    Thanks guys.

Did you go through a specific optician? I only ask because I see Specsavers are now doing it now, and living on the Isle of Wight optician options are a little limited without crossing water.

The basic build is done by Trek – all Evans do is unbox it and sort of turn bars, put wheel in, check gears, pump up tyres.

When I was a mechanic we had a post delivery inspection which included truing and tensioning wheels.

It were all better when I were a lad. No respect etc. etc.

I still have some mixtapes made by friends and ex-girlfriends. Setting them up on Spotify isn’t quite the same experience.

I know a price of £1m+ was mentioned just for installation.

I was on the Aston Hill committee between 2009 and 2013, and we got an estimation for putting in a chairlift – £1.5-2m.

There is an element of comparing apples to pears, but it does give you an idea of how prohibitively costly it is.

As a very, very general rule, 27.5 tend to be more nimble (read better where there’s a lot of speeding up and slowing down, combined with quick changes in direction) whereas 29 is better at carrying speed (read travelling over rough, jarring terrain and covering distance).

It’s worth thinking about where you ride when selecting a wheel size.

An album I listened to a lot disappeared one day…

I believe one reason is whether the rights owner want it featured. If an artist / band switches labels it’s up to the label whether the music they own is featured on a streaming station.

(The Therapy? album Crooked Timber isn’t on Spotify because it’s the only album they recorded on Demolition Records. Annoyingly it’s one of my favourite albums by them.)

What worries me is that any change at the moment would swing in favour of the landowner.

Dig or Ride secret tracks? A new law means you’re a criminal.

It is not a grey area at all. It is crap but that’s different.

That is crap. But thanks for the clarification.

Were you on foot or on a bike?

Bike. I was technically in the wrong at the point of confrontation.

Was he the landowner? Only the landowner can ask you to leave. Other wise a cheery wave and be on your way

I believe so, but didn’t question. Both the farmer and lady farmer were coming out of farm grounds on foot in full welly regalia. I gave a cheery wave while having obscenities yelled at me once I reached metalled track / road junction. ;)

You need to look at the definitive map which may be available online to view via your local council’s website.

It may be worth contacting the rights of way officer for the appropriate council if it looks a bit ‘messy’ as you say – dead ends etc

    Good calls.

Need to be care full at present some of these people in the countryside will start to get very heavy handed just like in Foot and Month even though you have a right to be there at present.

Yes. It was stupid busy out. I’m re-working solo ride plans.

    Did you cough on him?

He seemed keen to get close at one point and his wife accused me of being a carrier that could infect gates around her livestock. The thought did cross my mind. :)

I was recommended the howies bibs by a survivor of the LEL and I like them. A little short on the leg (if that bothers you – I’m 5’11” and wearing S/M shorts) but stretchy enough to pull the front down for a stand-up wee.

Pretty sure you can reconfigure the AE/L button to be an AF on button if that helps?

I think you’re right. One day I’ll read the manual.

If it helps, I have the Z7 and I’m super happy with it, but if I shot sports I think I wouldn’t be, so maybe not the Z50 ?

I think we are getting near the pinnacle of flappy mirror. It’s meant to be awesome

I think the z50 would be disappointing.

Agreed. I’m rapidly moving away from the Z 50, as a tool for what I generally want to achieve.

Thanks all. Some great suggestions. Stupidly I have an eBay search set-up for a Nikkor 70-200 but hadn’t even thought of looking at lenses…

What is the D7200 lacking? Not a lot, TBH. I also have a D300 as a back-up which is an awesome camera; it was replaced because of the advances in low light performance (the D300 shows its age here) and to get double SD ports. So, to compare the two, I do miss the auto focus button on the back, the D300’s more solid build / weather resistance and slightly higher FPS (with additional grip: 8fps vs. 6fps). But otherwise I cant fault the 7200 (well, maybe a larger buffer wouldn’t go amiss).

Going FX will probably happen at some point. Unfortunately I can’t buy bargainous second hand with this particular deal, so a used D4 is probably out of the question at this point. But it doesn’t hurt to have a goal! A lens would be a good start.

Again – thanks all. This has helped sort out a few ideas.

Thanks all. Some good options there to check out! Although I think I’ll be avoiding insulated ski trousers down here in the south. ;)

I don’t want especially baggy and I don’t mind paying for something that will last. I’ve used MoD surplus in the past and they’re great, just not tailored particularly well for riding bikes (unsurprisingly).

I bought some rapanui t shirts (I think after seeing mention on this site. However the print has started coming off very quickly. Has this happened to anyone else?

