I did a run with my Suunto at lunch, and it’s gone a bit haywire on the second half. Lost the road completely, and then a straight line. Probably about 12.30ish

Shame, as it was my fastest time.

I’m quite surprised about escape bags.

How bad is it that the thought of running away is always there?

I don’t have an escape bag. If things got that bag either

    a) I’d just get a bag together

    or

    b) all my stuff would be on the front lawn, and I could get a bag together out of that.

we spend mine – everything goes on it; the object is to get it as close to zero as possible each month

my wife saves hers, for big expenses (cars/holidays/bathrooms), and rainy days.

Most joint expenses comes from the joint account

We each do our own pensions (though we know the status of each). She looks after the savings/mortgage. I have a few savings accounts that I don’t know much about, and have no idea what’s actually in them. This is a good thing!

She has a credit card on my account; that pretty much covers everything. She has her own; solely for hair cuts (i’d be shocked…) and if I’m lucky my birthday present. She notes down all (most!) expenditure, and logs it in a spreadsheet each month

Her dad was a bank manager. It rubs off. He’s in charge of the kids’ savings (we can’t be, due to tax on interest rules). Again, I have no idea what’s in them.

There needs to be a certain amount of trust between you. But we’ve been together 23 years, so there is a hint of trust now.

I never wanted to be like my [great] aunt and uncle; when he died, she had no idea. Had never signed a cheque etc etc

we had a couple of those Intex Explorer ones in @mrovershoot’s photo. For use on the Thames in summer

First one split. Got a free replacment. Replacement punctured. Got a free replacement. Other one then split. Got a free replacement.

    See the trend?

We gave the brand new one away to the school fete as an auction prize. We’ve still got the other in the garage.

We then bought some Tootega Pulse sit on tops. Two small ones, and a double.

Much better for pootling around. Incomparable. Superb in fact.

The inflatables take ages to blow up, take up almost as much room as a normal one, and you’re always fearful of roots/branches/gravel. Etc

However, they were only £80 each. A decent inflatable maybe a lot better…

    as to the

those people perhaps didn’t see the best of it

i lived there six months. Living in Glebe, working in the office at the RBG. Had a NYE there, Xmas on Bondi. All of that. If anything doing that is possibly more likely to make it ‘just another city’.

But when the local pub (Toxteh Hotel) offers ‘Ladies’ Nights’ with a free glass of fizz with a strawberry in it, you realise culture hasn’t (hadn’t – twenty years ago remember) hit yet…

we did most of australia (years ago, admittedly)

north of cairns was lovely, cairns was horrible

the whole gold coast (inc brisbane) – basically just benidorm. With big spiders and snakes.

Adelaide – you need to be 70+ to fit in. EDIT – there a week. Did the wine tour, stayed in Glenelg. Still not worth it…

Canberra. Don’t bother. EDIT – war memorials are good. We did the library, the parliament (went to the republican debates, which dates us). Still not enough to warrant actually going

Sydney – a city. Could be anywhere. But the RBG – my old office – and the bridge are great.

Melbourne – nicer than the above, more interesting, better scenery. Walking around Lorne, and along the GOR was lovely.

Ayers Rock (Uluru now I think) and Alice. If you want to climb, go now. It’ll be closed soon. But climbing at that time of the year isn’t recommended (and they’ll often close it by 10am as too hot). Kings Canyon is nicer.

Perth (and fremantle) – best by far. Lovely city, lovely atmosphere, the Pinnacles and Hangover Beach are superb. Fremantle is ace.

If i were to go back, it would be to Perth…

I have a viking; one of these. We have a lot of steps to carry it up, and a steep garden in places. Lot of rubbish from the trees as well

It is excellent. Takes a lot of abuse. Plastic deck, so a bit lighter. Came with a mulching attachment so can do both.

They do one with a roller as well…

The navigation is better than it was, but as mentioned it needs a phone.

