I’d be finding a version of AOSP to put on it. I don’t much like the CM releases, but I find the plain ‘vanilla’ interface nice to use. I’m sure someone will have built a version for it.
pipnet1Free MemberWorks, but enjoy the death that follows the ring jumping out at the most inconvenient moment.
My SS needs a half-half link. I’ve got a half-link chain on it, but its JUST too tight to get on, or too loose depending if you have one extra link.
pipnet1Free MemberReal shock to read this. Like many have already said, this guy is a part of my MTB childhood, right from my mum buying me MBUK to keep me entertained round the shops when I was 10 all the way back in ’95.
RIP. Thoughts with his family and friends.
pipnet1Free MemberHave to say Aimee was getting on my nerves by the end, but hardly complaint worthy. As others have said, it was nice to have some people who knew what they were on about.
Currently watching the moguls, which is an exciting event being made rather dull by the commentary.
pipnet1Free MemberI’ll back the pot luck theme. I’ve had several sets of Avid brakes. Juicy 3s were excellent for 3 years through all weathers, Juicy 5s I had were horrible, Elixir1 (I think) were brilliant for about 2 weeks, then slowly died.
I found that once they ‘went off’ nothing would get them back to feeling like they did. Tried new pads/rotors/calliper rebuilds/bleeds etc. They would work again, but never quite as well as they should.
That said I’ve had problems with some Shimano and Hayes brakes too, so I’m not totally anti-Avid.
pipnet1Free MemberI work nightshift now so it varies. Used to be down to a fine art when I started at 6.45 though. Alarm was 5:52, needed to be on train station by 6:09. There was about 30 seconds spare for things going wrong. Amazingly in 3 years it only went wrong 4 or 5 times.
pipnet1Free MemberThe first Orbit MX I bought came with a split race, the rest didn’t. All of them got cut with a junior hacksaw, all are still fine.
pipnet1Free MemberNon-rechargeable ones least ages! Last winters will certainly be fine. I wouldn’t worry ’till about 3 years after you bought them.
pipnet1Free Member05/06 Giant Trance used a 190*50, as did similar age Spesh stumpjumper FSRs. Not sure if anything is still using that size though, maybe small travel XC frames?
pipnet1Free MemberAs soon as my 6 year old FSA Orbit headset dies…. I’ll spend 20 quid and buy another one….
This, meaning…
Chris King Headsets? Worth It?
No, not even close. And after seeing a mate break the flanges on 2 ISO hubs, I’d say the same about those.
pipnet1Free MemberPah, there was meant to be well over the 1000BHP mark in the old turbo days. I think that was from a 1500 cc 4 pot. BMW block basically that in yer 316 saloon!
Quite an interesting story behind the development of that IIRC. Seem to recall stories of the blocks being left behind the factory and the workers p*ssing on them. Probably not true, but funny all the same.
Back to Ferrari, I’m another person fully expecting to see some of Alonsos toys being thrown about next year. As for McLaren, I don’t see Button going anywhere soon, he’s too big an asset at the minute.
pipnet1Free MemberI’ve done the 120 to 135 with a block of wood before and it was a distinctly un-dignified method which made the mechanical sympathiser inside me weep. It did work though.
pipnet1Free MemberLOL @ Linux suggestion
What’s wrong with that? I’ve got Mint Linux running on a 9yr old PC that I use for office work and the like and it just works.
Anyway, Assuming you have a keyboard/mouse/monitor etc. and your old PC is a standard case, £350 for new bits would buy something pretty good. My gaming PC only cost me £400 to build as I re-used the case etc.
That said you still might get better value buying a full build. After all you are going to have to buy a copy of windows (assuming that’s what you want) which is around £100-£120 straight off.

People who are daft enough to disregard their own safetywhile cycling drivingwill continue to do soFair point.
pipnet1Free MemberAm I the only one who thought it already was the law? Anyway I’m not convinced it would make any difference either way. People who are daft enough to disregard their own safety while cycling will continue to do so. It’s illegal to ride without lights in the dark, doesn’t stop people though.
The one thing that always strikes me is how helmets are always portrayed in the media as a miracle life saver. I don’t know the details, but if the guy who was hit head-on by a van was wearing a helmet it could very well have made no difference at all. Granted at least his chances would have been better, but still.
pipnet1Free MemberWow the brakes are good, I have “good” rim brakes on the road bike but by gosh 185mm disks are wonderful in comparison.
This always catches me out. Get to the end of the road, go to gently slow down, look an idiot as the front wheel stops dead…..
pipnet1Free MemberI got one from on-one about 2 weeks ago, has all the seals. Came with a top cap/star nut too even though the advert said it didn’t. Mine is black, if that makes any difference.
Quick point, they don’t have split crown races. This can be solved with a junior hacksaw 🙂 it’s a bodge but I’ve got 3 running like that now, the oldest being 3 1/2 years old and all are still fine after much abuse/no maintenance.
pipnet1Free MemberJust finished last of 7 12-hour night shifts. Won’t be doing a lot today. I now have 3 weeks off though, so I shan’t complain 😀
pipnet1Free MemberThe life saver check has done exactly what it says it does several times for me. Did motorbike test 10 years ago, and it changed the way I rode a bicycle on the road drastically. When I started driving lessons about 4 years ago it was instinctive to do it in a car too.
pipnet1Free MemberIf I’m near a DAB then TeamRock, sometimes Absolute Classic Rock. At work with a typical work radio its Absolute, as thats the best it’ll pick up. Unfortunately while work let us on the net, we can’t get radio streams 🙁
pipnet1Free Member3 bikes have felt brilliant from the minute I built them. 2005 Giant Trance, 2006 Spesh bighit3, and 2012 On-One Macinato.
