I’d completely forgotten about this, but I thought it was due for an update, seeing as there’s been some significant developments over the past couple of months.

Firstly- the security staff at the Uni came in and placed hidden cameras in the office a few months ago, and left them there for over 3 weeks. Someone must have tipped the thief off about it, as nothing went missing during this time.
After 3 and a bit weeks, the cameras were moved to a different office in the same building, where thefts had been reported.
A week later, and a thief has been caught! 😀

Turns out it was what we thought all along- one of the night porters. Apparently a few of the people in my missus’ office knew who he was (a right scummy wee bastard)
When they told him he was being sacked for theft, he started kicking off, threatening employment tribunals etc…
When he was shown the footage and the stack of evidence, and then given the offer of going quietly, or police involvement, he settled down a bit.

So, he’s buggered off now with a permanent black mark on his CV. I don’t like reveling in the demise of others, but this guy had it coming.
I still reckon they should have got the police involved, but he’s not there any more, and nothing’s gone missing since, so there’s maybe not a great deal of point.
    Oh well…

    Cheers!

They’re a wee bit flatter on top than a bel air, and also a wee bit chunkier. If you like the bel-air then you’ll probably get on with it, I reckon.

I’ve seen quite a few shops which do an SDG demo thing though, where you can take one and try for a few days before you buy. Could be worth looking into!
I’ve always been a fan of the bel air, and recently tried a Falcon, which was really nice. It’s like the bel-air in terms of the shape (slightly contoured top, with a bit of lift at the tail end) but much slimmer, and a bit better looking.

    Cheers!

You ordered that bike in October 2010 and it’s still not here?! Damn, I’d be pissed if I were you.

However, if you’ve only ordered it a week ago, it’s not really that bad. Chillllllll, Winston.

EDS Bikes, in between Scarborough and Pickering have a load of Salsa & Surly demo bikes I believe.

The main man there is Wayne- he doesn’t have a website, and shares a premises with a signwriting company, but he’s got a really cool wee shop.

Probably is just down to washers, although it depends on the frame. If you’ve changed the bearings and not put the washers back in, it will not allow the shock hardware to tighten up properly against the links/hardware, causing play.

I came across this with a bike recently, in an almost identical situation. An apparently trained and experienced mechanic had replaced all the bearings in a frame and couldn’t get rid of the play in the back end, despite putting in new shock hardware, bolts etc. Turns out he’d simply forgotten to put the washers back on behind the head of the shock bolts, meaning that they were fully tightened before they were able to bind the whole area together. This was on a cheaper Mondraker frame (a Tracker to be precise) which doesn’t use threaded holes in the upper and lower linkages.

Best bet if you’re unsure is to take it to your nearest decent bike shop. It’s probably a very quick fix.

Just been on the phone to 101 and reported it. Got a reference number for the incident- apparently they’re classifying it as a hit and run RTC!

It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes of it.

Try EDS bikes in Scarborough. They keep a pretty massive range of Surlys in stock.

I was pretty chuffed with my fix when the tensioner on my old SS gave up the ghost, mid ride, and I was able to fix it with a stick and some zip ties:

@Andrewh- are you able to comment on any thread on this forum without turning it into an excuse to whinge about Silverfish? Butterbean is right- you crashed your bike and broke it. From memory of the thread you put up about this; when told that you weren’t going to be given a new one for free, you threw your toys out the pram, and haven’t stopped crying since. Get over it…

Whatever the case, it’s irrelevant as they’re no longer the distributor of Rocky Mountain Bikes, and this thread was about finding out who is.

There is a new distro for RM, and if you use the Rocky Mountain Dealer Locator function you’ll see their details:

    well this is escalating quickly!

Sometimes spokes come loose- it’s as simple as that. There’s no reason to get all worked up about it.
Just mention it to the guys at Dales and I’m sure they’ll sort it. I know a lot of the guys there personally, and they’re a decent bunch.

Anyway, why are you asking this on a forum, and not asking them? https://www.dalescycles.com/contact-us-f1

Sancho- the new 2012 onwards version of the carbon s/arm on the ASR-5 has a solid brake mount.

