The markings are “spalting” caused by fungus. Can create excellent patterns, after turning and burnishing danish oil brings it out really well.

Looks like it may be beech, (no pun intended)

    Ski,
Sounds like you’ve done enough turning to know every cut is different.

I’ve succesfully used cable ties on the outside diameter of workpieces
when turning bowls to hold it together where there are natural holes, softer patches or bark sections.

You can turn driftwood but you’ll need a lathe with a big swing (large diameter capacity ) to turn that.

So privately my £160 appears OK.

NHS charging structure would be £65.50, 40% of the private charge.

I will have to look at the availablility of NHS dentists round here, that’s £95 difference I would rather spend on something else.

Depending on the gearbox sometimes selecting another gear first and then reverse works.

In my car 5th is above reverse, I automatically now select 5th gear and then reverse.

Start doing the turn really slowly to get the movement right.

You do have to twist at some point to get face down again, I tend to do this before pushing off from the wall as you get a better glide that way.

Judging the distance before the wall to initiate the turn is critical, too far out and you have no push off whereas close in you can still make contact with the wall.

Try starting off with breast stroke to get the distance right.
( I know technically the breast stroke turn is not a tumble for racing )

And stick to the deep end until you get the turn tight and neat.

    Dan,

After getting all spokes positions I realised I hadn’t “woven” them together, you know, over then under the neighbouring spoke.
Frustrating having to undo every spoke, so try to avoid this.

The first one I did was a back wheel, got it round and true and the fitted it to the bike to discover it wouldn’t turn.
I hadn’t built in the offset to accomodate the gear cluster and move the rim into the middle of the chain stays.

Someone above suggested starting with a front wheel, this is possibly why!

I wonder how many people know what an AJP8 is ?

Heard a few on a tunnel run last weekend, also great on the over run.

If you go down the wooden gears route you can download gear template generation software, a search on wooden gears for clocks should find one.

Also, buy good birch ply. Lesser quality ply is difficult to cut the teeth profile from.

I can’t beat the mph figure but kept the trip computer running for about four years running a Berlingo, covering about 70,000 miles.

Over that time most of the mileage was motorway commuting but with congestion at the end.

    Average Speed 32 mph.*
Fuel Consumption 37 mpg* (1.6 petrol)

Like you I was surprised how low my average speed was.

Recent experience using Android is that I was charged additional for data as the overseas use was not included in my contract.

It wasn’t cheap, £40 over 2 weeks and covering 2500 miles.

Main advantage was typing in campsite names and the satnav system being able to identify them.

Worked brilliantly across France and Spain.
As mentioned above, no idea on the iphone.

Just checked that out but the changes don’t tie in neatly and overall it would take an estimated 50 minutes longer than the Paddington option, which would be really tight for the l;ast start time at 9.00am.

    Thanks evryone,

Tube straight through to East Putney looks good, not having to change is definately a benefit. Easy navigation and warm up to the start from there. Google maps gives 2 miles to the start.

Further bike on tube shocker, is there an allocated bike carriage or do I just join the fight with everyone else.

Andy / Kimbers thanks for price guide on a Taxi, that is right out.
By comparison train from Gloucestershire to Paddington – £8.00 !

    PeterStarkiss

Kimbers, I’ve got an hour between arriving at Paddington and getting to the start, from feedback above it looks like it may be tight.

Andy_B, I didn’t know you could take bikes on the tube, I’ll take a look at Google maps on that idea.

Any guesses on Taxi costs, this is still looking like a good option but I don’t want to jump in and have a shock on pricing. Around here it would be about a tenner, I guess significantly more in London.

    Ty Morgans,

Stayed there a couple of weeks ago, excellent food and drink.

Didn’t visit any other places so can’t comment but as and when I go back to Rhayader I’ll go back.

May not technically be a pub, but on a Thursday night it was busy, good atmosphere, staff were excellent.

Having gone through this a few years ago the cost of the stone is a major variable, we looked at some lovely stone but it was only available in very limited supply which meant the cost was massive.

There was a charge per letter carved, which varied from hand carving to water CNC cutting.

Then two people to visit site to erect the stone after the ground had settled.

All in I think is was £1200 / £1300, but I believe that included the VAT.

Roman Glass – Stroud have been recommended to me for replacement glazing units. Neighbours have used them.

Have used Joedan in Tewkesbury for doors, they do windows as well.
    They were excellent.