I’ve not been wearing your t-shirts so I’m probably not the best person to ask.

For those that already own – I can stand-up in a H2 at 1.8m tall – would getting a H3 be a benefit in your opinion?

(We’d also be running a roof rack for boards / solar / roof box)

I have to admit, it hadn’t really dawned on my how much the payload affects things, or how low it is in real terms.

(Fortunately I am also one of the last old bastards on an older licence, but the better half isn’t quite so fortunate)

When he got the payout he promptly ditched her and went on a 5 year trip around the world living doing the most amazing things, meeting incredible people and making sure he enjoyed every single penny of that money.

    Good.

I only hope his passing is painless.

In typical French style, electrics are probably the biggest potential issue, but the usual issues are door locks/handles/hinges/rollers…

That all sounds like my old 205GTi.

Some great replies – thanks all, especially MC – some brilliant food for thought. Certainly widens the search parameters.

Anyway looking to spend around £10k for a non converted van with non intergalactic mileage! Other than Ebay, anywhere else to look??

I’ve been using Facebook, Gumtree, Autotrader and motors.co.uk.

We’re talking about something bigger, along the lines of a Ducato. You can stand up in it and we’d be able to squeeze in a permanent bed across the back.

BUT we don’t drive it every day, and I wouldn’t want anything bigger than a medium Ducato/sprinter etc.

Now looking at a MWB Ducato/Sprinter etc.

Do you want a california beach then? Basically a caravelle with a pop top and one SLD. Rear bench/bed and the seat rail system is genius. You can then get modular units to go on the passenger side for camping.

This sounds like it could be another wormhole to explore.
    Back in a bit… ;)

Thanks all for above advice. Some very good stuff. I should add – there’s three of us (two adults, one six year old who is gaining height daily and the main reason for looking bigger).

Because we already have the Bongo I have an idea of what we want (top entry fridges are awesome, and as for sliding seats – oh yes! One of the reasons I love the current van. But everything with a pop-top seems to come with a fixed rock and roll…)

We do want to do some more touring (we’ve previously been to Croatia and have sights set on other parts of Europe), but realistically we’re after a glorified day/weekend van that isn’t too uncomfortable for a few weeks away, which has got me thinking a little more about looking at a Kombi instead. It would make more sense as a daily driver and be better for lugging bikes/boards around, as well as costing less. Food for thought.

If we got a conversion it’d definitely be a LWB – I looked at one earlier today and the extra space over what we have now is very noticeable. 2007 2.5 174bhp on 98k, which everything seems to suggest is when the Gates stretch belt/freewheel needs replacing.

Finally, thanks @steveh – I may yet be in touch!

I hope you’ve bought the stick man family sticker ready for the back window?

    Yeah. No.

If you don’t need it as a daily driver…

At this point in time it would be an occasional/daily driver, otherwise I agree.

Heh! What came first? The clique, or the cliché? ;)

(Yeah, OK. I probably mean cliché.)

Why must you punish your passengers?

Now this is why I posted the question. Not good then?

It used to be run to the top of that mountain and back and then we’ll tell you the next checkpoint……only to be told the next checkpoint is back to the top of the mountain.

My brother in law did something interesting in the army and has a similar story. “Run up Pen-y-Fan and get me a rock with a number on it.” BiL returns and hands rock to staff. “No, that’s a 6. I wanted a 7. Go and get me a 7.”

Anyone have a car seat that their 2, 3, 4 year old uses and is still rear facing?

We used one until our daughter was 3-4, then switched it to forward. It’s now a booster. I think it’s a Klippan from In Car Safety in Milton Keynes (round teh corner from Madison). Seat sits on an Isofix base, but as a booster will work with safety belts in most cars.

Car is a late MK2 Octy estate.

I heard about this yesterday through a mutual friend. I didn’t know soulrider other than on here, but as said already – it’s always a shock.

Love and condolences to his family and friends.

I just assumed tyre size/wear would throw the speedo out by a small amount, assuming it’s absolutely spot-on in the first place.

We are very impressed by the Shark we got a few months ago.

We were so impressed by the old chap’s that we bought one too. It’s very good and the two batteries mean you get a genuinely reasonable run time.

My advice is, don’t cheap out, look after them and try on a few pairs.

As someone with skinny feet, that’s sound advice.

Enough to be looking at tho. Cheers!

    There’s options! Thanks all.

Definitely liking the look of the Sorels and the Lenons. Vans are always a good shout, although I currently own too many pairs(!) and seem to go through the heels very quickly…

I’ll do some more in-depth researching later. Cheers!
