Long term on beta blockers after heart issues.

I max out at 145 bpm. It’s like the rev limiter on your car.
Uphills I hit my maximum and stay there whilst everyone else cruises off into the distance.

No problem to me but must be odd when you are not expecting it !

Not seen it, but may just be what you are looking for.

Assume as you’ve fitted another shifter and this works friction between the inner and outer cable is not the problem.

I’ve had exactly the same problem which turned out to be muck and water in the X9 shifter just making the mechanism sticky. Plus there is a “tension” screw from the base of the shifter up through the body that needs to be correct.

They are a fiddle to dismantle, I took photos on my phone at each stage so I could refer to these and placed every component the right way up on a clean tray as they were removed.

Cleaned everything, light oil and rebuild and it’s been fine ever since.

There are a few youtube videos that show the process and I also found a lot of images just using Google and the image option that helped.

Another tip is that it is possible to convince yourself that the two main springs can be transposed, they can’t. Physically there is a fit but it won’t work. Taking out everything in order and will prevent this mistake.

Having done this a couple of times I would be happy to do the job again.

    Kryton,
Quite surprising when you see the photos. Also quite reassuring.

I’ve been in the workshop and seen his work. Just handling those tiny parts precisely is fascinating. There are no shortcuts with a watch like that.

    Kryton,

I’ve just posted on another thread about watch repairs and service.
I’ll just copy and post my input as it’s valid in this context.

OP can I recommend Christian at http://watchguy.co.uk

Take a look at the website and you will see documented repairs of some intricate and very nice watches.
He will give you a price and stick to it and I can vouch for how meticulous and accurate his work is.

He will only take on work where he can effect a proper repair and having seen the start and finish conditions of some of the watches he has worked on it’s very impressive.

I should state I’ve know Christian for quite a few years, he is a friend, a craftsman and passionate about watches.

    SaxonRider,

Just had a text reply from Lee, they are definitely open this weekend from 10.00am.

I’ve been using the course over the past four years approx. and whilst I don’t go frequently I know Lee well enough to say that he’s always been generous with his time and training when I’ve taken new archers to site.

Last time I was there, late last summer they were completing the wooden office building. The operation has been mainly weekends whilst Lee has built up the volume of targets although I believe the plan was that Ryan (his son) was going to start opening on weekdays.

I always use Lee’s mobile number which is the one on the website and I generally send a text before travelling just to make sure they are open.

It is a great course and you can easily spend a day there, although new archers will find their arms aching well before that, better to pace yourself.

Hope you manage to make contact and arrange a session. I’ll send him a text to check things.

    Leon,

Lots of rain here this morning so the ground is wet, having said that.

The section from Scrubbett’s Farm to Ozleworth Park will have surface mud initially where the trail is used by farm vehicles, after the first gate it’s a rocky surface into the valley and up the other side, it’ll be fine. Don’t over cook it, the bends tighten up, but a great downhill. Look out for the bridle path signs when you get near the house, you go right rather than going through the big arch into the courtyard.

Tyley Bottom is always wet and the trail can be tricky to follow, look out for the removable sections in the wooden fences going down across the first field.
(If I was going that way I’d veer left past Fernley Farm and take the trail SW round Newark Park, good surface although there will be leaves and excellent downhill bouncing over rain bars, but I have the benefit of knowing the area.)

Back to the trail you want to know about, the high points around North Nibley drain well and you’ll be fine up there, pinch points or where horses have been will be a messy but nothing too bad.

The ride has plenty of tarmac sections to clear mud, as long as you have decent clearance between tyres and frame you’ll be fine, it’s only Tyley Bottom that will be boggin, so wear your winter boots.

Weather looking Ok tomorrow so should be OK.
It’s a great area to explore, enjoy it.

Should say, I don’t mind the mud, once I’m out it doesn’t matter, so what I think is OK may differ to others !

Recently looked into the options and went for Planet X straight rollers for £120. They are very good, metal rollers, enclosed bearings and very quiet.
Same units available under another name at twice the price.
Frame folds up for easier storage.

    Alan,

I had a heart attack four years ago, I know from my rehab group that everyone recovers differently and you will find there is a lot of support out there.

It took me 6 months before I had the strength to get back on a bike and then it was on the flat very short distances, building up slowly.
Probably took a year until I was reasonably fit.

I’m now riding better off road than I was pre attack and did London to Bath (on road)earlier this year.

What I find is that I have a maximum heart rate, I can’t exceed this and as a result I’m slow uphill and I can’t attack trails like other people.

Re: Travel insurance. British Heart Foundation website used to have some information on this. Yes you can get it and as you would expect it costs a lot.

Kaidomain Battery Box arrived this morning, photos below.

Overlooking the long delivery time, ( and to be fair they did keep me informed throughout ), the box looks and feels good, well made and rugged.
No idea whet the blue button and what the three small “lights” / plastic blobs do. Maybe when I put some batteries in and test it this will be apparent.

Connectors are shown in the photos.

Re: security. I guess specs vary but I have proper sealed double glazing. Door has a proper lock, don’t know what spec. I’ve put mirrored film on the side that can be overlooked so contents can’t be seen.

Bought a shed / cabin from them six years ago.

Went for the 40mm thick timber option and treated every piece thoroughly before assembly (timbers are delivered untreated )which does take a lot of time and you need somewhere to stack the timbers and let them dry..

Build was straight forward and the multi grooved faces go together snugly with a rubber mallet.

You really need two people for the roof timbers as they are quite chunky and heavy.

Six years on, it’s not moved, no rot (but I did heavily treat the wood) has never leaked and yes, it was / is good value for money.

