Maybe we should work out how the other ‘minority’ sports have got better coverage and model that?

What are the BCF doign about this?

hmm.. after a weekend with guests and then being away for Easter (hence no weigh in) I seem to have turned into mr Blobby. :-(.

It seems that I have a tremendous ability to gain weight if I overeat at all 🙁

I seem to have gained 2kg – if that were all fat that would mean a calorific surplus of over 17 000. I had an Easter egg or to but come on now….

And I did a 15 mile fell run. Gutted.

Still back on the wagon now, trying to eat clean despite being away in Dublin for work.

Fatbob (considering reverting to old forum name).

At face value it sounds like he can’t handle you being better at something than he is.

We as individuals should be able to handle our partners being better at something than us. My wife, for instance has the potential to be a much better climber than me, and I think that’s great, but then again I’ve dealt with my insecurities (of which I have many!)

So you either need to help him through this, as it’s down to his self confidence and self image. Is he like this at other stuff? Would he play a game (scrabble for instance) that you would often beat him at?

Or DTMFA, there are plenty more fish in the sea, many of whom do need a bicycle.

I think, after 3 days of having guests and overeating, I’ve put back on all I lost last week 🙁

And now we are off to the lakes at Easter with the family so I can’t see things improving.

    Oh well.

I’m not *exactly* thin, but I’ve mislaid 25% of my bodyweight somewhere…

There’s tons of riding around there, sometimes muddy, but plenty of trails, and some good riding. Some testing climbs (well at least for me) and some good descents.

I like the one that starts here

    http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=519595&Y=151522&A=Y&Z=120

And goes down to the A25.

And this one is quite good fun

    http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=522160&Y=155569&A=Y&Z=120

    But there are plenty more.

Lots of night riding groups around as well.

I can get my Heckler in the boot of my Honda Accord with just the wheels off, pretty easily, plus space for my laptop (in a locked compartment), riding and overnight gear.

It’s the best biking car I’ve had.

    Hi,

Loads of good riding round here, at least two groups doing night rides weekly.

Plenty of woodsy trails locally, plus Surrey Hills within riding distance.

Not a huge amount of rocks, but plenty of fun riding. Lots of fast descents and some reasonable climbs.

Long routes, well there are masses of bridleways you linking everywhere, so you can make it as long as you like!

A fair bit of cheeky trail poaching action is possible too without causing problems, as long as you stay away form the busier areas.

‘The Kidz’ have build a few jumos and stuff around the place too.

OK, take let the air out of your -ve chamber (bottom of the stanchion).

Got all the travel back? if not then they are bust, if yes then you need to find a balance between small bump suppleness and ‘reserve’ travel. The more pressure in the -ve compared to the +ve the better the small bump response but it does tend to suck the fork down a bit.

Whilst the stickers on the legs suggest equal pressures I’ve heard that 0.66x the +ve pressure works well and that’s what I’m trying now.

Also is it me or are the pressures for rider weight a fair bit on the high side?

Just had may meeting cancelled woo hoo, not a day off but at least I don’t have to sit in traffic for 3 hours to do 36 miles (Reigate to Aldershot).

It has to be a snowy night ride tonight then!

I expect quite a few of us have this hanging over us. I work in IT technical sales so I recon I have a reasonable chance of getting the boot some time in the next year or so.

I went through all this during the dot com crash where the ISP I worked for had 5 rounds in 2 years.

Remember it’s the role that is redundant, not the person.

A few things I am doing

    1) Cherish the good days, trails as hard as summer, clear air etc.
    2) Book some summer riding events (big rides with mates/holidays/races whatever)
    3) See this time as a chance to get fit so you can hit the trails like a riding God in the summer (ok so a bit of poetic licence here)

Coffeking, what did you do to your exercise regime over that time? It strikes me that you will have triggered your bodies starvation response with such a low calorie diet, which will not help.

You need to counter this with increased exercise (possibly incluiding some resistance exercise) or your metabolism can slow to match your intake and additional calories (from a drinking session say) will be more readily stored as fat.

Also if you go to low, you risk loosing lean body mass, which is not what most people are trying to achieve. Especially if you then put the weight back on again, which will be fat. So you end up with the same or more body mass but with an increase fat %.

I’d go with that finbar, you have to accept that during a fat loss programme, from time to time you are going to get a bit peckish….

No A reasonable sized baked potato (fist sized) is around 225-250 kcal. If you are interested, then weigh them before cooking, they are 70 kcal/100g.

Stick half a tin of light baked beans on (150) and you have a good meal. Add some fruit for desert and you are away.

He needs to find the motivation, the rest is fairly easy.

There is no point finding new ways to exercise or anything whilst he is in the state of denial.

I would work through his mates, maybe get one of them who wants to lose weight or get fit to lay down a challenge or an event.

Or go for the ‘do love your kids enough to live to see them grow up’ talk – but that’s kind of the nuclear option….

Here’s my take from my experience over the last year, where I have lost 21kg. I’m not an expert on diet or exercise, or anything like that.

You know what to do, you are a smart guy with access to lots of information. As most posters say, avoid faddy diets, eat well from a nutrition point of view but aim for a calorie deficit. Increase your exercise and include some resistance training ( weights etc.)

What you need is a way to stick to it. And that’s the tough part, because most of us find loosing fat hard and uncomfortable. I’m sure some people here don’t find it difficult, and they are lucky, but for most of us it’s not.

Using negative feelings about yourself as a motivation is not (IMO) the best way to do it. You need a positive mental image to work towards, one that is real and easy to picture. It doesn’t need to be a picture of how you look, it might be a mental image of yourself sprinting up a hill past your astonished mates. Finishing a race, shopping for new jeans – whatever you want. Having this image bright and detailed in your mind is invaluable when your hand reaches for the chocolate biscuit, or ask your wife to make healthier food etc.

    Just my 2p’s worth.

You might think that all this is cobblers but I have found it works for me.

Feel free to contact me if you want any more of this kind of stuff.

I did it once with a bunch of people from work.

Most terrifying thing I’ve done on a bike ever. 27 000 people, 26 500 of them seemed broadly unable to ride a bike.

I had a quite a hard week last week – quite a few runs rides and weight sessions, along with several days of significant calorie deficit.

This morning I just couldn’t get up to speed on my run and I’ve been starving all day, and I’ve eaten almost as much by lunchtime as I ate all day last week. I’ve been feeling cold too.

I’m going to take it easy on the aerobic exercise for a few days and eat sensibly too (i.e. eat good food, and not aim for a calorie deficit) and treat this week as a recovery week.

I’ve recently acquired some callipers designed for home body fat measurement, and I’ve come out at about 15% – I’ve shed quite a lot of fat , with only a little bit of belly fat left to go (168cm, 68kg), so your result is probably ballpark right.

Hello to you all and well done so far. All the better eating plans above look great.

If I were to offer one piece of advice, it would be on motivation. You may find it easier to resist that snack, or to get out of bed an hour earlier to exercise if you have a really strong positive mental image of what you are working towards.

It might be how you look once you have lost that weight, or it might be situational, enjoying a climb in the sunshine or shopping for smaller clothes. Whatever it is make the picture real, detailed and practice thinking about it so that it comes to mind really easily.

When faced with a decision, picturing this image will make it easier to make the right choice.

I have found this a real help myself, over the last year.