A brewpub? A burger? An epic destination? Where ever you want to go, ELEMNT can take you there! Just open the ELEMNT companion app at any point in your ride and start typing either the address or name of your destination. The companion app will then generate a cycling optimized route and send it to your ELEMNT, complete with turn-by-turn pop ups. Put your phone away and ride! Now ELEMNT can literally take you anywhere!

How do people find this on the Element / Bolt’s monochrome screen?

Fine for me. Just means you can see it in bright sunlight (unlike my BiL’s 520 last Sunday). And if backlit, you can see it in darkness.

The route following is very good, to the extent I’ve carried it when walking in the lakes. Coupled with a suunto watch (with route), you know you’ll never come off the path.

Can you have it set up to use the LED’s for eg: HR monitoring but then they switch to navigation as well when needed?

this is what I do. The LEDs automatically go for navigation at turns if you’re following a route. Can be a pain on a steep hill coming up to a junction when your heartrate suddenly disappears off the elemnt. You think you’re dead.

how they stand up to real world conditions in all weathers over a period of years?

I’ve had my elemnt 18 months now. Used it in all weathers – heavy rain, continual incessant drizzle (for 5 hours), snow, -5c temps. Three hour night cycles. Off road, on road. It’s never had an issue. And will still have uploaded to strava by the time I’ve walked up the drive. It’s been excellent.

the live link from the elemnt does work well, but I’ve found it does train the phone battery quite a lot (down to about 40% after a 5 hour ride)

    petec

been with them since they came out. Wife helped introduce it (and the now binned TV), and consequently never had any issues (apart from when we were deliberately breaking things to train the helpdesk)

decent speed (and they now reduce the bill if it’s not fast enough), decent guest set up (to keep the kids on a separate network), but at the end of the day you’re still using the wires BT etc will use

Just as an aside, and I can’t see it mentioned in the thread so apologies if it has already been covered, but i take it you are aware that the fines for speeding and the like were overhauled last year and are now based upon a weekly wage calculation with offences now also being grouped into bands with fines and points as a calculation of these.

this of course only applies if it’s over the FPN speed. None of these were apparently.

we got some custom made by the local timber man. Wasn’t anymore really than buying something from the shops. Blinking heavy, but will last for millenia

And then for something a little cheaper we got a load of this link from aldi last year (although it appears it’s back in now, so you might find some) . Normal three year guarantee.

I have a slightly faster one but I wanted a decent screen (gorilla glass and all), and i definitely wanted it to be able to do a lot (i know it’s a chromebook, and it’s all in the cloud etc). At the time at JL, the Intel M7 version was the same price as the Intel M3 one. So why not?

It’s not now; the M3 is £100 cheaper, so I probably wouldn’t think it was a premium worth paying.

One negative – as Stoner says  – is the USB-C charger. I know it’s the future (blah blah), but I’ve nothing else with it at the moment. I have bought a £5 USB-C from amazon, and it will charge from a normal wall plug, but it’s obviously a lot slower. Other than that, there’s not a lot. You can’t download into Chrome from BBC iPlayer (you can watch via streaming of course), but you can download via the iPlayer app. Bonkers really.

It is lovely aluminium. No real plastic. The kids thought it was an Macbook; it does look and feel a quality bit of kit.

Very quick to start up; so quick that I actually turn it off every night, rather than just shutting the lid. As I’ve got it set to AutoOn, by the time I’ve opened it into tablet mode it’s ready to go. And as it’s set to unlock when my phone is in range, there’s no password to enter. It’s just ready to go.

I am impressed. To the extent that when the family laptop goes (soon!), I’ll either convert that into a chromebook, or buying another Asus flip (possibly a cheaper one)

    petec

like stoner I hardly use the apps on my Asus flip; chrome does all I need. Just use it as a 12″ tab most of the time, with a built in stand

we went 21 years ago. Flew into hanoi, and didn’t see a westerner for days (until we bumped into the british ambassador’s wife). Followed everywhere as I’m slightly taller than the average local.