Re: Delivery. They did stress that it’s kerbside delivery so bear that in mind if you have to move a few hundred timbers from the pavement to where you are building the cabin.

OP, interesting post as I’m in exactly the same situation.

Have looked at KTM bikes, Lycan 274 which seem to offer a lot for the money.
Few deals around on the web with 2014 bikes.

    Darren,

Totally agree with comments above about using cycling glasses to stop dust, mud and dry eyes.

On two occasions I’ve not used glasses and had muck in my eye which resulted in delamination of one eye. Effectively the surface of the eye blistered with the contact lens still in place. Condition disappeared after a few days but alarming at the time and not recommended.

Now, I don’t know if this was down to the contact lenses or just my eyes but it highlights the value of riding glasses.

Other than those two occasions absolutely brilliant.

If you want a ride around Nailsworth there’s a weekly ride from Black 8 Bikes every Wednesday. Leaves the shop at 6.30pm, out for a couple of hours round the local hills and woods ( so you’ll need lights .

Good way of getting to know the local terrain but quite a way from Cheltenham.

Great information so far, thanks guys.

My preference is always to get out in the hills so I tend to use rollers when its dark, wet and cold or currently for training between real rides.

That being the case I’m looking at the “good quality cheaper” end of the market rather that the Rolls Royce.

Jet Blacks and Planet X are looking good currently.
Pleased I asked as yesterday CycleOps were looking favourite.

MrBlobby, are these the ones ?
Look good value to me, same as Cycle Ops but £60 less!

    Thurman.

Entrance to Buckholt Wood (Penn Wood) is easy to miss, it’s off the B4066 not far past the driveway to Woodchester Mansion, single wooden gate on the left.
If you get as far as the Gliding Club you’ve missed it.

As it gets later in the year we tend to leave later.
At the moment it’s a case of grabbing the daylight but when it’s dark from minute one it makes no odds.

Let me know if you want some route information but for starters here’s a good loop.

Nailsworth to Shortwood, via Lower Lutheridge Farm to Nympsfield.
Head towards Woodchester Mansion and then into Penn Wood area. There are trails that run along the escarpment to Selsley Commmon.
Head to the highest point on the common and keep going through the bombholes to the cattle grid opposite Water Lane.
Down Water Lane into Woodchester. Cycle trail back to Nailsworth.

    Thurman,

There is ride out every Wednesday night from Black 8 Bike, (on the A46 just past Egypt Mill). Between 5 and 12 riders most weeks, leave the shop at 6.30pm for 10 to 12 miles on local trails around Nailsworth.
The level and speed depends on who is out that night.

You’ll need lights this time of year as it’s surprisingly dark in some of the wood and valleys quite early. Usually end at the Brittania by 8.30pm.

Luke, who runs Black 8 is a good no bullshit mechanic.

If you want a details of a few ride I can let you have tracklog files or Strava details but coming out on a Wednesday is a good way of getting to know the area with no navigation issues.

    SPDs definitely.

The best way of reducing weight is reducing it off me and I’m hoping the next few weeks will see that happen.

I’ll take a few essentials on a beam rack so there’s nothing on my back. Tools, pump, malt loaf, gels, phone, waterproof.

This weekend’s ride was 30 miles, looking at 45 this weekend, 55 then 65 miles. If I can get to that level I should be OK.

Well done for spotting the damage whilst you were still on site.

I had a classic “closing the door with keys in hand” scratch on the drivers door but didn’t notice until the next day.

Nothing I could do to prove it was done on site, still there today and still annoys me.

    Yes,

We can add our offspring to our policies for a week at a time.
£72 week for one car and £40 per week for the other.

Compared to the increased annual premium it’s better value but still seems steep when you are asked to insure for two weeks.

There is a limit to the total amount of additional weeks we can insure for.

Just remembered on my policy they have to be minimum 21 years old
    so that needs checking.

    Hubs are 32 spoke.

Just checked CRC and you are right 28 hole only although the Mavic website suggests you can get 32 hole XM819s.

Probably explains the 57% price reduction !
    Thanks for the tip.

Met Camilla a couple of times riding around Tetbury.

Both times she smiled and said hello, I was pleasantly surprised.

    Renton,

Had exactly the same with our springer.
The best description is that she suddenly appeared to be drunk, uncoordinated, big eyes, panting, falling over.

This was about 11 o’clock at night.
Called the vet and took her to the surgery, diagnosis in that case was probable food poisoning / poisoning via something she had eaten.

Vet squirted liquid charcoal down her throat as an absorption effort, as you can imagine that’s a really messy process with a resistant springer.

A day resting and she was back to normal.

That’s my experience but I agree with the above, visit the vets.
(Top Tip: Far cheaper in the day than a late night call out )

Velcro strap is meant to keep the muscle close to the bone and reduce the tendency to break away and cause more pain. I find this helps when riding but I’ve been suffering since November so my advice has limited credibility!

Do you happen to know a falconer or anyone with a bird of prey that could fly around a bit. Saw this being used to remove seagulls last week.

You can get bird of prey shaped kites, farmers use them to keep other birds off crops.

Is it a sram attack shifter by any chance ? They have a 2:1 ratio, you are looking for 1:1.
That would explain the double shift.

    PeterStarkiss
    Free Member

Have you fitted the 6mm spacer shown on the linked thread ? This alters the pull ratio slightly so it works.
What you describe sounds way off however.
I have the shimano clutch 10 speed mech with an x7 shifter and it indexes perfectly.

Only thing I would mention is the clutch makes the lever a bit harder to push.
