Always ridden flats, but want to try SPDs for more XC & Climbs.

But with an ACL reconstruction I don’t want to be twisted up in my frame when I inevitable crash and the SPDs don’t release. Even if you decide to go for more XC ride it always ends up that you go down the sketchy bits too quickly and end up in the bushes/trees/ditch!

Have branches and trees all the time on local trails.

Even came across Barb Wire between two trees at around neck height. On a quick singletrack section through the trees, was riding through and just caught something ahead that didn’t look right. Stopped a metre or so before, just glad I was looking ahead.

Was nice and rusty too, so camo’d and wouldn’t over just fallen out if knocked. Properly wound and tied in tight!
    Scary

Baggies that rip along the arse seam as soon as you stand out the saddle and if gets a bit rougher terrain!

Lean back over the saddle a little and rip!

Need a dropper just to save the shorts

Mine was sharp pain on snapping it, then a pain when twisting. Not huge swelling, and felt ok-ish after a day! Then scan showed if was totaled!

Also a wobbly/un-stable sensation when walking, going down stairs is normally a good indicator of an ACL injury

@jambalaya – seems you’ve done pretty well without an ACL!

Do you wear a brace for hockey/skiing?
Honestly I’d think twice now if I ever had the misfortune to do it again whether I’d have the op or not.
I didn’t have an unstable knee when injured, and reckon I could of carried on as before.
The fitness loss and recovery time to get back to a strength level you where at before the op is extensive.

Having a very good ‘sports’ specialist physio and consultant is a must though. If they don’t understand the requirements and need to get back to competitive sport then recovery will be tailored to get back to normal walking/use. Meaning you won’t be pushed through the strength/hydraulic leg testing machines, but also will have an even longer route back to full fitness.

Complete tear 2 years ago, had a reconstruction even though it was presenting minimal issues in general use. But hockey and skiing would of pretty much been a no go.

Took about six-eight to get back on the bike for fitness, around 9-12 months to get back to full strength for hockey. Was doing a lot of weights for flexibility and strength on legs and a lot of none impact cardio, so cycling.

Amazing how quite you’ll get muscle wastage on the injured leg, and it takes a long time to get that back.

If you want to do skiing, I’d not like to bet how long you’d last with a partial ACL?

I find the Advantage on the Front pretty grippy. Run it with a less grippy Ardent at the rear
Better than the MountainKings it replaced, and higher volume.
Would possibly swap for a Rubber Queen, but not until it’s on its last legs!

If CRC had the 18″ BluePig in stock may well of just gone for it!

But the Cotic in Orange is so tempting at £375!!

    philb88

The more I see the differnt options, the more confusing it gets!!
I was swaying more towards the Cotic, but those Pigs look good!

Ragley is a simple choice size wise, as the 18″ is perfect size with a short stem.

The Soul is trickier. The M has a 594mm TT and L 610mm, and my Genesis a 595mm TT.
So at just 6ft, or shy a few mm im stuck. As I don’t want a Smaller frame and have to run a 100mm stem! Any ideas?

    They’re £375 at the moment, that’s what’s tempting me!
Although the blue pig is down to £250!

Did you transfer across your genesis parts, or do a complete new build?

So is the BluePig more suited to downs and the piglet all rounder? Quite similar specs on geometry?

    philb88

I’m guessing the Marley is just the Alu version of the BluePig, as they seem very similar.

I’m looking for an all rounder really, not going to be chucking it off massive jumps. But don’t want to think I can’t batter it into rocks without a worry, as I’m not overly careful!!

The Makita mentioned above is great, but managed to get one for the same price last year with the 3.0mAh battery. Which is £70 on its own.

Screwfix had a special on, worth watching out for!

Got both Nanos and V8s, both great. V8s are a little thicker though.

Would love some 5.10s for £25 though!

Thanks guys, looks like all sorts of hassle with tensioners etc.
Would rather the no tensioner look, as with a tension may as well just keep a derailleur!

Even more stuff to research now

Probably get an S2000 with V8 LS1 conversion for under that budget…..

Have seen a wood drying kiln made from an old chest freezer.

As long as the seal is still tight then should be fine.
Needs a light bulb running inside (60w or so, not energy saver ones!)and a fan to circulate the air. A small drain in the lowest corner for any moisture and leave it sealed and running?

Have the 2011 Core 20 at the moment, and don’t fancy the new HT line up! Think I could be tempted by a cut price Grapil 20 though…

Grapil 20 2013 at £1450, seems at that price it’s not as badder buy as many thought at £2299

    It’s a 9spd.

Think I have a SRAM link hanging around, worth a shot. First time I have run a SRAM chain with Shimano groupset. Won’t try that again!

Chain was brand new out the packaging, so wasnt rust. Must of been the pin not right in, but the new link I did on trail looks and feels very similar..!
    Cheers