Looking at the other thread I seem to be in a minority by loving my steel 456?
pipnet1Free Member2007 Norco XXXX when I was into jumpy bikes. Was bloody awful! Otherwise not really. Some have taken more getting right than others, and I’ve liked some more than others, but apart from the Norco I’ve got on with all of them.
pipnet1Free MemberI can’t be the only person who simply throws those plastic shim/locator things away? They just get in the way. Never had a problem with out it.
They also haven’t seen a torque wrench. In fact there is nothing on my bikes, or any previous bikes, that have ever seen a torque wrench.
pipnet1Free MemberMy experience of DAB is it needs to be a lot better! I had a cheapy one first and had all sorts of problems getting reception anywhere in the house. I put this down to it being cheap. I now have a relatively expensive system and its just as bad! The antenna has to be in a very specific place to get a good amount of stations.
This isn’t too bad until you think that with FM you just plug it in and switch it on and you tend to have pretty good reception (in urban places at least). Also comparing FM with DAB (Radio2 for example) FM still sounds better on the same system.
OK you get a lot of stations but the same as digital TV, there’s just more shite.
It’ll get there, but right now I’m not impressed.
pipnet1Free MemberI moved out when I was 25. It took about a day to realise I should have done it years earlier! If you can’t afford to buy then rent, it’s not a dirty thing y’know 😉
pipnet1Free MemberAn easier question to ask yourself (possibly) is not where is the air getting in, but where is the oil getting out? If air can get into the system that quick, then you can be pretty certain that the oil can get out the same place, which should be easy to spot.
That’s the theory anyway. However after similar problems with both Juicys and Elixers I can confirm it doesn’t always work like this.
I know it’s not the answer you want to hear, but new brakes is often the best option. There are still deals on Shimano Deore 596s about for less than £100 a pair, and I haven’t heard anything but praise for them.
pipnet1Free MemberBefore it was taken over walking into my LBS with fish and chips for the guys lunch was a very effective workshop queue jumping aid. Have paid for several small jobs/small parts in beer and Haribo before too.
pipnet1Free MemberAs per above. If it was mine I would ignore it and keep going (you should see the state of my commuter bike!). However unless it was VERY cheap I wouldn’t buy it. Actually I probably wouldn’t even if it was very cheap.
pipnet1Free MemberWhen I was a student in Newcastle I tried to buy some IPA from Boots to clean the…
Tip if you’re a student, go and ask the Uni/College chemistry technician. Once I said what it was for he just said ‘Oh, how much do you want, we’ve got tons!’ I got 4 litres! Not sure how legal it was for him to give me that much, but I didn’t care.
They had a big water still too, which was very useful when I was mucking about with annodising.
pipnet1Free MemberI’d forgotten about those things. Mine was bright orange 😀 I seem to remember it didnt really handle at all, went through tyres almost instantly, and needed constant fiddling. Was good fun though!
pipnet1Free MemberI’ve only good things to say about TF. Every time I’ve dealt with them they have been faultless. As you said, even to the point where they could have got more money off me.
As for fork servicing, most forks are pretty simple to service yourself. Especially RockShox. The only forks I’ve come across that are a faff are some of the more complicated ‘Zocchi forks, needing special/modified tools, 12 pairs of hands, and a comprehensive knowledge of swear words!
pipnet1Free MemberI’ve had no problem with mine. In fact I’m about to order another one. I’m using the folding bead 2.25 on Mavic 321 rims. Running tubed, however I believe they are made by Maxxis (may be wrong) so doubt there would be much problem with tubeless.
Also they are £10 at the min (for 26″)!
pipnet1Free MemberI had a 10 year old XC rear that had been used for DJ/trials etc. It cracked so I rang and asked how much to fix it, as I assumed it wasn’t under warranty due to the abuse. Answer was ‘No, just send it back and we’ll put a new hub body on for you’. 4 days later I had a new hub body and new bearings throughout, with a note saying they had changed all the bearings and pawls/springs as they were worn. Can’t moan at that!
pipnet1Free MemberI’ve had both 11s and 33s in my trials riding days. The slave pistons and the bits at the wheel end are identical on both apart from colours.
The lever is the main difference. The 33 has a shorter lever for 2 finger braking, has on-the-fly pad adjustment, and has an all metal construction.
The 11s have a plastic/resin lever construction apart from the lever blade itself, and pad adjustment is via allen key. They flex a bit more in use, and dont look quite as good, but preformance/power is very similar to the 33s.
As for the comparison with Vs. Well both the 33s and 11s will be heavier than a good V setup. When both are set up properly the power is similar. The main advantage for me was reliability. They were put on the bike, abused for around 5 years in all weathers, then sold still working the same as when they were new. I find Vs need regular attention to keep them working properly.
The other advantage was they looked cool. Especially as I had SID blue ones when everyone else had yellow 😀
pipnet1Free MemberPeople who assume you are jealous/envious of something if you say it’s stupid.
Many people would say owning 5 bikes is stupid. I’m fine with my own stupidity 🙂
