Why would anyone in their right mind wear a Led Zeppelin T shirt?

The best chains are Almax, I’d recommend buying a lock from them as well. How you carry it around is up to you.

The MK2 Laguna had a really bad reputation for faults which meant the later ones didn’t sell very well, hence Renault dropped them from the UK. The MK3, which is what your coupe should be, is OK.

I’ve just sold my 09 Laguna estate. Bought it in 2011 and put 70,000 miles on it over four years, the only thing that ever needed fixing was a gummed up windscreen washer. The only reason I sold it was I bought a Caddy to cart the bikes around.

If it’s the 4000S II, info on rolling resistance vs pressure here:

    http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews/continental-grand-prix-4000s-ii-2014

Essentially you should be able to run any sensible pressure without it slowing you down much.

Interesting link. My own pressure preferences are:

    23mm/25mm – 120psi
    28mm – 100psi
32mm – 80psi (is use these on the crosser on the road)

Go for it, but don’t get sucked into the Apple infrastructure. You’ll need a new email address which will be something@me.com, you’ll be prompted to create this during setup.

Install the Google apps your used to and use them, this makes it a doddle to swap back at a later date. Keep your existing Gmail address and use the Gmail app, only use the Apple mail app for your me.com mail. Same for calendar etc.

Don’t put music into iTunes, don’t put pictures (or anything else) into iCloud, you can use Google drive for this. Basically, think what you’re doing and don’t use any apps on the Apple device that you can’t get on Android.

I never had a problem with servicing Egg Beaters, a squirt of grease in the end cap from time to time and an occasional rebuild. I found the bars wore quite badly underneath and they wear grooves in shoes unless you run the Crank Bros metal plates. Never had one fail though.

It’s been a while since I used them. Between wifey and I we’re a mix of Shimano and Ritchey on the mountain bikes now, Mrs P uses Ritchey on her road bikes too. I’ve had one XTR fall apart, it was a couple of months old. I’ve had an XT lock up on a ride, never had a problem with a Ritchey though. Other people I know swear by Time pedals.

I’ve been with road clubs for over 30 years but very rarely ride with my current club now. I will ride out to whatever cafe they’re going to, have a chat then ride back via a different route. The reason is that club riders used to either racers or ex racers and they had half an idea how to ride in a group and handle a bike. These days it’s full of people who are totally clueless. The people on the front are the regulars, the people behind are the three abreast rabble which are, quite frankly an embarrassment.

I sometimes see Alex Dowsett if I’m out on the road bike, he uses a cafe I frequent. Best spot belongs to a friend, Dowsett, Cav when he was World Champion and four other riders on the Sky team. She asked Cav for a picture and got Dowsett to take it.

I’ve just done my first single speed and it’s a 29er!! Research says somewhere around 51 (ish) inches*. I had a 30t front going spare so paired it with a 17t rear, which seems to work quite well except on the road, where it’s too low.

    * gear inches are teeth on the front – divided by teeth on the back – times the wheel size

    So for me, 30/17*29=51.17

Do a Google for gearcalc.xls, ratios at a glance.

I’ve been in the garage experimenting and have found:

Cable cutters: leave a sharp edge, which is what this is all about.

Nail clippers: couldn’t get low enough so they still left a sharp edge, not as bad as cable cutters, but you still cut yourself. Finished off with a needle file and the finish was perfect.

Side cutters: not bad. I couldn’t get them into the end of the tie so there was a still a small sharp edge. Finished off with a needle file.

Twisting: the best initial results but it leaves a raised bobble which could slice a finger. Finished off with a needle file.

Toenail clippers: found these in the bathroom cabinet, the ones that look like small pliers. Got nicely into the end of the cable tie and left a smooth finish. The quickest out of the lot as no finishing with a file needed. I’ve just been round all the bikes and trimmed the cable ties with them.

The best fitting shoes I’ve got are a pair of Specialized wide fit road shoes, I managed to get someone in the US to get them for me. Unfortunately Specialized don’t import any of their wide fit shoes to the UK, I don’t think they import them to Europe. I tried some Giro HV’s last week but too narrow on the toe box, why do shoe manufacturers think everyone needs winkle pickers?

Take bikes and ride some of the course.

The best stage I’ve seen was Ventoux a couple of years ago. Nowhere near the mountain, we were camping near Vaison La Romain and intended watching from the shade of the trees at the sprint point in Malaucene. So, take a back road to the edge of town, the road is already blocked, Gendarmes let us through and we pedal off. Lots of bored spectators line the road and all start clapping and cheering as we pass. A few miles later we get to the green barriers for the sprint, the green PMU glove people had already been round the crowd and the noise of several hundred banging the barrier was incredible. I told wifey to sprint for the line and we got a massive cheer.

Don’t put the 15’s on. Save up for some 19’s and a lowering kit.

Find a shorter stem… Seriously! A long(er) TT and short stem combo will inspire more confidence on steeper/techier sections than a shorter TT with a longer stem.

Isn’t always the answer, some people genuinely do need a shorter top tube and a short stem. My wife is good example of someone like this, very long legs means a shorter upper body and arms. She’s 5’8 and I’m 6’1, there is 10mm difference in our respective saddle heights. Her road bikes are all custom with a 56 seat tube and 52 top tube, if you work in S,M and L this is large frame in height and a short one in length. After owning a few mountain bikes she’s finally found that’s a reasonable fit, a Specialized Fate. This is large frame with the stem changed for 50mm, riser bars and inline post.

    Take the hardtail.

I’m going. Wifey and I will be easy to spot, we’re the early fifties couple wobbling around at the back on expensive carbon hardtails. The hills are fairly steep going up, I’m expecting plenty of climbing, not too technical decents and nice views, I like the area. Following the ride I’ll be going over to Bridges youth hostel and camping in their grounds with food and beer in the pub, home on Monday.

I got T boned by a Pizza Hut moped. Would have been early 90’s, riding home from the pub, did a right turn into my road and a moped came tearing through some bushes, across the pavement and took me out. We both hit the floor, both got up at the same time, I said something like “I’m going to kill you” and he ran.

I can’t remember being so miffed. I managed to swing the moped into a lamp post and attempt to break anything on it that was breakable. The Pizza Hut bloke was nowhere in sight, I swear I would have killed him if he came back.

It it’s anything like the grey squirrels here an air rifle won’t do much unless you get a clean head shot, even then you need to able to rush the bstard and hit it with something heavy. Best thing is a cross bow.
