Checked round the pedal rotation and there was a slight loose spot so i’ve walked the wheel along the dropouts at the loose spot.
Chain nearly binds but not quite and i guess with a bit of stretch it’ll be ok. Hopefully that will fix it – else i’ll take the wrench to the chainring, but it really isnt warped much at all.
Thanks for the advice all..
petestuartFree MemberWell i agree with all of the above but must put forward a case for the newest album too – meo suo… endalaust or something like that… is also brilliant. In summary – get any of them, they’re all great…!
petestuartFree MemberThey’re both beautiful colours. Particularly like the green. Would make lovely fixed gears but i suspect you have something a bit more special in mind for them!
petestuartFree MemberWell done geoffj! I really quite like it. Not comparable to Holy Bible but best thing they’ve done since…
petestuartFree MemberIf you’re a fan then you’ll like it. Return to form over the MOR stuff they’ve been churning out since Ritchey vanished. I believe they’ve used Ritcheys lyrics for this album or something. Im enjoying it at least. Worth a few listens..
petestuartFree MemberI check the tip all the time and find nothing, same for skips. Curse you lucky skip/tip divers!
petestuartFree MemberJust googled the post code from the website – thats round the corner from my house! Would he mind people just dropping by?
petestuartFree MemberIn Southampton?! Exciting news as a local. They look like lovely frames…
petestuartFree MemberI use a dell – a refurbed one through mcscom.co.uk – cant recommend them enough. Got my inspiron and my parents inspiron through them. I had a fault with the dvd drive on mine and they replaced it no questions.
Obvisouly you dont get the support or preinstalled software (or even OS) that Dell offer but if you’re happy providing and installing all the software etc..
..Bargainalicious. Only minor scrapes to the case of mine – parents was as new. They’re in Fordingbridge in the New Forest but deliver also i believe.
petestuartFree MemberI personally thought this season was better than the first. First ep isnt all that but eps 2 and 3 are genius… Sugarlumps is the best!
petestuartFree MemberI advised my Dad got the normal 08model (non disc) in the Merlin new year sale. Had a quick blast up the road and seemed really great for the price – think he paid just under £200!
Only thing of note was that the forks were pretty soft/springy, just thinking about the larger lad comment. My dad is no lightweight though and seems to get on fine with it. Frame and kit is superb for the price. Not really considered the head angle. Certainly didnt seem overly steep to me. I ride an inbred with mxcomps for comparison. I’d be very happy if i’d spent £200 on the normal.
Obviously this is not the 09 currently on Merlin but dont think they changed much.
Hope that helps a little. I know i took a punt as nobody had any advice on the normal when i was looking.
petestuartFree MemberMy mistake. I looked a the decals quickly and assumed it was some custom singular. What is it? Its lovely.
petestuartFree MemberFlying lotus
Modeselektor
Burial
Venetian Snares
Prefuse 73
FourtetUsual Warp standards like Squarepusher, Aphex, Boards of Canada, Plaid, Nightmares on Wax, Clark etc….
Thanks for the playlist Surfr!
petestuartFree MemberI’ve got the same frame as you Mike. Been meaning to post pics as ive just got it up together for the summer. Perhaps i’ll get some tomorrow.
Anyway, ive got MX Comps on mine. 2005 i believe – no lockout unfortunately. I can see why with a 25 mile ride to the trail you’d want a lockout – (whispers) i’d probably get bored of SS over that distance…? Im sure i saw a pair of 105mm MX comps with eta on the classifieds yesterday for £60. Cant find them now, maybe i dreamt it! Cant fault my forks though. Would recommend them.
Found these but probably too steep for an inbred http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/fs-marzocchi-mx-comps-eta-120mm-1
And these, they’re long gone but might be an idea of price http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/fs-rockhox-reba-slpetestuartFree MemberIsnt it Roberta from Spotify? She’s only slightly less infuriating than the automated till at tescos ‘unexpected item in the bagging area’ Arrrrgggghhh!
petestuartFree MemberI think everyone is entitled to 50% off the cost of both loft and cavity wall insulation. The companies claim it back through your energy providers. We’re due to get our cavity wall done in a few weeks time. Im doing the loft myself.
Best thing is to check with the council – they’ll be able to put you in touch with their trusted installers also.
My local MP sent round this leaflet that gave me all the contact details etc. Sure its not exclusive to Southampton – http://www.alan-whitehead.org.uk/pdf/EnergySaver.pdf
petestuartFree MemberI’d also like to know where you got the decals from PeterPoddy! The orange looks awesome by the way!
petestuartFree MemberMTU is Maximum Transmission Unit. Im no IT bod – i had to google it.
After re-installing windows one time i couldnt access any secure sites that required a login such as email, ebay, paypal, online banking etc. I COULD still look at non secure sites like google or STW.
I googled the problem and some forums suggested changing the MTU. I looked up Tiscali’s MTU (grrr nasty Tiscali) and it was 1458. My router is set to 1500 as standard. Ignore the numbers (i dont understand them either). My router wouldnt let me change the MTU value but i could alter it on my wireless device using a peice of software called DRTCP. A tiny program that requires no installation (google it). Changing the MTU of my Belkin wireless USB thing to 1458 fixed my problem, and i could access all the secure sites again.