Thanks to everyone for the info, all of which led me to speak to the Major controlling the whole training area.

Turns out to be a keen mountain biker and was really helpful, end result is that having gone over the grid references of our route we are OK to proceed.

Does that mean anything that is on the OS map as a track, unmade road is OK ? There is also a small bit of bridlepath on our route.

Have you looked at Khyam tents.

Our Tourer 400 is years old so wil have been replaced by a newer model however the “spider leg” design with the material attached to the poles mean they are easy to erect with one person.

Central living area, bedroom at either side.

The central living zone can be up in 5 minutes which gives some shelter whilst you sort out the rest.

We’ve had ours about 6, maybe 7 years, still looking good and kept some heavy rain out two weekends ago.

Update, just looked for a link and it appears they are making it again

If you have a Sony Bravia TV and buy a Sony Blu Ray Player the one (TV) remote control will work both units.

The two integrate together very well.

Shop around, I found a good Blu Ray player on offer and it was worth buying, can’t say I notice much difference in quality but as our DVD player had failed it seemed like the way to go.

We recently took on an allotment, but there is no water supply so I built this rainwater harvesting system.
One small roof 2 square meters, flowing into a 1000 litre tank.

There is another 1000 litre tank further down the plot used for topping up from the top one.

Hozelock connectors from each tank means we have hose pipes to cover the whole plot.

    Denno,

I’ve got a Muvi VCC003 which is the smaller less high tec version of what you are looking at. Build quality, operation and accesories are really good and if you shop around good value for money.

My muvi came with 2GB memory card which is fills up rapidly, 8GB gives about two hours filming but that is the maximum memory the camera can deal with, if the hd10 can handle more that would be good.

Helmet mount, handlebar mount, car mount etc are all available, good quality and work well. Underwater kit looks good but I’ve not tested it yet.

From the tiny lens this is never going to win an Oscar for cinematography but for the cost I’m impressed.

I have used windows movie maker for editing, the camera is recognised as an external hard drive and you import avi files, fairly straight forward.

I know quite a few people who have had bypass surgery from my cardiac rehab group. Generally in pretty good shape considering,

First big positive is that the surgery was pre heart attack.

Recovery is measured in months not weeks, most of the guys would say a year before they were back to most activties and that’s a relative term.

There is some great rehabilitation available (can only speak for where I live) make the most of it. If there is a gym based group available ( we are talking 3 to 4 months post opp ) that’s really useful for keeping in touch with people with similar issues and talking to them.

I though I remembered Binners on the snow ride, I think the general consensus was that it was hard going, I think whoever was leading cut it slightly short before limbs dropped off.

    IHN,

Couple of Christmas’s ago, met at the car park near The Kilkenny on a snowy day. Route went out round Colesbourne, Withington and many other snow covered hillsides, tough route as I remember but good ride.

    1) Yes, Your assumption is correct. Ride from the door, plenty of challenging uphills, great downhills off the commons and through woods.
Plenty of areas to link together towards Cranham, Painswick, Nailsworth, Dursley.

    2) I’d love to know? Most of my cycling is by myself. Interested in the replies to this. I did one ride with the Cotswold Massiv, figured they had become even more niche! Where do we find information?

    3) There are some excellent pubs selling beer from local breweries in Uley, Stroud and Nailsworth. Finding a good pub will not be an issue.

    Re: House Hunting.
Check the aspect of any house, sunny side of the hill at different times of the day. Some of the valley bottoms are dark and cold, get a sunny spot on the hillside and you have epic views and evening sun.
Parking can be a major issue, offroad parking may be important. If you want an example of this drive through Chalford or Woodchester on your house hunting trips. Narrow roads, cars everywhere.

Coming from a slightly different angle, whatever new toy you choose you will end up going to club meetings or tunnel runs as it becomes a hobby and interest.

Worth checking out local clubs, meetings and runs. Meeting up with other owners can be useful for sharing info, suppliers, servicing, just like singletrack really. I am not a club person but the odd run out with other owners is good fun.

Pistonheads forums for the make of car and your area give an idea of whats happening.

    Bowglie,

One thing I’ve learnt over the last year is that every cardiac issue is different and the cardiology consultants are the ones to listen to and work with.

I record heart rate data during exercise, at rest and take regular blood pressure measurements, they are quite useful for self monitoring and also at checkups.

Good you are talking to them now, I found the thing that really affected my riding was the heart attack, I would have settled for all sorts of odd side effects to have avoided that.
