I had this debate with someone on BR last week… on what basis? There’s scientific and real world studies out there showing that it makes little difference, and that saving weight is good regardless, targeting it on the wheels doesn’t really make much more difference. 16 times more improvement. No way.

I dunno, as soon as I went tubeless I noticed a huge difference to how the bike felt. I felt it was a lot more responsive and quick to pick up, and it seemed to skip over rocks/roots, rather than plough through them.
These tubes seem to save as much weight as going tubeless, but without all the faff of sealant! Looks like a winner to me.
A standard £5 mtb tube weighs around 170g, while an Eclipse MTB tube weighs in around 69g, resulting in over 100g an end saved. If you find another way of saving that amount of weight, without spendin several hundred quid, I’d be keen to see it!

As with anything high end, this is aimed at people who want the lightest product on the market- not at average Joe Bloggs who doesn’t really care how much his wheels weigh.
As usual, these people are very quick to say “not worth the money” without giving them a chance. Well, no-one’s going to force you to buy them. If you do fancy giving them a go, that’s how much they cost. I personally like the idea, and will certainly be giving them a shot next time my tyre sealant’s due to be changed.

Is it BB30 or PF30? They’re not the same thing:

    http://www.silverfish-uk.com/ProductDetail/8917/11689/PFBB30-X-Type-Adaptor

    As they’re RF BB’s, they’re completely serviceable.

Silverfish, who are a bunch of useless ****

That’s a touch unfair, I think. Especially that you can pick up every spare part you’ll need for a Formula brake from http://www.silverfish-uk.com/
Granted, you’ve got your own issues with Silverfish, but I fail to see how that has any bearing on the OP’s question.

    Hey Paul,

I’ve just been on the phone with SLC and have been quoted about £150. Seems pretty reasonable, and the person who i spoke to seemed very knowledgeable and friendly.

    I’ll be going there, methinks!

    Cheers.

Feather cycles just north of York is a good ‘un. I’ve ridden out there with a frame on my back before to have it fixed 😀

That’s a shame as group buying seems to have worked for the local electrical shops (Euronics)?

That’s a different kettle of fish really, as it’s a totally different marketplace: pretty much everyone buys electric goods, while relatively few people buy bikes.
People buying high-end bikes are generally very specific about the brand they want, whereas the majority of people buying electric goods aren’t so fussed. So, if you’ve got 5 bike shops in one town, they all want to stock different brands to appeal to different customers, while electric retailers can comfortably all stock the same brands as it’s the price that’s important.
If all bike shops stocked the same brands it would make the industry a bit boring, wouldn’t it?

There’s a lad in york who builds em:
    http://36ers.wordpress.com/2012/09/18/dylan-thomas/

I’ve had a ride on the red one pictured there, and while it was interesting, it was very hard to handle. Then again, I’m only 5ft 8″ (as is the guy who built it) so it’d probably be alright if you’re 6ft silly”

I’m going to throw a spanner in the works here, I’m afraid. I’m 5ft 8″ with an inside leg of around 30″ and I chose a small. I run a 90mm stem and its absolutely bang on for me.

With it having a pretty short wheelbase it can be a bit twitchy, but I quite like that. A medium with a short stem would probably be a bit more stable, but really it’s down to personal preference.

Best thing to do is to have a go of a demo bike. Where abouts are you based?

Umm… I think you have the wrong end of the stick watsontony- silverfish are importing DVO. They’ve not bought the company.

If you’re going to borrow money to get a car, try your bank before going for motor finance.
I’m picking up a new car on Monday (Focus) and have got a bank loan, as it’s so much cheaper:
After deposit & trade in on our old car I’ve had to borrow £3k. Through car finance (whoever Evans Halshaw use) it was looking like it would cost around £600 for 18 months.
Went through the bank and it’s half that, at £183 a month for 18 months. I plan on paying it back sooner though- try and pay £250 a month if I can.

Turbines are ace! I had a set on my wee balfa which I used at the Mega last summer. They took all that in their stride, as well as a few fairly big hucks in the bikepark.
I’ve now got them on my Yeti which gets used for everything from sessioning DH tracks, to a bit of XC racing.

You’ll not be disappointed with those cranks.

I’d make the argument that the carbon one doesn’t have mudguard eyelets on the dropouts or any way of attaching the guards to the crown….

I agree- that’s the only thing this bike is missing. I came so close to buying one, but I wanted a steel fork rather than carbon, and I cannot abide that hideous disc mount. It just looks wrong!

I would make the argument that it’s only difficult to fit mudguards around a disc brake if you have an IQ of 3, and lack opposable thumbs.

It’s be worth paying the extra for the carbon fork, if only for the fact that the steel fork is ****-ugly.

So it’s a £1k frame, and they’re giving it to you for £750, and then another £75’s worth of stuff thrown in? All for the sake of a few cosmetic marks?

Sounds like an alright deal to me!

    No worries.

My old shop specialized in this kind of thing, and I always found the Yepp childseats to be leaps and bounds ahead of anything else on the market.
Might even be worth swapping your stem for something a bit higher rise, and getting a set of modern dutch bars (very wide, and loads of backsweep.) They’re not that expensive (£20 max, i think) and they’re dead comfy.
Give the guys at Cycle Heaven in York a call, and they’ll be able to help you out.

Edit: I just accidentally the last sentence 😳

Oh, and if you’re going to get your missus a bike for carrying the kids, don’t get a Pashley. They look pretty, but they’re not very useful for these types of childseats. (they have very slack HAs, so they don’t respond well to being loaded up at the front)

Better with something a bit more modern: http://www.cycle-heaven.co.uk/bikes/brands/gazelle/gazelle-chamonix-pure-women-s-2013/

    or a bit cheaper: http://www.cycle-heaven.co.uk/bikes/brands/gazelle/gazelle-esprit-7-speed-2012-women-s/

I used to sell loads of these seats at my old shop, but generally only on Dutch bikes. They’re a pain in the arse to use on MTBs because they’re not designed for it.

Is yours the newer style one which mounts to the stem/steerer (so it turns with the bars)?

You might want to try some wider bars with a shedload of backsweep- something like the on-one mary bar.

People who write “should of” when should have written “should have” 😉

It’s something I’ve noticed since I moved to England. I can’t recall ever having seen it written back in Scotland.

Have you tried holding the more active piston in place, and using the pressure to push the sticky one?
I’d do that a few times, as it could just be that the seal’s a bit dry/stiff on one side.

As Northwind says, they may have been sat around for a while, so one of them might just need to get moving again.

A mate of mine did the Mega on his SB95 with 120mm forks- he had a great time.
You can now get em with 140mm fox forks, or 130mm revelations.

If you’re heading south on the A1, the trails along the Derne Valley in Doncaster are really good.

If not, head west or north. Other than that, there’s pretty much bugger all south of York.
