Is it on the telly at all?

Our chimney had no lintel. Admittedly it is Victorian – 1896 – we took it up as far as we wanted then I put a concrete lintel in. Used some slate off cuts to level it and then filled in the brick work that has inevitably fallen during the process. Got it plastered over.

Bit scary to discover there wasnt one and has to be pretty delicate removing bricks – as you say the mortar was dust..!

I had one and it would gain 10 minutes over about a fortnight. Shame – quite liked the quirky simplicity of it. I guess thats what you get for £10!

Trust me. Becoming a teacher will just make you consider the self employed/business owner avenue even more. I'm pretty sure miketually would agree with me on this one – and any other teachers on here!

Very jealous. I'd love to live round that way. Isn't Exemoor basically on your doorstep. There's bound to be loads. Quantocks are a reasonable drive away as well. Plenty of riding… surfing, walking and practically anything else you care to do outdoorsy round there!

Mine arrived from 7dayshop today. Ordered for 12.99 with no microSD – It arrived with an 8gb class 4 card already installed. Plus an array of clips etc to attach it to things! Absolutely astonishing mega bargain – best of all it actually works! Instructions are useless and date function is fiddly but a bit of googling sorts it out. Cant wait to play with it now.

+1 TTC – they've done quite a bit with Modeselektor which is really good

Bothy looks good, thanks for that, but if the weather is good i'd quite like a wild camp somewhere. Food would be the issue I think. With sleeping kit on the bike squeezing food and maybe a stove feels like a sizable load.

I'm considering this too – only with a bivvy half way. Any extra tips given that slight alteration to the OP's plan? Kit advice?

    Sorry for the hijack.

Don't have an Abyss – but bought a Core 40 a couple of months back and I think its ace. Feel very confident when riding it and cant grumble about the parts or the price – ok, the seat clamp is a bit guff…! Other than that I LOVE it.

Toms Field… Langton Matravers near Swanage. One of my favourites. No frills but will take campervans with hook-ups in one field and its a short drive to Lulworth.

Toilets/showers/little shop – right on the coastal path, lovely walk to dancing ledge, Winspit and The Sqaure and Compass at Worth Matravers. Even better stagger back in the dark – guess it depends on the 'family' aspect of the trip.

Cheers for the advice. I'm in Devon often – wife's family are there – so might just pop in to Gulf Stream next time.

    Thanks.

Changing the direction of chat slightly but this seems like the thread with those in the know.

Been surfing during summer trips to north Devon and Gower with my wife, and hiring boards for week/weekend periods over the last couple of years. Really enjoying it but we feel it would be more cost effective to buy a board if I'm going to continue, whats the next step up from a foam top board? I'm thinking about a hardboard- something like a bic/nsp minimal size 7'6 ish…? I'm 5'9 and 11st. I know the popouts get a bad rep. Any suggestions from the hive?

Sounds like im in the market for some new forks then – hell its cheaper that playing out for a LT hardtail and means I can wind it down for something more XC when needed. I'm not heavy, or RAD, so sounds like it'll be ok.

In fact I'm planning the same route as you Nuke (although I'm not 853)

    Cheers guys.

Did the Sunday in London last year. I ached for days. So so awesome! Considering the Green Belter this year, also did the Horseplay 10k early this year – all by the same company.

I guess I wonder if the front will just as low on the 456 as it is on the original inbred – is it simply the running of longer forks that give it a more relaxed trail/less over the bars xc feel…?

Slight thread resurrection, sorry – Im just planning a similar thing.

Considering a change from std inbred (the 80-100mm DN6 white one) to 456 – with 100mm forks will it be exactly like the inbred or a bit more sit up, rather than head down bum up on the inbred? Not sure on the geometry of the old inbred – just finding it a bit too xc these days… Long and low.

Not much matches my Vail. Best baselayer IME, however I recently saw the Finisterre merino tee's and was impressed. Cheaper too. If I was looking for a baselayer I'd certainly go for one of those two.

Tried wifinder, but thank you. It will find wireless networks fine. Just wont connect properly. I googled the problem and it seems there lots and lots of people with the same problem… would be intrigued to hear what stw-ers experience of the hero wifi are…

Love my HTC hero – only really annoying thing about it is its reluctance to connect to wifi. Wont do it in my house, or round my parents. A known issue apparently with the handset and some routers…. quite common though. Doubly annoying that my friends G1 will connect to my wifi, as will another chums iphone… Grrrr.

Other than that its superb. Hopefully the next ROM update will fix wifi issues….

Call a chimney sweep in first to get opinions on condition of chimney before deciding on lining it etc. Although if you dont line it you might not want to tell building control – I'm guessing you're not miving soon though having just moved in!

We have a similar sized room and a similar purpose (secondary heating etc). We needed no lining according to the sweep – so I installed it all myself. Meant we could afford a posh hearth too so we got an old billiard table slate cut to fit the chimney breast! Beautiful!

Got a Charnwood Country 4, its great looking and very, very hot. Its currently blazing away now – 4Kw is just fine for us. Thats with no door on the room either so the heat spreads throughout the house. Doesn't heat the whole house but the heat of the lounge with the stove in does not suffer for the lack of doors – if that makes sense..

To back up some of the above – we're burning wood. Not sure what the implications are for smokeless zones – smokeless coal? Therefore can't comment on the output of a 4Kw stove with smokeless coal. Most wood burning stoves can be made multifuel stoves by adding an optional grate though.

I won't join in with the howies bashing as I feel like it happens on here once every other week or so, and its always the same arguments..

My understanding it that David Hieatt quit for reasons over the Timberland part-ownership. In an interview with the Times he said they still had full creative control, but apparently not enough if he quit!

From his tweets since leaving it sounds like he's moving into denim production, although i thought he couldnt work within fashion for a year. He mentioned seeing a patent lawyer on twitter so perhaps developing a technical fabric?

At any rate his wife still remains at howies so he still has a fairly direct involvement. Someone I know who'd spent time at howies speculated that he planned on being away for a year in order to raise funds to buy howies back…

I for one am very intersted to see what he does next and will no doubt be sucked in and 'along for the adventure!'

Sorry – maybe you did have to be there.

To explain – The customer was suggesting that the squealing brakes might be fixed by taking the same approach to fixing a squealiing hinge – lubricant. I heard the whole conversation – albeit only one side of it admitedly.

Samuri's is funnier. Or perhaps i mean genuinely funny.

    Apologies again!

There a metric bumload of off-the-peg fixies around. For something a bit trick like the freestyle why not just convert an old road bike. Podercoat your own colour, choose your parts and likely come up cheaper than the freestyle with higher quality parts.

Also means if you havent tried fixed before you can convert an old roadie cheap before tidying it up! Thats what i did. Bought someone elses cheap conversion of ebay.

That said i do like the plug.

MCSCOM are pretty good for refurbed Dells. Year warranty, good service, great price, all new accesories avaiblable too. Moitors and printers there are very cheap, but then Dell printers cartridges cost your first born…

They’re based in Fordingbridge so not far for you to pick it up but they deliver too. bought my last two PC’s from there. Definately recommend.

    Thanks Scaredypants!

Went to Canada Common. Loads of space, surprisingly quiet, rounders bat shattered after first bowl (!) but we made friends with a baby donkey instead. Day saved. Rockinghams Arms is now ‘The Rockingham’. Trendy modern/posh makeover. Again was very quiet, they’ve made a nice job of it but its not very … foresty…!

Thats the summary. Cheers for the advice…