To be fair, the latest generation (2012 onwards) of ASR5s have different swingarms, so this isn’t an issue with the newer ones.

Wilko, don’t let it put you off the bike- they really are awesome 🙂

I’m not sure I agree. I had a pretty big stack last tuesday night, which resulted in me smacking my head off a massive rock, and a trip to A&E. The dent in the side of the helmet (a Fox Flux) was very low down, just at above the back of my ear.
The helmet’s a write off, but I’m bloody glad it was there. I compared it against an XC/Road lid I have, and there’s no coverage where the rock would have hit, had I been wearing it.

I’ve replaced the flux this week, for something similar, and I reckon I will always have this kind of helmet in the future.

    Honestly, this one:

I built it up on a whim cos I fancied a cruiser, but I picked the wrong size frame on ebay- it was too small for me, and too big for my missus. Absolutely gutted…

    I’m 5ft 8″ and ride a small, with a 140mm fork.

It’s a truly awesome bike. You will not regret getting one!

    Heavy, questionable main bearing?

You mental? at 6.5lbs including shock, it’s half a pound lighter than a Nomad, 1/4lbs lighter than a Bandit, and a whopping 2Lbs lighter than the Banshee Rune!

Depends on the circumstances. If you’ve actually suffered damages which result in loss of income, or damage to your bike, then maybe.

If you’ve just ended up with a couple of bruises and are a wee bit sore, absolutely not. Mountain biking, and racing in particular, is a dangerous sport. Don’t be surprised when you get hurt!

I went down there about a fortnight ago (from plymouth) It was a good trail, but quite short at the moment, and probably not worth the trip from Exeter yet. It’ll be pretty good once it’s all up and running in the summer.
That said, the cafe’s really good (and the girls who run it are stunning!)

I’m from Fairlie 😀 I’d show you around, but I live in Plymouth now I’m afraid!

There’s loads of good riding to be had on the moors behind Fairlie- There’s a few lads on Trailscotland forum who ride there, and would be glad to welcome a new member.

Have a look up around Kelburn estate, as there’s a dh/enduro track being put in there by a few locals at the moment. It’s not finished, but what is there is pretty good. There’s loads of potential for trails to be built too, if you don’t mind getting your hands mucky.

I’d be happy to share directions to a few trails with you, if you want to email me: scott.bannister (at) hotmail.co.uk (minus spaces etc.)

Oh, one other thing about Fairlie: Watch out for the coal lorries! Yikes![/url]

    Cheers,
    Scott.

    😆 I’ve just remembered something else…

When I was working in one of a large chain of bike shops, I had a guy come in and ask if we sold “Bomkss” bikes (difficult to spell the noise he made)
I asked “I’m sorry, what kind of bikes?”
    “Bomkss”
“Umm… I’m not sure I’ve heard of that brand, Could you spell that please?”
    “Yeah sure, B M X”
    “Oooooh…”

I’ve worked with people like you before, total nightmare to work with, you just drag everyone else down.

That’s a mighty claim to make about someone you’ve never met! I’d like to see anyone with more than half a brain-cell maintaining enthusiasm and interest in a job like that.
I’ve been in similar situations, and it does get very demotivating. Once you’re in that slump it’s bloody difficult to get back out of, and everyone’s entitled to a bit of complaining now and then…

I’ve known Andeh for a few years now, and I honestly cannot think of a single person I know who is more creative, bright and naturally capable. I’d kill to have half the level of talent he has!

I know it doesn’t help much, but if I had a company (or was in a position to hire someone for the company I work for) he’d be the first person I’d be offering a job to, almost irrespective of the role itself. Someone as intelligent and innovative as Andeh would be an asset to any company.

Bendy chainrings are pretty common on cheap chainsets- normally fixed by careful tweaking with an adjustable spanner.

I’d hang off screaming “not fit for purpose!” as it’ll probably not do you any favours, but the bike shop really should sort the problem for you. It’s not like it’s difficult.
