No problem here, it’s my money, I spend it on what I want. And she can spend hers on whatever she chooses. As it is she doesn’t have that many handbags and we both have the same number of bikes.

I’m firmly in the bike and geometry is what to look at first. Wheel size is only important when you need to get tyres and tubes

While you’re probably right I just couldn’t bring myself to look at 29ers for my new bike, I’ve never even ridden one. I just expect them to feel unwieldy, and can’t get past it.

My 27.5 T130 is fun, nippy and nimble (cringed a bit reading that back).

    Wee cog?

    Cage

I use a RaceFace Stash for shorter rides. Spare tube, co2 & inflator and a mini tool.

And I’ve shortened them and they appear to still be working fine.
Will give them a quick bleed to make sure before I use it in anger.

The one I’ve ordered doesn’t, by my brakes aren’t bleeding edge (I don’t think).

    Ta
I’ll give it a go and see how I get on. Have just ordered the epic bleed kit.

Will be handy in the future for our proper bikes that also have SRAM brakes.

Decathlon must be running low then. They had it listed twice cheaper than it’s on there now.

I just got the XG1150 from decathlon, was the best price I could find (in the UK).

They also had cheap NX shifter and mech.

Why not just leave it as it is?

My bike is 1×11 (as is a project that I’ve just built). My old bike was 3×9 and I love the new 1x but unless anything was broken on a 2×10 set up then I wouldn’t change anything unnecessarily.

It depends on your riding but I guess the bossnut doesn’t have anything that big on the back (36T?) and there’s no way I’d get up a lot of what I ride in 36×36. I struggle with my 30×42 at times 8O

Wait until things start wearing out and then look at doing it. It does look cool though and I like just having one shifter

Still take an age to dry once they get soaked.
Is that based on personal experience?

Mine take days to dry and they let the water in pretty easily. There’s nothing really weather resistant about them.

I’ve had them in the past and gone back to flats. Like them for a bit of cross country and nothing too techy, but just can’t get on with being attached when things get more difficult.

I’ve just bought 5.10 Impacts and they seem like they’ll dry out much quicker than my Freerider ELCs (which are sold as “all weather”) that take about a week to dry on top of my boiler.

I think I’ve got a pair of unused shimano pedals if you want something cheap to try with, £10 posted if I can find them. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-pd-m520-pedals/

Great news if you are a punter and know what to do with a spanner
    Not really.

My local LBS’s let me try stuff on and are brilliant with advice, demos, route guidance etc.

Don’t really get the internet thing.

Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

    Long live the LBS.

Whilst I agree entirely with the sentiment, I’m lazy, impatient and very guilty of giving in to the convenience of clicking a couple of buttons and something arriving the next day. In 2 different sizes or colours to try on too. It’s just too easy these days, and not just with bike shops.

I do try and support my LBS for big purchases and the odd service etc. And if I’m buying a bike I want to at least see it before spending out. We’ve just bought ourselves new bikes and travelled nearly two hours to a not so local LBS because he had demo bikes available in various sizes and was great to deal with. My actual LBS is more set up for road bikes.

I bought the NX shifter and mech the other day.

And have a n XG1150 Cassette on the way, cheapest I could find.

So…. After all that I’ve just bought some 27.5 wheels with an XD Driver.

Luckily hadn’t bought a cassette yet.

If you want cheap and cheerful look at the brand x hardtail frame on CRC. 135mm qr, 120mm-130mm+, runs 27.5 but reading the reviews lots run it 26″, 68°, takes hollowtech. Not the coolest brand but great value at £75 in the sale just now. Nearly finished building one myself.

    POSTED 1 DAY AGO # REPORT-POST

Mine should be getting delivered today hopefully :-)

I was going to build it as a budget 26″ but I’m getting carried away, it’s now a budget 27.5″ using none of my parts from the bike I was going to cannibalise

Just need to find a fork.

    Any pics of yours?

Current motivation is good, I’m still really enjoying the new bike which helps.

And I’m about to build a little hard tail to mess around locally on.

Sounds silly but what helps is that we work shifts so have to plan a bit in advance – it’s amazing how much a Google calendar event helps to actually get you out the door.

I’m struggling to find anything that exciting on my doorstep, so we usually drive up to 2 hours.

