You shouldn’t need drawings at all for this type of work. Do it under a “Building Notice”, which is basically filling out a form & paying a fee to your local authority Building Control Dept & then get the friendly local building inspector round when you want to make a start to discuss the job. He will tell you what he expects/ what he will need to see to sign off the work, keep him in the loop throughout & everyone’s happy & you’ ve saved yourself some money on unecessary drawings.

Ride the motorbike lots, eat baked beans on toast & gorge myself on pickled onions, oh & leave the bedroom window open overnight. Dig out the vinyl & turn up the volume – the missus never really liked The Groundhogs, Edgar Broughton etc. and turn the thermostat on the CH down.

Why not go for units that contain the Venetian blind in the air gap between the glass panes which are opened/closed with a magnet

I’ve seen a couple of installations through my work as a district surveyor, & whilst they can have the “wow factor” when you flick the switch, I should think that would soon wear off but, more importantly I thought the glazing, when switched off, was optically very poor & was vaguely opaque. Also v expensive.

As a student had a mind numbingly boring job wire brushing rust off steel poles at an industrial plant. We had to wear those fetching paper hooded boiler suit type things & face masks etc. To relieve the boredom one day we stuffed a suit to make it look like a person, attached gloves & boots etc & hung, with a noose, the “body” from a roof truss. Imagine the look on the foremans face when we rushed in all panicked.
My brother, when he was at agricultural college, claims he had a dump in a Marvel tin, taped the lid up & left the said item on a radiator in a fellow students room over the christmas hols………. My brother became a tree surgeon & the victim is now an evangelist

Privateering- Mark Knopfler. A real surprise ‘cos a lot of Dire Straits stuff used to bore me, but this is an absolute peach of an album, which bears repeated listening with a glass of your favourite tipple to hand. Highly recommended.

They were the 1st live band I saw, way back in 1979 in Brighton. Saw them many times after that. At the time, I was still at school & we were allowed to paint a big mural on the 6th form common room wall & I managed to convince my classmates that the “Warriors on the edge of time” album cover would look great, so that’s what we painted. I think at the time, most people were into The Jam & suchlike, so it was quite a coup. Happy days

You CANNOT get retrospective approval under building regs for something that was built pre-1985, so it IS a 1bed house. Allow £30,000 to do it properly & DON’T buy it as a 3 bed cos it’s not.

If its currently a bungalow & will become 2 storey after the loft conversion, then no need to worry about fire doors – this only applies to 3 storey dwellings. Loft conversion companies are generally quick & can usually do the planning/building regs drawings for you, but quality of finishes not always the best & can be pricey. Best to get a local builder (ideally from recommendation-ask to see a portfolio of previous work) who has done loft conversions before. Always get min 3 quotes & never go for the cheapest. A good general builder should be able hook you up with someone who can draw plans & a structural engineer, which you will need. Talk to your local authority Building control dept also, they are generally very knowledgeable & helpful.
