Ok, I’m now just waiting on the dealer phoning me back.

i think I’m missing a service stamp for one year, but all the others are present and correct.

I’ll call the dealer, explain the problem (omitting any mention of the other garage) and see what they say.

    Piston rings. Righto.

Are these the sort of things that could have failed in the short time I’ve owned it or would it have been a problem that was already there when I bought it.

I think that’s my key concern about going back and asking for a refund or for it to be fixed for free.

Ok, the link Hora posted suggests I have 6 months. I will certainly give it a try.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Should I contact the seller to look at the car before sending him a letter rejecting it?

    The Which website quotes:
“But you only have a reasonable time to reject a second hand car. While there’s no clear definition of what a reasonable time is – it probably needs to be within three to four weeks – less if it’s an obvious problem.”

After 16 weeks, do I really have this option?

We took out a 6 month warranty on it (FreePlan extra). Having looked into the warranty a bit deeper now (it’s with a company called Warranty Management Specialists), I’ve seen lots of negative reviews about people trying to claim. Piston rings and and cylinder heads are supposedly covered by the warranty.

I think it was the fan belt that snapped. There was no overheating before it snapped, but it did heat up after. We pulled onto the hard shoulder immediately when the high engine temp warning came on.

It gets mixture of BP, Shell or Asda fuel mostly. We don’t have a tesco filling station near us.

It had 58,000 miles on it when we bought it and we’ve put about 3,000 on it in 4 months.

I took it back in to our local garage this morning. The mechanic revved the engine and showed me the huge plume of brown smoke coming out of the exhaust. Piston rings, head gasket, or valve lifters seem to be the most likely reason. I’ve not contacted the dealer we bought it from yet. I thought it would be better to have our garage at least see if the problem was the result of something we have done or if it was already in the car when we bought it.

It is a 1.8 petrol. My wife took it to the garage but didn’t mention the oil when they were looking at the misfiring problem. I’ll make sure to mention it tomorrow.

I was hoping sales of goods act might help me, but after 4 months do I have much chance?

I had the same happen on my old p7. Seatpost got stuck, took it to Cyclesurgery in Manchester who, after snapping the post flush with the top of the seat tube, helpfully told me that I needed a new bike (all with a totally straight face too).

I then took it to Ken Fosters in Chorlton and the mechanic set about it with a blow torch. 10 minutes later the post was out. There is some bubbling of the paint, and it needed some percussive maintenance (by way of a nice big hammer) to get it back in shape, but it’s totally fine now.

Picton, that’s pretty much exactly what I want it for (festivals and VW meets [we have a 1984 T25 poptop])

I love the story about the one-upmanship, pure genius.

We made a “Monster be-gone” spray from an old spray bottle for our 3 year old. Wifey drew a nice picture on it (monster in a red circle with a line through it) and he just lightly sprayed selected bits of his room before going to sleep. (Tip: don’t put too much water in it).

    Worked a treat.

Have been looking at trade sales only so far. I’m under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that it’s safer than buying privately.

The Almera looks a bit small for a family of four, but they are in the right sort of price range.

I did see that, but I thought I might try a DIY approach.

Sorry Chris, looks like you’ll need to pick it up from Manchester if you want it.

    No worries.

I’ll see if I can get him to pick it up. Some additional encouragement from you might help :)

    Hi Chris,

I can lend you a trailer if you like. Just bungie strap a car seat into it and you’re all set. You’ll need to pick it up from Manchester mind you or I can give it to Hora to pass on to you if you want.

Ok, this one only works if the person you are telling knows the song.

A recent poll has shown that ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ is the song that most people are likely to sing spontaneously.

Apparently the urge to sing it is only a whim away (a whim away, etc)

Coat already picked up and heading back out now….

Thanks for the sensible advice. I kinda thought the 14 would be the way to go, but the tight fisted Scot that I am thought the 16 might be a better financial decision.

I want him to enjoy it as much as possible, so getting the correct size to start with is probably the best bet.

    Thanks all.

I take the view that the Licence fee covers me only for the stuff I watch and listen to.

If other people watch other stuff then that’s what they pay for rather than me.

    I don’t get cross then

    POSTED 2 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

Except, I pay a license fee and get virtually nothing of interest to watch in return, whereas cr*p like this is legion.

I miss Big Al. Having moved from Glasgow to Manchester 4 years ago I haven’t found anywhere down here that even comes close.

Good chat, endless tea/coffee and an all round lovely genuine guy.

I still get my wheels from him whenever I can though

I run RXs on my Soul and found that new pads cause them to really stiffen up, so that they feel quite digital until the pads have worn in a bit (quite a bit actually). Then they start to give you a good amount of modulation. Superstar kevlar pads are the worst culprits IME, not due to quality, but due to being a bit thicker than the Formula ones. It’s a small irritation that I don’t really mind since they are ace at stopping me.
