I’m with pyschle with this one. I understand that a bike shop is a business and can’t do stuff for free but for a bit of good will I would have thought that the bike shop would have sorted this out as pyschle is a big ticket customer. I often do things for free in my business for a good customer and these customers keep coming back, go figure.
I have used this bike shop in the past and through my experiences they wont get any of my business again. As others have said, vote with your feet.

I think that the article highlighted by “crazy legs” pretty much hits the nail on the head.
Through work I have unfortunately met several people that are quite happy to buy a “£2000 bike for £80 from a lad down the pub”. The £80 would give the said lads a decent night out for about 1 hours work. The bikes would have the serial numbers ground off with a disc cutter and given a quick respray with a can of paint stolen from the local Halfords, all a bit to easy for them.
The people stealing the bikes know plenty about bikes, a top bike gets them a better price and the people buying the bikes know about the bikes they are buying. The buyers simply don’t see buying a nicked bike as a crime and as I was told, if someone can afford a £2ooo+ bike then they can afford to have it insured, so they can claim on their insurance and buy a new bike and therefore they don’t really lose out.
If people were not prepared to buy stolen bikes and there is a massive market for nicked bikes then I doubt there would be as many bikes stolen as there appears to be. It used to be a similar situation for car stereo’s a fair few years back but then car manufactures started producing stereo’s that were not interchangeable with other cars and harder to steal, so people were less inclined to steal them. IMHO :-)

Ask Orange for your PAC(?) number. They will send you a letter asking you to phone them to see if they can do anything. They should then offer a better deal eg- 1200 mins, free calls to landlines, gazillion texts, 500 Mb data for about £22.50 for a 24 month contract.

    Good advice above.

You can park at the top of Minley Road at the roundabout with the Fleet Road, just off the A30. There is a pull in off the roundabout next to the gate but can be a bit popular with dog walkers etc. From there you can access the entire area. Coming from the M3/Farnborough direction I have parked in the Crown & Cushion pub car park (I tend to have a post ride pint so pub gets my business for a few hours parking. :-)

I asked my LBS for some carbon paste and they kindly gave me a small foil sachet of the stuff, just enough to do the job. Worked well so far.

Mine was a Rayleigh Mirage in deep purple ('87 I think) and was a bit of a gate but it done the job though. Not a clue how much it weighed but it had a stand on it! Would go riding round Swinley Forest and would hardly see another bike.
First MTB I saw would have to be a Muddy Fox, like so many others.

I would guess that house builders are desperate for cash at the moment. The developer may need to sell units to fund the rest of the development so that may put you, the buyer in a strong position to get a good deal.

I really like Panerai watches and would like a PAM 111 or 000.
The overly high prices for many of these watches bears little resemblance to the cost involved with getting the watches to the marketplace but I would still buy one. It's the engineering bit that fascinates me. In fact I have a lovely Breitling Montbrillant Olympus and will be wearing it later.

Went there last year and took the bikes. Not really a mountain bike holiday but got some off road riding in. Forests went on forever and ever, lovely little villages with nice bars, lakes and rivers everywhere. Biting insects were viscous, one night I slept with my head against the side of the tent and ended up with 60 bites on one side of my head. Wouldn't mind going back and trying a bit more biking.

Good point on making the donation anonymously.

I don't support the Blair government's decision to go to war in Iraq but I do wonder if any UK government would be able to say thanks but no thanks if the Americans wanted our active support in a similar situation?

Just a quick search and hey presto…..

After taking a beating in the media for failing to come up with aid for earthquake-stricken Haiti, oil-rich Saudi Arabia has now agreed to pitch in $50 million to help the poor Caribbean Sea nation, news agencies are reporting.

The aid will be directed through the United Nations.

"The kingdom, by instruction of King Abdullah, is donating $50 million … to assist the Haitian people," foreign ministry spokesman Osama Nugali told Agence France-Presse today.

    — Los Angeles Times

It does appear that Saudi Arabia took a bit of time to open their wallets though!

I believe that Pakistan's "Muslim Brothers" are providing aid, as are many other countries of the world. Maybe it is the way our press report on such issues as to why we don't hear about what other countries are doing to help.

