etc) then can’t afford the thousands of pounds to buy and insure a car or motorbike. Is it sensible that they can drive after several years of having no practice and possibly having forgotten all that the lessons and test taught them?

Rock Swings by Paul Anka is a classic album, Enter Sandman by Pat Boone has to be heard to be believed.
For proper covers, Rythyms Del Mundo from Buena Vista Social Club is very good.