The road to Halong bay was still dirt.  Going south on Route 1, the minibus hit a pedestrian quite hard. We didn’t stop at all. Had a lovely time in Hoi an, ate cat, got clothes made, had to buy about 15 pineapples on the beach just to get the child hawkers away from us. In Nha Trang, some one unlocked our hotel door at 3am, and came in. Bit of a shock. Stayed in the crazy house in dalat. Remember being in awe of someone going on to Cambodia, as it still wasn’t recommended at the time.  Eating Chicken feet in Hue, and being amazed at the destructoin there. And of course Mamma Hanh’s boat trip from Nha Trang; a boat trip out to the south china sea, with all the beer/food/dope you needed. But on the condition you had to be serious coming back into harbour, or the police would get you.

Spent a month there – which at the time was the limit on the visa. Don’t know now. And of course no contact with the outside world at the time.

But it was the most amazing country., Absolutely loved it. Much nicer than Thailand. Would go back in an instant, but I’m sure it’s all changed now, and it’s a bit Saga/Titan esque.

Oh I’ve been to the Bell so many times. We often cycle up from Streatley on a Friday night, have a few too many, then cycle back down the ridgeway at whatever time they’ve kicked us out. Crashed slightly too many times.

Never tried the White Hart;  always used to go to the Pot Kiln when over that way, but now the Taproom is there, with all 15 Westberks/Renegade beers on tap, we spend too much time in there. Even the kids’ll do a 40km round trip cycle for it

excellent – cheers Cokie. Does sound slightly more exciting then strolling through the Pang Valley pointing out royal residents (and Tarrant) again

FiL should be able to cope (he’s the man who once invited me for a walk to the pub. Twenty miles later we finally got there).

i think that’s the walk sorted!

blimey cokie – that’s good. Where’s the vehicles and amo stores?

I’ve got to take the FiL for a walk on saturday; i was just going to the taproom at west berks, have a quick 30 sec pootle then a couple of pints. But the old base sounds better – he’d enjoy that

I’m often cycling up Thorn Hill or between Ashamptead and Yattendon. Just try and avoid the main road I guess.

I’ve got a Viking – they’re owned by Stihl. Mine has a mulching attachment for when i’m too lazy to put clippings in the bin. Decent plastic body, so no rust. Replaceable parts all over.

been excellent in the four years I’ve had it – no issues at all.

apparently Android tabs are on the way out. Google are moving towards 2in1 Chromebooks that run Android apps.  See here

I’ve just got one of these and it’s excellent. For some reason John Lewis are selling the M7 version for the same price as the M3 one (and about £300 cheaper than elsewhere…)

i generally ride alone. Partly as due to taking the boy to football and rugby both mornings at the weekend, or the garden needs doing, or something else

so i pop out when i can, and it’s unlikely someone else will be ready. And if I want to change my route I can, and no-one cares. It’s me time.

I’m also not the biggest fan of cafe stops; don’t see the point of wasting half an hour as I don’t generally eat cake, and it gets in the way of cycling (see above points…)

i went out for a quick 40km on quiet country lanes last night, coming back at 9ish. That was on 23mm tyres. It was -3c for the last hour. It was fine (toes were a little cold…), no ice at all. It’s been dry for a few days (here at least), so I’d do another cycle tomorrow easily.

It’s a different type of cold to normal (more continental, less damp). So give it a go.

please don’t use access – it’s the bane of any DBA’s life

What you want can be done but as mentioned, you really need to lock it down so something along the lines of

    Grant update, select on [table] to {user}

(you did only mention update, and not insert or delete)

The other thing that would be handy would be a trigger that populates another table so you can see the before and after data – just in case. If you only want a user to update their own rows, and not other people’s, it does get a little more complicated, but can be done.

Anyway – here’s a nice webpage that should explain a bit more. Or here

As it’s potentially open to a massive number of potential users, have you got Express edition? If you need a larger DB than Express allows, Mr Microsoft may not be entirely happy if you’re using Standard.

Is it a live update, or can you pull it once every night? You could do something like this, with a scheduled job