“The Saudi Royal Air Force will establish an air bridge to Islamabad to transport the relief supplies,” the statement said. The Saudi Finance Ministry has already arranged large amounts of foodstuffs, medicine, blankets and tents for the flood victims.

“We are coordinating with UN organizations to distribute humanitarian and emergency relief supplies worth $100 million, which the Kingdom had earlier allocated to support victims of natural calamities in Pakistan,” the statement said.

Since the government pulled the plug on "Building Schools for the Future" my work has pretty much dried up. People in the industry I speak to are more concerned now than 12/18 months ago.
Some of the school's that have had their new builds mothballed are in a desperate state (no heating, glass falling out of windows, knackered plumbing etc)and will need demolishing so I believe that the school building programme will resurface under another name. Fingers crossed!

Its you who claim the nature of Huntlys crimes are syuch that he does not deserve the protection of the law – protecting him from harm.

^ Where did I say this TJ? ^

As for your question, the justice system is in place to do this job and it does a decent job of it but doesn't deal with every individual case well enough. There are people in better positions than me to assess the criteria that deserves exceptional treatment but lets start with Huntley's total remorse at double child murder. I haven't seen his statements in the press stating his remorse too often, have you?

    Interesting article BTW.

So – you challenge is to give me some criteria for deciding who should be treated less well because of the seriousness of their crimes.

Do you think that Huntley's crimes were not serious enough for then?

The system is good but does need looking at, as it has its faults. You will never rid the system of individuals that don't follow procedure correctly and you end up with miscarriages of justice, think Colin Stagg or the Guildford Four cases but then the system thankfully looked again at those cases again and overturned the guilty verdicts.

Then look at Venables and his recent child porn case, I think that Venables has shown that he is just bad, do you think the system has worked in its present form for Venables? What is in place to deal with such an individual and why hasn't worked already?

TandemJeremy – due to his crimes he will always be a target to other prisoners and due to his crimes he deserves to be treated robustly. Go and watch the interviews he gave on television, he is a devious, evil and calculating person. He deserves robust justice (but not capital punishment which I strongly disagree with it).
I have an old acquaintance who's partner is a criminal psychologist and he would often argue that some people do need to be treated differently. Some people are just bad and nothing can help or change them.

Everyone is equal under the law no matter how unpleasant they are.

And that is why the law is an ass.
The law was not in a position to prevent his crimes unfortunately but Huntley should not have been in a situation where he could be assaulted. Due to his crimes he deserved to be incarcerated in an environment where he had no contact with anyone, solitary confinement if you like. Solitary might violate his human rights but Huntley has shown himself to be calculating and devious, therefore the law needs the jurisdiction to be able to deal robustly with such an individual.
Does the law need to change to be able to deal with this kind of person and in what way?

They have failed to ensure his safety, so he is entitled like anyone else to make a claim. Wether or not it's moral, is a completely separate issue which has no relevance here.

Are the family of his victims entitled to claim against Huntley, as his victims were entitled to be safe at the time of his crimes. If he does receive compensation, can the families of the victims claim that compensation from Huntley? I refer you back to the OP – is the law an ass? I think it is.

@ Mr Woppit – lets change the direction of the thread then and ask if prisoners are entitled to claim for financial compensation if they are failed by the relevant authorities. Is the system wrong?

As a civilised society we do have have duty to keep him safe (although personally I don't give a damn what happens to the monster) whilst he is in prison but we should never forget that he had a duty to not to commit the crimes he did. He chose to take the route in life he took.

Ahwiles – Interesting post, to be able to collect all the data required to answer your questions accurately would be very difficult. You would have to replicate an identical crash many times to accurately measure all the different forces, speeds, impacts and all the other "how much" & "whats". I doubt that could/would be done. It stopped an injury to the head and that is the important thing.

TandemJeremy – I agree that helmets are very good at preventing lacerations and so on but how can you be sure the helmet didn't prevent a major injury in Simwits off?

    piha

TandemJeremy – The evidence is that Simwits helmet stopped the rocky ground from impacting with skin and bone. I don't think that cannot be denied.
