Back in the late 70’s we had a sports teacher who tried to maintain his youthful good looks with a long comb-over. Always during the course of his exertions this hefty flap of hair would lift & hang down one shoulder only to be stuck back on his sweaty pate. Of course, we kids noticed this & one unfortunate, during a game of basketball, made a light hearted observation which probably included the words “slap” & “head”, which resulted in him receiving a basketball thrown full force into his face, with the resultant claret everywhere etc. We kids were told to keep quiet or face the consequences.

He was also a father. RIP. This country needs more characters like him, regardless of where you nail your flag

In the area of spain that I know well, an omelette containing anything other than potatoes is known as a tortilla Francesa – a French omelette !

From Aragon, never with onions. Just 4 good eggs, 4 Maris piper potatoes, good olive oil & salt. The sliced not diced potatoes are sweated off in a big pan with the lid on & low heat, so they soften up but don’t crisp up. Break the potato slices a little as you transfer to a bowl containing the beaten eggs. Then transfer to a deep omelette pan on a low heat for about 5 mins. Put a large plate over the pan to turn the omelette over & slide it back ( carefully) into the pan for the remaining 5 mins max. I cook one every Friday night. Can be eaten hot or cold, always with good fresh bread. Yum.

I managed to see Queen in 1979 in a little club in Purley, sarf London of all places. They basically played Live Killers plus a bit of new stuff. Amazing. Nowadays I’d queue to see Richard Thompson doing his acoustic set.

Our cat won’t wear a collar either. She’s chipped. I was very reluctant to let her go explore cos she’s a beautiful British Blue, & was worried she might ” go missing” , but cats need to explore. She’s now a lot happier she can come & go as she pleases. Give it lots of love & it’ll come back.

For me Cormack McCarthy’s writing is utterly compelling. At first very hard to get into with unusual dialogue, but once you catch the rhythm his work is totally absorbing & I’ve never been so moved by any other author. You usually need to read something light after, though…

If you like Roquefort, Cabrales from Spain’s picos de Europa is fantastic. From these shores, Montgomery cheddar.

I’m not sure that there is a mandatory requirement to re-line the flue, however, how do you prove that the existing flue is adequate for it’s proposed use? I don’t see many gas fitters prepared to take the risk with an existing flue & will (mostly) always insist on relining the flue to ensure it’s fit for purpose. A**se covering to a certain extent but would you take the risk? CO is a silent invisible killer. (Takes off hi-vis & leaves room)….

Btw you really shouldn’t be draining rainwater into your septic tank ( if I have understood your post correctly), as it dilutes the friendly bacteria that breaks down the nasties & you end up with a pollution problem

1 in 80 is the normal fall for a flat roof – not sure about the requirements for a glass one. You might want to speak to this lot:
http://www.ggf.org.uk/ Glass & Glazing Federation, for advice. Not sure what remedy you will have against the “architect”. As previous post queried, is he/she RIBA?

Vaillant Ecotec & unvented hot water cylinder – having chatted to many plumbers over the years, the consensus opinion was Vaillant for reliability. I took the plunge last year & have been very happy so far.

Might be worth writing to local building control, explaining that you plan to refurb an existing 3rd floor room & request in writing that they would view as refurb & not conversion- should cover you for future eventualities

Solicitors are only interested in covering their a***s & do not have their clients best interests at heart IMHO

If it has always been a habitable room since original build then it is not a ‘conversion’ & therefore no regs requirements are applicable. Did you purchase the property with the loft room described as a bedroom? Upgrade of insulation will only kick in as a regs requirement if you are re- roofing or removing old plasterboard.

Had the great fortune to chance upon WJ playing with The Blockheads at a small ” local” at the annual festival in a town in northern Spain 3 or 4 years ago. The energy coming off the stage was amazing for a bunch of oldies & they were one of the tightest bands I’ ve ever seen. WJ is a true one off. Deep respect.

Building inspector – started out as draughtsman for consulting engineers but got fed up drawing straight lines. 3 years full time at tech college + further 4 years day release to get professionally qualified. Enjoy the variety the job brings & the fact that I’m out & about meeting all sorts, but it can be pretty confrontational sometimes. Always think I would like to do something completely different but I’m probably too old for that now.

Insulated p/board as its a single fix operation – in either case the thickness required will depend on the u value you need to achieve. Don’ t just go for the thinnest product as it may not be enough – check with building control before you buy.

In England, the most BC might ask for when doing this kind of work is a basic specification. This link should help :

    http://www.celotex.co.uk/applications/refurbishment/garage-conversions

but in any case, just give the building inspector a call