I dont know that this is your problem, so i dont know if this will fix it. You’ll also have to check the MTU of your provider if you think this might be the problem.
petestuartFree MemberI had this problem – couldnt access any secure site that required a password. Turned out to be the MTU rate. Possible solution is to check the MTU rate of your provider then change the settings on your router/modem – or use DRTCP if you can access the settings for either. Easy to fix – if that is your problem.
petestuartFree Member*high fives miketually*
Awesome response – end of thread surely (and the regular howies bashing please – there are far more apt targets for this kind of thing)
petestuartFree Membermt – glad to hear there are businesses, particularly manufacturers, who give a toss, and worry about the things that potentially their customers worry about. We need more of them, so well done you. Like you rightly say, the trouble with having ethics is that you have to live up to them – so often its all to easy to have none.
petestuartFree MemberThere is a difference between exploitative labour and getting the job done for a better price (and potentially better quality). Im sure (certain, positive, without doubt) that there are exploitative practices in China and Turkey such as sweatshop labour, but i would hope howies do not use these factories – hence their trip to China and the subject of this whole thread. You’re right mt, because howies projects itself as an ethical company it is likely their ethics will be held into quesition, as opposed to companies like Tesco who who couldnt care less.
Offshoring of work from any business is going to have a knock on effect for the future generations and their ability to find jobs. But arguably issue is with Britain becoming a service economy as Miketually mentioned. We cant rely on big businesses to keep jobs in the UK, because their main aim is profit – in the short term, for their shareholders. Not job security for our children. More’s the shame.
Miketually is right though about howies creating jobs. And arguably they are a company in a creative industry, traditionally a london based industry, and the programme mentioned was in support of them creating jobs in wales in such an industry.
Most companies would love to manufacture their own products, but for most outsourcing is the most viable option.
petestuartFree MemberI think the idea is that the product is NOT made in a sweat shop. Using factories used by companies like M&S piggybacks on the ethics of M&S who are known for their ethical production ethos.
Using UK production to a high quality is very expensive. Ask Buffalo, their products are made in Sheffeild i believe. Production in the UK does not guarantee quality either. Using UK seatshops – like primark allegedly do/have, would be exploiting UK workers. Surely nobody wants that? Also raw cotton (merino, bamboo etc) is not made in the UK. Transporting the raw material into the UK, then processing/manufacturing (at a higher cost) is probably second to using a factory in or closer to the site of the production of the raw material, i.e. Turkey (for much of howies cotton) NZ (merino), and then importing. UK manufacturing is fairly non-existant. The root cause of this would probably need a thread of its own, if not a forum of its own! It is certainly not the fault of a small clothing company on the west coast of wales!
petestuartFree MemberMaking clothes abroad does not necessarily mean they are made in sweat shop conditions. Indeed, making them in the UK does not mean they are NOT made in sweatshop conditions. Such is the need to visit your factories to check on their conditions.
From what i recall, Howies have typically used factories used by bigger companies with a good reputation for production i.e. M&S. Nevertheless, visiting these factories is a good idea. IF howies had decided to fly someone over there to check up on the factories what would all the haters say then? Not only is using alternative forms of transport, for what i see as a necessary journey, in keeping with howies ethics but yes, also their marketing ethos. They are in business to make money after all, so surely we cant blame them for using this opportunity to market themselves. I find the whole idea very interesting and look forward to not only hearing about the journey but also the conditions that some of the clothes i wear are made in.
Yes howies are expensive when compared to most cheap high street clothes. But anything of comparable quality is just as expensive in my eyes, if not more. Coupled with that, other manufacturers cannot comment on the conditions of the manufacture of their products and do not have the sort of dedication to materials and their source that howies appear to have.
All companies are in business to make profit and advertising is a part of this. I admit that i buy in to the howies ideal. I appreciate (even enjoy) that they write good copy and market themselves well, but i also find them to be the most transparent and honest of companies, while producing high quality products. Surely the world could benefit from more companies following the lead of howies other simliar businesses?
I can think of many many more companies more worthy of a regular slating on the internet. Now where’s Tim March – I like it when he puts the haters in their place.
petestuartFree MemberNice one Tang. Hadn’t heard of this but it looks great. Collaborative playlists… STW attempt soon??
petestuartFree MemberCheers for this gustard_cannet. Dowloading now.
Bloc lineup looks awesome. Wish i could afford it. Aphex, Modeselektor and Jamie Lidell! Would love to see RDJ again in any guise.
petestuartFree MemberQwerty – i know, see original post. Just wanted to see those from the STW massive in particular.
petestuartFree MemberSent back three pairs in the past. Either replaced FOC, fixed FOC or replaced with heavy discout – they were 8 years old. Cant praise Oakley customer service enough.
petestuartFree MemberFit, reminds me of Kylie. Its the lips and the blonde hair. Friday Kelly? ALthough i’m sure she wasnt so hot in casualty…
petestuartFree MemberCheers guys. Some good stuff to look at.
Keavo – good site. Theres plenty on there that look good.
Ambrose – ideal location, might enquire about that barn conversion.
Thanks everyone though!
Pete
petestuartFree MemberMy dad was exactly the same. In fact probably a lower budget. For the money both he was, and your dad is looking at – i couldnt find a better deal than the Commencal Normal V-brake on Merlin. He paid just over 200 inc postage; 24 speed, 100mm Suntour forks w/lockout, disc compatible hubs (shimano centrelock), good rims and tyres, sdg bel air saddle, pedals thrown in too. Frame seems good, and a good base to upgrade when and if he wants to. He’s really happy with it.
GT’s and Spesh’s with anything close to that spec were twice the price.
If his budget was any more i’d have pushed for a merlin malt 1 though.