The search goes on, but my last effort was a muddy, unexciting wet trudge.

    Don’t forget the thick/thin chainring.
I tried one of the cheapie 8 quid jobs via Amazon (SNAIL) and it’s fine.

Already coming with the cranks :)
    It’s a 32T GX.

And I’ve found a Shimano M7000 11-42 cassette on eBay for £40. I really would have preferred 11-46 but this is cheap.

    Thanks, all makes sense.

I’ve actually gone for the NX – chain, derailleur and shifter for about £60 and found a second hand crankset with (probably knackered) bottom bracket to go with it. NX only comes in Long but guess it’ll be OK if not totally ideal. Bear in mind this is a second/project/budget bike.

Just need to find a cassette to go on it now :D

Ooh, so SRAM NX Looks interesting…. (and cheap)

    Brilliant, thanks for the explanation.

I’m getting a bit swamped down in all the googling working out what works with what, so thanks for all the input.

    phil5556

    Cheers discjockey

I’m going to be building it initially from second hand / taken off my old bike so it’ll be mostly whatever I can find to get it up and running with a longer term plan to upgrade to new bits.

My “proper” bike is 1×11 and has a 30×10-42 and suits me so I’ll probably go for the same.

Why a medium and not long cage? What’s the difference in operation?

And finally will a Shimano cassette work with derailleur?

    Thanks

I did it on my 598s. There’s two grey plastic half turn clips underneath I think. Undo them and underneath is the bolts that hold it to the rail.

Would moving the upright clamp section backwards help? That’s what I had to do with mine, works fine.

    phil5556

Sweet cheers, sounds like my plan could be coming together.

Might be back with more specific questions later.

I’m aware that my shifters and mech won’t work etc and also my cranks are no good as I think the smaller 2 rings are fixed.

do you have a zero stack semi-integrated type at the moment?

Nope, I don’t have anything yet. Frame is still in the post.

    bigyinn – Member
    Just.
    Build.
    It.
    First.

I don’t even have it yet and needed to buy a headset so wanted to get the right one.

I’ve gone for that uberbike EC56 and will just build it with that. :D
And then faff about with changing anything if I need to.

    phil5556

    Or just an EC56? https://www.uberbikecomponents.com/view-product/Uberbike-1-18-to-15-Tapered-Headset-Ceramic-Bearings-Red

Not very common it seems and they don’t list the bottom stack height, but it must be 10mm+ ??

    phil5556
    Full Member

Yep, I think that’s it cheers.

So fit that in the bottom of the 56 tube and then send back my 56 headset and get something like this to fit in the extender https://www.evanscycles.com/cane-creek-40-series-is52-bottom-headset-EV144439

Don’t know if it’s the size you need, but Production Privee do such a spacer for their Shan GT for swapping between 29″ and 27.5″ wheels.

That is exactly what I’m looking for… but I don’t think it’s the right size

    It’s a 1 1/8 steerer at the moment with a 56mm headset.

    phil5556

Cheers all, seems like there’s not an easy off the shelf solution.

It’s the cheap Brand X HT-01 that CRC sell. My plan was to steal parts from my old and too small Genesis Latitude and build it at first as a 26er – hence my concern that it’s going to be too low with a 120mm 26 fork in it.

It’s mainly to keep me entertained in the garage over the winter.

Ultimately it will get rebuilt as it should be with a new fork and 27.5 as and when cheap bits can be found.

Csb – because that won’t change the head angle, it’ll just raise the bars.

    phil5556

Mattscm that sounds like what I want, was hoping someone made one.

I’ll have to build it up without and see how it is.

    phil5556

Eventually plan is to go from 26 to 27.5 and therefore a new shock.

But for now wondering if there was another way to do it.

I’ve found this, but not in 56mm :/

I’m with admiral. They claim that they will cover the bikes locked to an immovable object and the back of my van apparently counts as immovable. I discussed it with them and said I’d chain it to the towing eye with a gold sold secure chain. They seemed happy, not had to test it yet luckily.

Will check out pedal cover though.

It’s not a bad spec at all but I got a 2017 T130S for not much more, which I considered the better buy. I was all set to get the SR.

There’s a few places with the 2017 left, although the yellow/green I think is nicer than my orange.
